Road closure near Camino for next several months

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - Many from the South Lake Tahoe venture to the Camino area to visit apple and tree farms, but an upcoming road closure may affect normal routes.

A section of westbound Carson Road will be closed for several months due to bridge work as part of the U.S. Highway 50 Camino Safety Project.

Westbound Carson Road is closed between Carson Court and Sierra Blanca Road. Motorists are being detoured onto Highway 50 at Carson Road and back onto Carson Road via Sierra Blanca Road. The work involves building a new underpass as part of the $55.4 million project, which started construction earlier this fall. Eastbound Carson Road will remain open until the westbound portion of the new bridge is completed.

This project involves installing a new concrete center median barrier on Highway 50, increasing the shoulder width of the highway, constructing acceleration/deceleration lanes, building the undercrossing, providing access to the undercrossing from local roads, repairing culverts, and constructing a wildlife crossing under the highway.

The culvert work is from the Mosquito Road Undercrossing to the Schnell School Road Undercrossing in Placerville, with the other highway improvements occurring 0.2 miles west of Still Meadow Road to 0.2 miles east of Carson Road. Caltrans is partnering with the El Dorado County Department of Transportation on this project and the county is providing $7.3 million in funding for local road improvements. Completion is expected in 2022.

Caltrans reminds motorists to “Be Work Zone Alert” and slow in construction zones for the safety of travelers and work crews. Weather or unexpected events may delay or prolong the work. The department will issue construction updates on Twitter @CaltransDist3 and on Facebook at CaltransDistrict3.
