The Lake Tahoe Unified School Board of Trustees will be holding a meeting on Tuesday, June 22, 2015 at 6:00 p.m.

In 1981, Dr. Gregory Bergner opened Tahoe Family Physicians along with Dr. Brooks Martin and Dr. Paul Rork. The popular physicians delivered hundreds of South Lake Tahoe babies and kept many in the community healthy in a family friendly atmosphere.

Bergner is set to retire on April 14 after 34 years of helping the South Shore, not only as a doctor but as someone who actively sponsored, volunteered, and participated in many local organizations.

A historic donation was made to the Lake Tahoe Community College today, enabling the school to build the Robert Maloff University Center on campus in preparation for offering four year degrees. LTCC has applied to be part of a state pilot program that will bring in baccalaureate degrees to 15 community colleges, beginning with at least one program at each school.

My name is Dr. Frederick “Fritz” Wenck, DDS, and I’ve been closely involved with Lake Tahoe Community College since its beginning in 1974, when I was elected one of the first LTCC Board of Trustees members. I’d like you to consider, just for a minute, what would happen if the college’s Measure F bond effort failed to pass this Election Day.

The Board of Trustees, students, faculty and staff of Lake Tahoe Community College recognize the serious health problems associated with smoking tobacco and other non-tobacco products and the use of smokeless tobacco. The college also recognizes that tobacco smoke poses a health risk to non-smokers. In order to protect students and staff who choose not to smoke from an unhealthy environment, the LTCC Board of Trustees approved a new policy that prohibits smoking within buildings or facilities owned or leased by the District, and designates marked outside areas on campus for smoking.

Energy saving improvements at the Lake Tahoe Community College will soon pay off financially when Liberty Utilities presents a check for $17.085.85 to the LTCC board of directors on September 9.

The check represents all of the rebates the college was eligible for after the improvements were used on campus starting in 2013.

There are three seats up for grabs in the November election for the Lake Tahoe Community College Board of Trustees. Trustees from areas 1, 2 and 5 are up for re-election.

Area 1 is currently represented by Kerry David, who has announced his intention to seek re-election. Area 2 is currently represented by longtime Board member Roberta Mason, who is retiring from her seat after 40 years of service to the college. Area 5 is currently represented by Molly Blann, who announced in June that she is not seeking re-election.

This year, Lake Tahoe Community College is marking 40 years of providing excellence in education to the Tahoe Basin. As the college prepares to celebrate its 40th anniversary with a gala this weekend, we wanted to take a moment to express our deepest thanks to our community—for its support, energy, time, donations and commitment to helping us provide access to quality college education for all members of our community.

The Lake Tahoe Community College District was voted into existence 40 years ago, on March 5, 1974. The College has big plans to celebrate its anniversary with a number of fun and educational events this year. Members of the media, the community, and college staff and faculty are all welcome to attend a press conference on Wednesday, March 5th at 11 a.m. to hear the College’s plans to mark its 40th year, and to honor its history. The conference will be held at the Econo Lodge at 2659 Lake Tahoe Boulevard, where the College first offered classes and welcomed its first students.

Benjamin Wade and Christian DeLeon were hired as the new LTCC soccer coaches at Tuesday night's Lake Tahoe Community College Board meeting. Both coaches will head up the newly established intercollegiate soccer program at the college. Wade will be the men's head coach and DeLeon the women's.

Lake Tahoe Community College faculty, staff, Board of Trustees, and administration express their heartfelt condolences to the family of LTCC distinguished alumnus Carl Young. Carl and his former “Storm Chaser” colleagues star Tim Samaras and his son Paul Samaras were killed on Friday, May 31 while chasing storms in Oklahoma.

Nearly 50 years ago, on Nov. 23 1963, Barton Memorial Hospital opened its doors in South Lake Tahoe and on Thursday, Jan. 24, Barton Memorial Hospital held an “official” ribbon cutting ceremony to commemorate 50 years of service to the community. The event included a speech by the great-grandchild of Bill Barton, the namesake of the hospital and current member of Barton Health’s Board of Directors, Kirk Ledbetter.

Lake Tahoe Community College’s Board of Trustees announced Tuesday that Jeff DeFranco, the current director of communications and facilities at Springfield Public Schools in Oregon, will be the college’s next vice president of administrative services.

DeFranco holds a master’s in educational leadership with an emphasis in higher education administration from the University of Oregon. He earned his undergraduate degree from California State University, Chico.
