Red Flag Warning, Lake WInd Advisory and snow forecast for South Lake Tahoe in days ahead

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Mark Twain said "the air up there in the clouds is very pure and fine, bracing and delicious," and this week that air will be colder than it has been. There is a little bit of everything in the five day forecast for South Lake Tahoe.

Column: Climate change front and center at Tahoe

As ashes fell delicately from a blazing orange sky earlier this week, Lake Tahoe got a jarring glimpse of just one of the threats of the climate crisis. The frequency and intensity of wildfires in the West are breaking records and destroying communities. Scientists are also measuring wilder weather patterns, more severe droughts, and changing ecosystems as the planet’s temperature rises. More drought means more dead trees, and hotter summers mean a longer and more
severe fire season.

South Lake Tahoe forecast: Some near freezing nights, cooler week ahead

Mac the Naw says Merry Fishmas to all and wait awhile longer for Sierra lakes to ice over

Hello fellow anglers. I am happy to say, the winter solstice has come and gone. Meaning, each day now brings one minute longer of daylight. But as we all know, that does not mean it will get any warmer soon. Down here in the Minden and Carson Valleys we've experienced an average of 7 to 10 degree mornings.

Most would think that the higher lakes would be frozen and iced over. I received a report from fellow angler Josh Otto last week. As Josh told me, Caples Lake had high winds and was down right cold and had waves blowing across the lake.

City wants citizens to be prepared for high winds and cold temperatures

Brrrrrr...

The week ahead in South Lake Tahoe will be a clear one, but very cold as a strong high pressure system builds over the Sierra causing prolonged periods of strong morning inversions.

High pressure will then build in over the region for all of next week, with daytime temperatures mild and overnight lows remaining well below freezing.

Warming temps for South Lake Tahoe

Clear skies and light winds are expected through the coming week as a ridge of high pressure along the west coast gradually strengthens, leading a slow warming trend.

Aside from some freezing fog near Truckee and the Sierra Valley, benign conditions remain on tap for the near future as that high pressures continues to build. According to some modules, there is the potential for cooler and wetter weather toward the end of the first week of October, but in the meantime its dry with above normal temperatures by the weekend.

Here is the forecast from the National Weather Service in Reno:

Chance of upper level snow as the first day of fall approaches

Seasonable temperatures and dry conditions will prevail this weekend, but change is in the air. A series of cold fronts will produce gusty winds on Monday and Wednesday followed by below average temperatures for much of next week and chances for isolated showers. Light snow is possible in higher elevations, while low temperatures may dip to near freezing in some lower valleys. In South Lake Tahoe, Wednesday morning lows are expected to be below freezing - are you ready?

Small fire breaks out in attic furnace room at TJ Maxx in South Lake Tahoe

A fire broke out in a furnace room at the South Lake Tahoe TJ Maxx store just before 7:00 p.m. Monday night, resulting in the store filling up with smoke and water.

South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue personnel responded, and found the store's sprinkler system was able to keep the fire from spreading and it was contained to the one room.

The furnace was located above the store's dressing rooms. With all of the water used to put out the fire, the ceiling collapsed and created quite a mess in that portion of the store.

Broken water pipes could continue to be an issue with upcoming cold weather

The forecast for South Lake Tahoe over the next seven days calls for cold temperatures, winds and several inches of snow, a recipe for an increased risk of broken pipes in homes and businesses in the area.

Last week, both a private home on Saddle Road and the Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe suffered through broken pipes, a scene that the SLT Fire Rescue Department sees about two dozen times a year. Over the last seven years, SLTFR has responded to 168 calls for broken water pipes. Local plumbers have responded to hundreds of others as well.
