Two new programs approved to help South Lake Tahoe small businesses
Submitted by paula on Tue, 01/05/2021 - 8:01pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Lake Tahoe City Council approved two programs during their meeting on Tuesday, both to help small businesses in the city limits as well as helping locals spending money locally.
The approved $75,000 to be used for the purchase of bonus gift cards with the Tahoe Chamber. While a person purchases gift cards for use at local businesses they get a bonus gift card paid through the City's funding.
Bank of the West temporarily closed due to staffing shortage
Submitted by paula on Mon, 12/21/2020 - 2:37pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Bank of the West's South Lake Tahoe branch has had to close temporarily due to a staffing shortage. A representative at the bank's branch in Carson City said it is a COVID-related closure and some staff has been in quarantine as they await test results. This has been a problem at many area banks since the pandemic started.
Once staff can be assembled to reopen safely, expect the doors to the branch at 2161 Lake Tahoe Boulevard to open once again.

No new restrictions for Nevada as Governor asks all to stem the tide of COVID-19

He said the restrictions that went into effect three weeks ago will continue until January 15, 2021. Due to the rising COVID-19 cases and deaths in the state many thought he might impose stricter regulations.

Virtual ribbon-cutting for U.S. Highway 50 Echo Summit Sidehill Viaduct Replacement Project

Because in-person events have been suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the department chose this virtual ribbon-cutting event to acknowledge the efforts of its staff, contractor Q&D Construction and the collaboration with local partner agencies in making this challenging project a successful one.

This Holiday Season many members of our community are struggling with basic necessities to survive. So many members of our community work in the service industry in jobs such as; servers, waiters, bussers, housekeepers, maintenance personnel etc. Those industries have been impacted dramatically, especially with the updated governmental restrictions on in-door dining in California.
El Dorado County reactivates its Emergency Operations Center

County’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC) in response to the increase in COVID-19 cases and its impact on County hospitals. It includes personnel from the Sheriff’s Office, County Public Health department and the County’s Chief Administrative Office.
South Lake Tahoe and El Dorado County not under shut down orders, yet
Submitted by paula on Thu, 12/03/2020 - 5:53pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - With a surge of COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations, California Governor Newsom today issued a new regional stay-at-home order as an "emergency brake" to slow the spread of COVID-19 in the state.
This order goes into effect in regions with less than 15 percent ICU availability. At this time, the El Dorado County does not fall into that group but it could be a matter of days until it does. The county is part of the Greater Sacramento Region which is at 22 percent capacity as of Thursday.

Road closure near Camino for next several months

A section of westbound Carson Road will be closed for several months due to bridge work as part of the U.S. Highway 50 Camino Safety Project.

Submitted by paula on Wed, 11/18/2020 - 7:04pmUPDATE 8:30PM: The Mono County Sheriff’s Office reports it has lifted the evacuation order for residents on the westside of U.S. Hwy 395 N. The evacuation order for east of U.S. Hwy 395 N from Eastside Lane to Cunningham Lane remains in effect. Approximately 400 residents are affected by evacuation orders. The order will be reassessed in 24 hours.
Fire behavior today exhibited minimal smoldering and creeping. No additional fire growth is anticipated. T

Lake Tahoe Unified School District moves back to all distance learning
Submitted by paula on Wed, 11/18/2020 - 4:23pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Due to the continued dramatic rise of COVID-19 cases in the community, Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) has moved all schools and programs to distance learning starting Thursday, November 19.
A significant number of staff members currently have COVID-19 or have been in direct contact with a confirmed positive individual.

Submitted by paula on Wed, 11/11/2020 - 8:46amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The US Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) has lifted its closure order at Taylor Creek so people are once again allowed into the area around the creek. This is a popular area each fall due to the Kokanee Salmon run and heightened wildlife sightings and was closed to both protect bears and discourage large gatherings. The Visitor Center has seasonally closed.

