Voters to select new California State Senator to represent District 1 on June 4

There is a Special Runoff Election on June 4, 2019 scheduled to fill a vacancy in Senate District 1. All currently registered voters in the County of El Dorado are eligible to participate.

When Ted Gaines won a seat on the California Board of Equalization in November, the Senate District 1 seat he had held since 2011 was up for grabs. In March there was an election to decide his replacement, but since no candidate won more than 50 percent of the vote the top two are now on Tuesday's ballot.

They are both Republicans and current members of the California State Assembly, Brian Dahle and Kevin Kiley.

Brian Dahle is currently a Republican member of the California State Assembly, representing District 1. He was elected to the office on November 6, 2012. Dahle's professional experience includes working as the Lassen County supervisor and operating a seed mill and managing 2,000 acres of farmland inherited from his grandfather. Prior to his work as county supervisor, he worked for biomass and hydroelectric power companies and a gold-mining firm. Dahle was just reelected to his current seat in November 2018.

Kevin Kiley is currently a Republican member of the California State Assembly, representing District 6. Kiley was elected to the office on November 8, 2016. After graduating from Harvard, he became a 10th-grade English at a high school in South Central Los Angeles before going to Yale Law School. He joined Irell & Manella, where he represented individuals and businesses in high stakes litigation. Later, as a Deputy Attorney General, Kevin represented the People of California in cases involving convicted felons. Kevin and his business partner, former U.S. Congressman Doug Ose, own and operate Ose-Kiley Cattle.

In the March 2019 primary for District 1 Senator election, Dahle earned 29.4 percent of the vote, or 55,579, and Kiley received 53,563 votes or 28.4 of the vote.

Both Kiley and Dahler currently earn a base salary of $104,118/year with a per diem of $183/day as assemblymen.

No matter who wins Tuesday there will be an open seat in the Assembly that will need to be filled..
