A free nutrition education series for parents is being offered by the
University of California Cal Fresh Nutrition Education. The topic "Food Labels" is for parents and will be held at Sierra House Elementary School at 1709 Remington Trail in South Lake Tahoe at 6 pm on January 7.

The program is free for all CalFresh recipients and parents of local elementary school children.

When many teenaged girls are planning what to wear or where to hang out on a Saturday night, 15 year old Mykala Muskovitz of South Lake Tahoe is training for the Tour de Tahoe bike ride around Lake Tahoe on September 8. And she isn’t just going to ride, she is going to fundraise with every turn of the pedal.

Jazzercise takes to the outdoors for a free two day exercise event at the Harvey's Arena on Monday, August 12 and Wednesday, August 14. Eight local instructions will showcase some of the hottest routines and highlight music from Pit Bull, Jennifer Lopez, Macklemore, Michael Franti and lots more.

Everyone is invited to this family friendly event which will be a forty minute aerobic worked followed by 20 minutes of strength training.
Participants are encouraged to bring their own weights or tubes if they have them. The event starts at 6:30 pm on both evenings.

New classes will begin at the Center for Spiritual Development in South Lake Tahoe. The classes are taught by Marty and Amrito Cross.

Lake Tahoe Community College has started a brand-new scholarship in honor of a former instructor who passed away in late May. The Carl Young Memorial Earth Science Scholarship is being established to honor the meteorology teacher, who died when he and two colleagues were chasing tornadoes just outside Oklahoma City.

This new Earth Science scholarship will be the first of its kind at LTCC according to geology and earth science instructor Scott Valentine, who worked with Mr. Young’s parents to establish the scholarship.

Lake Tahoe Community College’s 38th Annual Commencement Ceremony is Friday, June 28 at 6 p.m. in the LTCC Gymnasium.

The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office has announced classes for its 2013 Citizen's Academy. Residents of the county can learn about the law enforcement agency and its many functions, said Sheriff John D’Agostini.

Classes run one night each week, (typically Tuesdays) from 6 to 9 p.m.. The next academy is scheduled to begin March 19 and will end June 25, 2013 The academy classes are held at the Sheriff’s Placerville OES training facility. The Citizen’s Academy is offered on a first come first served basis to El Dorado County residence and is free of charge.

The City of South Lake Tahoe’s Public Works Snow Removal Operation visited Sierra House Elementary Schools kindergarten and first grade classes to promote snow safety today. Street Supervisor Azril Kalik shared important safety reminders to Ms. Wilson and Ms. Tabor’s first graders.

“When you see the snow removal machines in your neighborhood, it’s important to go inside and play to remain safe. Remember to keep toys, sleds, shovels and your pets out of the road so they do not get damaged,” said Kalik.

The Lake Tahoe Museum has spent the month of October hosting numerous 3rd grade classes, sharing with them our local history in an educational and exciting way. As part of their curriculum, 3rd graders are required to learn about the development of their community and how it has changed over time.

Training for a Lake Tahoe Master Gardener program will begin this September in South Lake Tahoe.
The program is a partnership between the University of California Cooperative Extension Central Sierra and the Tahoe Resource Conservation District.
Participants who complete the 50-hour training course will be certified Lake Tahoe Master Gardeners who then can provide the community with research-based information about home horticulture and gardening.

Learn how to garden and landscape sustainably in our Tahoe watershed in this FREE workshop series! These weekly, interactive classes with Tahoe-area experts are your chance to plant veggies, compost, manage invasive weeds, irrigate efficiently, raise chicken...and more, like a pro, all while helping to keep our Lake blue and clean.

Class sizes have increased, courses have been cut and tuition has been raised — repeatedly. Fewer colleges are offering summer classes. Administrators rely increasingly on higher tuition from out-of-staters. And there are signs it could get worse: If a tax increase proposed by California Gov. Jerry Brown is not approved this year, officials say they will be forced to consider draconian cuts like eliminating entire schools or programs.

In one of the most innovate private-public education partnerships developed in recent years, Lake Tahoe Community College prepares to launch the summer follow-up of its successful CONNECT program.

Designed as a way for community members to extend their education pursuits, CONNECT offers noncredit classes at Lake Tahoe Community College with a series of life enhancement workshops for people with passions for arts, theater, health and fitness and business marketing.


The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency is encouraging local residents and part-time homeowners to become “wildfire aware” by taking advantage of public education activities during Lake Tahoe Wildfire Awareness Week happening May 26 to June 3.

“With the fifth anniversary of the Angora fire coming up, this is a good opportunity for our community to discuss the importance of wildfire awareness,” said Joanne Marchetta, Executive Director of TRPA.
