Voters to select new California State Senator to represent District 1 on June 4

There is a Special Runoff Election on June 4, 2019 scheduled to fill a vacancy in Senate District 1. All currently registered voters in the County of El Dorado are eligible to participate.

When Ted Gaines won a seat on the California Board of Equalization in November, the Senate District 1 seat he had held since 2011 was up for grabs. In March there was an election to decide his replacement, but since no candidate won more than 50 percent of the vote the top two are now on Tuesday's ballot.

Felons arrested for shooting guns in Meyers

Four visitors to the South Shore were arrested by El Dorado County Sheriff's deputies on Friday night after they were caught shooting firearms on U.S. Forest Service land behind Tahoe Paradise Golf Course in Meyers.

On December 16, deputies responded to a call of shooting about 100 yards from the end of Lost Lane. Upon arrival they found four men, Alexander, Keoseng, Johlany and Yao Saechao with guns. Alexander and Keoseng are convicted felons from Stockton, Calif., and are prohibited from possessing firearms. All four were arrested and booked into the El Dorado County Jail.

Letter to the Editor: Why vote for Bernie Sanders

In a representative democracy, the system the United States supposedly has, the policy making is controlled by the representatives elected by the people. The idea behind representative democracy is that people will elect representatives that will serve their best interest. However, in the United States the funding for election campaigns is provided by large corporations, banks, and a handful of wealthy individuals that results in the election of representatives who serve the best interests of the large corporations, banks, and wealthy individuals.

El Dorado County officials join SLT Police Chief Uhler in opposition of Prop 47

The list of people against California's Proposition 47 grew today with the addition of El Dorado County District Attorney Vern Pierson, Sheriff John D'Agostini and County Supervisors joining the fight against what has been touted "The Safe Neighborhood and Schools Act."

Prop 47: Safer schools and neighborhoods or 10,000 convicted felons on the streets?

Being touted as "The Safe Neighborhoods and Schools Act" by proponents, Proposition 47 will mandate misdemeanors instead of felonies for “non-serious, nonviolent crimes," unless the defendant has prior convictions for murder, rape, certain sex offenses or certain gun crimes.

The reason Prop 47 got this name is because a fund bearing it's name will be created by the estimated savings of $150M to $250M the state will receive by not having to prosecute crimes that would become misdemeanors.

Here is an overview of some of them:
