South Lake Tahoe Business EXPO on Friday

A record-breaking 100 businesses will participate in the 2014 Business EXPO –“Tahoe South in ACTION” this Friday, March 28. The event begins at 4:30pm and continues until 8:30pm in Harrah’s Lake Tahoe Convention Center. It will highlight South Shore businesses’ goods and services to an anticipated crowd of 1,200 attendees.

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) is currently taking nominations for the Lake Spirit Awards honoring real people making real progress at protecting Lake Tahoe. Members of the public are encouraged to nominate exemplary members of our community who have gone above and beyond the call of duty to protect the beauty and clarity of the Lake.

Leap Of Faith, Art Exhibit at Nevada Museum of Art

Santa Cruz-based artist Andrea Borsuk will create a new site-specific mural installation portraying the journey from the California coast to the Nevada desert. By layering paintings, drawings, and objects on top of a wall mural to imply a narrative trajectory, Borsuk explores the precarious notion of time and destiny.

3-D Sandbox exhibit brings Lake Tahoe watersheds to life

Sandboxes have come a long way. A new interactive, augmented-reality exhibit brings watersheds to life at the University of California, Davis' Tahoe Science Center in Incline Village, Nev.

Participants run their hands through real sand, forming mountains, lakes and rivers, while a 3-D camera and digital projector allowusers to create virtual topography in real time, make it "rain" and watch where the water flows.

Tahoe Area Sierra Club Summer Party

The Tahoe Area Sierra Club's annual Summer Party will be celebrated July 17th at Regan Beach. 5pm to 8pm. The sunset party will include an exhibit by local photographer Jon Paul, music and a silent auction. Gourmet food will be served along with select wine from Naked Wines. Tickets available at Aspen Hollow Nursery, Lake of the Sky Outfitters, Emerald Bay Nursery and League to Save Lake Tahoe.
$35.00 in advance and $40.00 at the door.

Valhalla Renaissance Faire returns for 21st year in June

The 21st Valhalla Renaissance Faire, June 1-2 and 8-9, will exhibit the pleasures and pageantry of the Elizabethan era. Costumed players perform at Camp Richardson Resort in the shady lanes and byways, and sell their wares from market stalls filled with fine handmade crafts.

The winners of the Carson Memories photo contest were announced this week in a ceremony held at the Carson Nugget.
The Carson Memories contest asked participants to submit their favorite photos demonstrating something special or distinct about the Carson City area.

The winning photos, along with the other select photos, are being incorporated into an exhibit created by Gardnerville artist, Beverly Caputo. The exhibit is featured next to a recently finished mural painted by Caputo. The mural depicts key people, places and things of historical relevance to Carson City.

Lake Tahoe South Non-Profits to see $65,000 from American Century Championship

The American Century Championship will distribute $65,000 to Lake Tahoe South area charities, officials announced Monday.
The Lance Armstrong Foundation, the celebrity golf tournament’s nationally designated charity, in partnership with the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority, NBC Sports and American Century Investments, will provide funds to area non-profit organizations for specific needs to help make a difference in the community.

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency would like to invite the community to its Community Appreciation Day Open House and Lake Spirit Awards on Thursday, September 27 from 4 – 7 p.m. at the TRPA offices at 128 Market Street in Stateline.

South Lake Tahoe is home to LEGO summer brick project

An exhibit for one of the world's most famous toys is in South Lake Tahoe right now. The LEGO Summer Brickation gives kids and families a chance to put their building skills to work.
LEGO's of all shapes and sizes fill the entire exhibit in Heavenly Village. If you're 10 years old, life doesn't get much better than this.
"Instead of having to drive down in California to go to LEGOLAND, we can just come here," says 10-year-old Griffin Howell.
You can't just find something like this anywhere you go. This hands-on exhibit is only in three other cities across the country this summer.

UNR archeologist leads Virginia City hospital excavation team

The University of Nevada, Reno, in cooperation with the Nevada State Historic Preservation Office, has sent a team of archaeologists to excavate the site of one of Nevada’s most important early hospitals. St. Mary Louise Hospital in Virginia City opened in 1876 and served the mining community until the early 20th century.

Environmental art exhibit 'Visualizing Change' at Lake Tahoe through July

The Lake Tahoe Science Consortium collaborated with University of Nevada, Reno’s Department of Art to create “Visualizing Change,” a photographic art expedition intended to convey concepts in environmental restoration at Lake Tahoe to the scientific community and general public. The exhibit is located in the Prim Desert Research Library at Sierra Nevada College at Lake Tahoe’s Incline Village. It features photography and oil painting contributions from eight noted artists and is free and open to the public through July 27.

Thunderbird Lodge at Lake Tahoe among several Nevada Tourism grant winners

Needed improvements at the Thunderbird Lodge got a lift on Wednesday when the Nevada Commission on Tourism announced the Lake Tahoe site was among several to win an improvement project grant.
Grants were awarded to 19 different projects. The announcement was made by Nevada Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki.
NCOT's Projects Relating to Tourism Grants program help fund infrastructure improvements that will attract visitors, and after a temporary suspension due to a decline in tourism revenues, the grants were reinstated this year.

Ashley Pfister has art in her blood. Pfister grew up in a small Connecticut town. From an early age Pfister enjoyed building things with her father and spending time outdoors. Her artistic imagination led to an early career in mud pies and mud Easter eggs, which she hid around the neighborhood for other kids to find.

Hicks, who lives in Strawberry, CA with her son, says that her photographs reveal the things that people often don’t see, and this is what she finds most interesting in her subjects. She favors black and white film, because “It’s more honest.”

UNR scientists explore climate change in the Sierra using art

Scientists from the University of Nevada, Reno helped renowned environmental artists Helen Mayer Harrison and Newton Harrison create an exhibition on display at the Nevada Museum of Art in downtown Reno that predicts the potential effects of climate change on the Sierra Nevada mountains.

“The exhibition by the Harrisons helps people see how climate change may alter natural areas that many of us enjoy,” Thomas Albright, professor of geography in the University’s College of Science, said.

Edgewood Companies plans summer opening of Bonanza Park

The tired old C&M Lodge, located at 1209 Bonanza Avenue, was completely removed this last summer with more than 50 percent of building materials recycled in the sustainable deconstruction effort by Edgewood Companies. Edgewood acquired the C&M Lodge in order to reuse the associated Transient Occupancy Units (TAUs) on its new Lodge Project at the Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course, according to a news release.
