Drivers disobeying "No Parking" and cone zones on Echo Summit

Hundreds of vehicles disobey parking rules along Echo Summit and Highway 50 each winter as they try to find a place to park so people can stop and play in the snow. Their parking on a highway is dangerous, and the California Highway Patrol is trying deter parking to encourage them to park where legal.

Earlier in 2017, CHP and California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) teamed up to correct the bad behavior of weekend drivers as they attempted to line both sides of Highway 50.

A popular spot for drivers to pull out is at the Old Meyer's Grade, one that has cones up to prevent parking. CHP Officer Heitzman had to replace traffic cones Saturday after they were moved by motorists who parking on the shoulder of highway 50.

Not only did Officer Heitzman have to replace the cones, she also had to gather up dozens of red broken sleds and garbage left behind, a problem around the basin at sledding hills. Winter enthusiasts need to be reminded that "No Trace Left Behind" pertains to them as well.
