Due to increased Ferguson Fire activity in the areas adjacent to and on Yosemite National Park, park administrators and fire managers have made the decision to extend the current park closures indefinitely.

"The fire activity inside Yosemite National Park is dynamic," said park officials in a press release. "Over the past 48 hours, fire has impacted all of the roads used to access Yosemite Valley, burning dead and downed trees that can become very explosive and fall without warning."

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Eight graduating students from across the South Shore and Carson Valley were awarded a combined $16,000 in scholarships from the Barton Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. The annual scholarship program was open to local high school and community college students focusing their higher education in a medical field of study.

Twenty-six team members from Lake Tahoe Unified School District are retiring this year after serving a collective 627.5 years in the local schools.

During a reception hosted by the Lake Tahoe Educational Foundation, each retiree was honored with a gift and plant and a round of applause.

Its been 19 days since Ron Svetlik was seriously burned after an engine he was working on in his shop exploded and caught on fire. The 57-year-old South Lake Tahoe man has been in the U.C.

STATELINE, Nev. - A man was severely burned Wednesday afternoon as he worked on a vehicle in a leased space on the bottom floor of the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) building off of Kingsbury Grade.

There was an initial explosion which caused the fire. The unidentified man suffered serious burns to his head, face and arms. He was flown to the UC Davis Burn Center.

The cause is still under investigation for the afternoon incident, but fire officials do know that the man was working on a fueled vehicle. He was able to get out of the building on his own.

In the 18 years that Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care have been caring for bear cubs, 96 have passed through their doors. Most of those 96 have wintered at the facility on Cherry Hills Circle, and today, Layton, left his temporary home in South Lake Tahoe and went back Laytonville, Calif., the area he was found in.

Late in the evening on June 23, 2017, Layton arrived at Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care after being found alone, full of mites, foxtails, ticks and underweight. He weighed in at 15 pounds and was about four or five months old.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - While many students across the country hit the streets on National Student Walkout Day, Mt. Tallac students were in the classroom focusing how they can be the future change makers.

Students America Rojas, 17, and Kai Heiden, 17, created a slide show for their classmates and staff. There were 19 slides, representing the 17 students who lost their lives one month ago in Parkland, Florida, along with the copy of a poem written by one of the victims (seen at the end of this story).

The man injured in January 14th's honey oil lab explosion in Gardnerville has been identified.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said 22-year-old Adam Fitzgerald-Wermes suffered third-degree burns after an explosion stemming from an illicit Butane Hash Oil (BHO) extraction process.

At 2:40 p.m., emergency personnel responded to a call of fire at the Crestmore Apartments. Upon arrival they located an extinguished appliance fire and an injured male with third degree burns.

A man was burned Sunday during an illicit Butane Hash Oil (BHO) extraction process in an apartment in Gardnerville, Nevada.

At 2:40 p.m. January 14, Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and East Fork Fire Protection District responded to a structure fire at the Stodick Apartments. When emergency personnel arrived they located an extinguished appliance fire and an injured male from the fire with third degree burns. The burn victim was transported by air ambulance to Renown Medical Center in Reno.

On adult male and one juvenile were hospitalized after an explosion at a Camino, California home on January 1, 2018.

Initially, El Dorado County Fire responded to the 3:25 p.m. call of an explosion in a home in the 5100 block of Pony Express Trail. They then asked for El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office to respond to the scene for a possible butane extraction lab explosion.

Joshua Jamison, 39, was at the home when the explosion occurred and suffered burns to his face. He was transported to a local hospital where he was treated and released.

A man who was visiting Lake Tahoe is now in the U.C. Davis Burn Center after falling asleep in front of a fireplace and catching on fire.

Just after midnight on December 5, Tahoe Douglas Fire crews responded to the Ridge Tahoe on a call of a man burned in a fire in one of their rooms. The unidentified man fell asleep in front of a gas fireplace. He awoke to find himself on fire and called for help. Firemen extinguished the fire and the man was transported via Cal Star to the burn center. He was reported to have severe burns to just under 50 percent of his body.

After taking a break during the Thanksgiving holiday, the Tahoe Fire and Fuels Team (TFFT) resume prescribed fire operations next week, beginning Monday, November 27, 2017, weather permitting.

North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District, California State Parks and the California Tahoe Conservancy will conduct prescribed fire operations above Incline Village, D.L. Bliss and Burton Creek state parks and near the airport in South Lake Tahoe. Smoke may be visible.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – California State Parks will kick off the Tahoe Fire and Fuels Team (TFFT) fall prescribed fire program next week beginning Wednesday, November 1, 2017. If conditions are favorable, prescribed fire operations will take place in D.L. Bliss State Park on the southwest end of Lake Tahoe. This operation was originally scheduled for earlier this month, but was delayed due to resource needs elsewhere.

65 acres of understory in the area will be burned and it is expected to take one week to complete the job.

California State Parks will kick off the Tahoe Fire and Fuels Team (TFFT) fall prescribed fire program next week, beginning October 10, 2017. If conditions are favorable, prescribed fire operations will take place in D.L. Bliss State Park on the southwest end of Lake Tahoe. Smoke may be visible and is expected to last through the week. 7:00PM UPDATE 10/4 - The Cutter Fire burning in the Pine Nut Mountains of Douglas County has now burned through 1,697 acres of brush. A chainsaw started the fire which started on October 3 at 12:19 p.m. Several firefighters are on the scene according to Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center.

The Cutter Fire in Douglas County has burned 650 acres since starting just after noon Tuesday, according to Sierra Front. The brush fire is burning in the area of U.S. 395 in the Pine Nut Mountains near Leviathan Mine Road in Douglas County.

9:30 p.m. update: According to the Nevada Highway Patrol, the RV had mechanical failure, its brakes failed on the downhill lake side of Kingsbury Grade. The vehicle then crashed and caught fire. Both the driver and passenger were taken to Barton Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

8:00 p.m. update: Kingsbury Grade is open. There are no other details available at this time other than the motorhome is a total loss after fire consumed it. Flames moved into nearby grass but was quickly extinguished.

Condition of the driver and their passenger is unknown at this time.

The Lyons Fire burning 15 miles east of Carson City has now consumed 1,128 acres since lightning started it Tuesday afternoon.

68 firefighters are on the scene of the fire which is on the east side of the Pine Nut Mountain Range.

There is no containment at this time.

Update on other area fires:

The Voltaire Fire behind Fandango in Carson City is now fully contained, but not after burning 135 acres and causes some evacuations. That fire was also started by lightning on Tuesday afternoon.

8:45 p.m. update: Firefighters on the Preacher Fire have gained ground on the fire and have been able to get it 20 percent contained. It was actively burning all day with single tree torching, creeping, and wind-driven runs. The total burned remains at 4,651 acres.

4:45 p.m. update: Acreage burned in the Preacher Fire is a lot less than previously reported due to a glitch in mapping. The fire, which started Monday with a lightning strike, has burned 4,651 acres.

7:45 p.m. update: There is less smoke in the Lake Tahoe basin this evening but air quality is still measuring in the "Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups" range. The Detwiler Fire is burning in drought stricken chaparral and in an area of severe tree mortality and has consumed 70,596 acres and is now 10 percent contained.

As of tonight, 50 residences and 49 other structures have been destroyed and widespread evacuation orders are still in place.

Widespread haze over Lake Tahoe, Reno and Carson City areas is forecast again for Friday.
