Laser measurement of Sierra snowpack from the air being considered in Sacramento

At a price tag of $150 million, the California legislature is considering a bill that, if approved, would change the way the Sierra snowpack is measured each year.

For 90 years the snowpack has been measured at several locations including Phillips, just west of Lake Tahoe. Normally performed in front of media, staff from the California Department of Water Resources (DWR) snowshoe into a spot where they stick a pole into the snow to measure the depth and water content of the snow.

In his memory, the Mitch Underhill Mountain Fund has been created at Lake Tahoe Community College.

"He was so loved in the community," said his widow Sarah. "He was an inspiration."

Body Found Friday Morning in Folsom Lake

A body was recovered from Folsom Lake on Friday morning and there is a possibility that is one of the four missing boaters from May 10's deadly speedboat accident.

The El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office and State Park Rangers responded to a call from a citizen who spotted the body at 9:50 a.m.

The male adult was found near the mouth of the American River. Helicopters were called into the area in hopes of finding the other missing boaters presumed dead in the crash of a speed boat who witnesses say was going 100 m.p.h.

Wet Storm Pounds Lake Tahoe; Mostly Rain at Lake Level, Heavy Snow at Summits

A wet storm pounded the west coast over the last four days, dropping 3-5 feet snow over the Sierra and bringing drought ridden Folsom Lake up 6 feet. A strong atmospheric river with a lot of moisture from the subtropics was funneled into the area, creating swollen streams, rivers and minor flooding.

With snow levels fluctuating between 7500-8000 feet Sunday afternoon, South Lake Tahoe saw mostly rain, but the slopes of nearby ski resorts saw feet of snow, instead of the recent storm totals recorded in inches, added to their terrain.

Search Begins in Folsom Lake for 1965 Plane Wreckage

Low water levels in Folsom Lake are allowing El Dorado County and Placer County Sheriffs to search for plane that crashed into Folsom Lake on January 1, 1965.

Frank Wilcox, a Shingle Springs man, is hoping the dramatic drop in the level of Folsom Lake will finally reveal the wreckage of the Piper Comanche that went to the bottom following a mid-air collision, killing Wilcox's older brother and three other people.
