Lake Tahoe Community College Says "Thank You" to the Community for 40 Great Years

This year, Lake Tahoe Community College is marking 40 years of providing excellence in education to the Tahoe Basin. As the college prepares to celebrate its 40th anniversary with a gala this weekend, we wanted to take a moment to express our deepest thanks to our community—for its support, energy, time, donations and commitment to helping us provide access to quality college education for all members of our community.

Lake Tahoe Community College simply would not exist if it weren’t for the efforts of many people who fought for an affordable, accessible, quality college in our town. The effort started with high school parents who wanted their kids to be able to earn a college degree right here at home. The idea caught on and spread, with help from interested business owners, teachers, homeowners and community members who were willing to roll up their sleeves and ensure that the vision for a college would be seen through. Their tenacious attitudes and dedication to this cause led to the formation of the LTCC college district by election on March 5, 1974.

The college had humble beginnings, first educating students in the fall of 1975 out of a converted motel on Highway 50. While it wasn’t a traditional college setting with ivy covered walls, the school’s founders, faculty, staff and students made it work. The college grew, and eventually settled into its current 164-acre campus on Al Tahoe Blvd. While the last few years at the college have been difficult ones, we’ve made it through—with tenacity and the continuing support of the community we strive to serve each and every day.

Whether interested in a college degree, a career, or in lifelong learning, our community has found LTCC to be a place where the pursuit of knowledge can happen at any stage of life, with help from dedicated faculty, staff, administrators and board members. We hope you’ll continue to use our campus to pursue your academic goals. Or, please come and explore it for the first time and let us show you what your local community college has to offer. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, Superintendent/President, and everyone at LTCC, thank you for making this college possible, and for continuing to lend your support to it.