Lanes currently closed due to fatal collision on US 50 near Zephyr Cove
Submitted by paula on Tue, 11/03/2020 - 7:06pm7:40 p.m. Update: Two vehicles were involved at US-50 and Douglas Mile Marker 3, east of Stateline on Tuesday evening. There is one confirmed deceased according to the Nevada Highway Patrol. They said impairment is suspected.
The highway is still shut down in both directions for the investigation. Avoid the area and expect the closure to last several hours.
DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - US Highway 50 near Zephyr Cove is closed in both directions this evening due to a fatal collusion at 6:25 p.m. The Nevada Highway Patrol is telling drivers to take an alternate route as of 7:05 p.m.
Lane closure in South Lake Tahoe for pilot project as Caltrans paints bike lane green
Submitted by paula on Tue, 11/03/2020 - 6:36pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Caltrans is advising motorists of a lane closure on U.S. Highway 50 in South Lake Tahoe later this week for a pilot project to paint a section of the bike lane green.
The closure is scheduled for the eastbound #2 lane from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Thursday between Dunlap Drive and 3rd Street to apply the paint treatment.
Taylor Creek closure extended by USFS
Submitted by paula on Mon, 11/02/2020 - 2:13pmDue to continued public health and safety concerns, trail construction, risk of bear-human encounters and in order to discourage large groups from gathering, the USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit has extended a Forest Order that temporarily closes Taylor Creek and the surrounding area. This order (see here) is extended through November 9 at this time.

They are currently working to start their final full culvert crossing replacement. During this work period, through access on Centerville Lane will be lost at the culvert location shown on the map above.

The questions focused mainly on topics relating to things that will or may affect both the local small businesses and the community in general.
Their board made the decision to not endorse a specific candidate this election, but instead rank them based on how much they align with the South Tahoe Chamber of Commerce goals based on their answers to the questions below.

USFS closes Taylor Creek for one month due to crowd and safety concerns
Submitted by paula on Thu, 10/01/2020 - 1:00pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The numbers of people who normally visit Taylor Creek for the fall spawning of the Kokanee salmon has prompted forest officials to close the popular area October 2 - November 2, 2020.
Due to continued public health safety concerns related to COVID-19, trail improvement work, the risk of bear-human encounters and in order to discourage large groups from gathering, the area is closed.
South Lake Tahoe City Council candidate leaves the race

Last week, Luca Genasci made an announcement on social media that he would be discontinuing his campaign. Citing a growing workload with a new business opening, Genasci said did not have "ample time" to dedicate to his new fiancé, family, friends, businesses and local politics.
Genasci owns Lake Tahoe Aleworx with two locations at Stateline and the Y, and a new bar, the Cocktail Corner, next door to the Y location in The Crossing at Tahoe Valley.
US50 over Echo Summit opens five days early
Submitted by paula on Sun, 09/27/2020 - 8:36amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - U.S. Highway 50 is back open to traffic over Echo Summit five days ahead of schedule, Caltrans announced today.
A full closure of Highway 50 over the summit was implemented Friday, Sept. 18 to install seven precast, prestressed 96-foot bridge girders and associated work that included pouring ultra high-performance concrete to connect the girders, building concrete barrier walls and approach slabs, applying a polyester overlay on the bridge, and asphalt paving approaching both sides of the new structure.
Type 3 fire team takes control of 1,667 acre Fork Fire
Submitted by paula on Thu, 09/24/2020 - 10:10amControl of the Fork Fire transferred to a local Type 3 team today. The fire was remapped and is 1,667 acres and is 70 percent contained and is located north of Pollock Pines and west of Lake Tahoe, burning in the Crystal Basin/Gerle Creek area. Strategy on the fire will remain the same with emphasis on clearing contingency lines distant from the main edge of the fire in case the fire begins to move.
Forest and fire managers would like people to be aware that while the fire closures are being reduced, there is still fire activity in the area.

