Douglas County confirms positive COVID-19 exposure at election polls

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - County officials say the election process will not be affected after learning on Sunday, November 1 that a Douglas County employee involved in the election tested positive for COVID-19.

Douglas County has worked closely with Carson City Health and Human Services on contact tracing related to the positive case. Individuals who are considered close contacts to the positive case have already been notified regarding their need to isolate or quarantine.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - El Dorado County health officials say another 41 residents have tested positive for COVID-19 since Friday. Of those, eight are in El Dorado Hills, seven in Greater Placerville, two in North County, one in Pollock Pines/Camino/ Kyburz, two in Diamond Springs/El Dorado, nine in Cameron Park/Shingle Springs/Rescue, and 12 in the Lake Tahoe region.

One of those new cases, five are under the age of 18, 21 are aged 18-49, nine are aged 50-64, and six 65 or older.

Another 842 people were tested for the coronavirus and 801 negative tests results were received.

Drowsy Driving Prevention Week

As daylight saving time comes to an end on Sunday, November 1, any will notice the time change disrupting sleep patterns and affecting the ability to concentrate and safely operate a motor vehicle. To highlight the life-threatening dangers of fatigued driving, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) joins the Office of Traffic Safety (OTS), the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), and the National Sleep Foundation in recognizing Drowsy Driving Prevention Week, November 1-8, 2020, and encouraging Californians to stay alert and stay alive.

Time to Fall Back as daylight saving time comes to an end for 2020

Daylight-saving time comes to an end for 2020 on Sunday, November 1 at 2:00 a.m. in much of the United States. Clocks will move back one hour as standard time starts its run.

The practice of having the time change started in the early 1900s as a way to make better use of daylight during the spring and summer months, so there is an extra hour of sunlight in the evening instead of the morning.

CHP to have drive-through trick-or-treating at their Meyers office

Officers from the CHP South Lake Tahoe office are hosting a drive-through trick-or-treating event on October 31 from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - El Dorado County health officials say another eight residents have tested positive for COVID-19 since yesterday. Of those, two are in El Dorado Hills, three in Greater Placerville, two in Cameron Park/Shingle Springs/Rescue, and one in the Lake Tahoe region.

One of those new cases, six are aged 18-49, one are aged 50-64, and one 65 or older.

Another 178 people were tested for the coronavirus and 170 negative tests results were received.

There have been another seven assumed recoveries with 121 assumed active cases.

New date for workshop on future plans for 56-acre project in South Lake Tahoe

That’s right a price bump of about 30 percent for the Touring model.

Rotary International's World Polio Day is being celebrated around the world this weekend, a time set aside for global health experts and partners to share the service club's progress on the road to polio eradication.

It has been over 60 years since the Jonas Salk polio vaccine was declared safe, effective, and potent. In that time, the number of polio cases has dropped by 99 percent worldwide. With just three countries remaining polio-endemic, eradicating this crippling disease is almost complete. There is no cure, and only the vaccine to prevent it.

South Lake Tahoe Hosted Rental Ordinance back to staff for revisions

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - City Council made another attempt to create a Hosted Rental Ordinance but they decided at their meeting Tuesday to hand back to staff for some revisions.

After much discussion they decided to have staff clean up rules that could be potential loopholes for homeowners and/or tenants. This is the second time a first reading has been turned down for more fine tuning.

The following changes were added for Council to review October 20:

(1) Increase the required tenancy for a tenant to qualify as a hosted rental applicant from six months to two years;

CHP to focus on reducing teen distracted driving

Nearly six teen drivers are involved in a fatal car crash every day in the United
States. Inexperience combined with driver distraction increases the risk for error, making motor vehicle crashes the leading cause of death for young drivers in the nation. To reduce teen distracted driving, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) has partnered with Impact Teen Drivers (ITD) to teach positive habits and behaviors to our most vulnerable drivers through education and enforcement.

Column: What constitutes domestic violence?

Domestic violence, as known as intimate partner violence, is an issue that touches every community. There were 265 reports of domestic violence in South Lake Tahoe, including domestic disturbance, domestic battery, and domestic assault from January 1, 2019, until October 9, 2020. There are many forms of abuse, besides physical assault, that constitute domestic violence.

The questions focused mainly on topics relating to things that will or may affect both the local small businesses and the community in general.

Their board made the decision to not endorse a specific candidate this election, but instead rank them based on how much they align with the South Tahoe Chamber of Commerce goals based on their answers to the questions below.

Overland Meat & Seafood pays it forward once again - Tacos for Tahoe giveaway

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Seven hundred people will be the recipients of the next Overland Meat & Seafood "Tacos for Tahoe" giveaway on Monday, October 26 starting at 10:00 a.m.

Brian Cohen, owner of the popular market in South Lake Tahoe, will be continuing what they did three different times at the beginning of the pandemic. At the first ground beef giveaway Cohen went through all 1,000 pounds of meat in 90 minutes.

This time he giving away 1,400 pounds.

"Many people are still struggling in our town," he said. "We are here to help out the community."

Strong early voter turnout in El Dorado County

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - Of the 133,251 registered voters in El Dorado County, 30,886, or 23 percent, have already turned in their ballots. The elections department does not have data from the 2016 election at the same point in time. That election had 97,024 or 83.31 percent of the 116,459 registered that year, turn in ballots by election day.

As of October 15:

Of those ballots, 28,996 have had signatures verified against reference signature and the balance of 1,890 are awaiting verification.

Chance of smoke from Creek Fire back in Lake Tahoe Basin Friday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Smoke from the 40-day old Creek Fire is expected to reach the Lake Tahoe Basin Friday with the forecast west winds. The first wave of smoke is expected by dawn Friday and could last until evening. Much of the region could experience widespread haze.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a month dedicated to coming together in solidarity with victims and survivors by speaking out on relationship violence to provide education and empowerment.

Domestic violence, and other intimate partner violence, is a pattern of abusive behavior to keep power and control over a partner’s personal life. Abusive partners can use intimidation, threats, force, manipulation or coercion to establish and maintain this control over their partner. 

Public meeting for El Dorado County Ad Hoc Hemp Committee

El Dorado County and South Lake Tahoe remain in state's orange reopening tier

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - During Tuesday's El Dorado County Board of Supervisors meeting, the county's Public health Officer Dr. Nancy Williams said the region remains in the orange tier of the California reopening plan.

During the meeting, Dr. Williams told the supervisors it is now obvious that California is in the midst of a second wave of coronavirus cases, and El Dorado County is experiencing a second wave as well, but so far the numbers have kept the region in the "orange."