US50 over Echo Summit closes early Friday for bridge replacement
Submitted by paula on Thu, 09/17/2020 - 12:08pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The planned two-week closure of U.S. Highway 50 along a 1.2 mile stretch of Echo Summit will begin Friday, September 18 at 3:00 a.m. One-lane controlled traffic has been happening all week, and now both lanes will be closed as crews replace the 1939 bridge with brand new girders to meet seismic and safety standards.
Fork Fire 1753 acres, 34% contained; Slink Fire 26,752 acres and 71% contained
Submitted by paula on Wed, 09/16/2020 - 5:54pmThe Fork Fire west of Lake Tahoe remains at 1,752 acres and is now 34 percent contained. Low pressure off the coast will advance toward the region, bringing an increase in afternoon southwest winds across ridge tops and aligned drainages. Dry conditions will persist with slight cooling.
The front will pass over the area on Friday, driving gusty southwest and west winds with cooler temperatures and higher humidity. Little to no precipitation is expected.

This decision will be re-evaluated as conditions change.
Fork Fire remains at 1,752 acres and 7% contained
Submitted by paula on Mon, 09/14/2020 - 7:06pmEL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - The forest closure order for the national forests has been extended and did not expire Monday as some had hoped. Eldorado National Forest Supervisor Jeff Marsolais said fire concerns remain, especially near the Fork Fire.
At this time, the Fork Fire has burned 1,752 acres and remains at a seven percent containment line. At this time, 300 personnel are assigned to the incident.

Fork Fire re-mapped at 1,647 acres and continues to be 7% contained
Submitted by paula on Fri, 09/11/2020 - 7:18pmThe Fork Fire continues to burn west of Lake Tahoe in the Rubicon drainage area near Loon Lake. The size has been remapped and 1,647 acres have burned and it is seven percent contained.
The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office has downgraded the mandatory evacuation order to an evacuation warning for the areas of Quintette, Stumpy Meadows and Volcanoville. This does not supersede the temporary closure order that prohibits entering or using National Forest System lands, roads and trails on the Eldorado National Forest.
Chris Sneed: The man behind the 9-11 flag flying over US50
Submitted by paula on Fri, 09/11/2020 - 2:49pmThose of us who were alive remember where they were and what they were doing when they saw or heard of the first planes fly into the towers in New York City on September 11, 2001.
Chris Sneed was working in Incline Village on a pipe replacement project for Granite Construction on Lakeshore Boulevard on 9-11-01. He needed a part and ran into Spitsen Lumber. He was in line and saw the store's 12" television showing a plane hit the first tower, and then the second tower.
Alpine County News: No outdoor fires on private land, COVID testing change
Submitted by paula on Thu, 09/10/2020 - 3:03pmALPINE COUNTY, Calif. - Effective immediately, Alpine County health officer Dr. Johnson has ordered all outdoor fires, including campfires, bonfires, pit fires, charcoal fires, or any other open flame fires prohibited on all private lands throughout Alpine County. This prohibition shall be reviewed by the Board of Supervisors at their next meeting and each meeting thereafter and will continue until terminated by action of the Board.
This goes with the closure announced Thursday of the 400,000-acre Carson Ranger District which includes Alpine County.

50th anniversary of the disappearance of Donna Ann Lass from South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Wed, 09/02/2020 - 3:32pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It was 1:15 a.m. on the morning of September 6, 1970 when nurse Donna Ann Lass was working in the first aid room of the Sahara Tahoe Hotel & Casino in Stateline, Nevada. She made a log entry just before her last patient entered the room 15 minutes later, one-half hour before getting off duty.
Donna was scheduled to make a log entry at 1:45 a.m. but it was never completed and she was never seen again. Although her car was found parked at her apartment she wasn't seen leaving the Sahara.
Safety changes: Vail moves to presale of lift tickets to manage number of guests
Submitted by paula on Sun, 08/30/2020 - 10:41amHeavenly, Kirkwood and Northstar, all members of the Vail Resorts family, will be operating differently during the winter season 2020/21. Vail plans on opening both Heavenly and Northstar on November 20 and Kirkwood on December 4.
Ticket sales, use of season passes and facility uses will all be handled to promote physical distancing and protect the safety of staff and guests.
