National focus on South Lake Tahoe's snowpack during Operation Sierra Storm
Submitted by paula on Mon, 01/30/2017 - 2:24pmThe annual television meteorologist's conference, Operation Sierra Storm (OSS), couldn't have happened at a better time to bring the national spotlight to early January's storms fondly nicknamed Snowmageddon and Januburied.
Jim Cantore and Paul Goodloe, leading correspondents at The Weather Channel, both broadcast live from Heavenly Mountain Resort and showcased South Lake Tahoe’s powder-filled ski conditions for two days, eight hours each day during the historic snowfall January 10-13, 2017.

Paddle all day long on September 12 in memory of a loved one who died of cancer, someone who survived cancer, or just to support the South Lake Tahoe Cancer League.
Stand Up for Cancer will raise funds for the league which is an all volunteer, non-profit organization that offers grants and transportation to local cancer patients. The event is supported by SUP Paddle South Lake Tahoe
How the selling of LTCC bonds show what the nation thinks of Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Fri, 08/14/2015 - 8:57pmAfter the passing of the $55 million Lake Tahoe Community College General Bond, known as Measure F in November, the next step was to sell the bonds.
On August 6, 2015, $19 million of Series A bonds were sold at a much better rate than anyone expected. When the market opened at 7 a.m. PST, investors were ready to jump on these bonds and it only took two hours to sell them, and waiting in the wings were another $54.4 million in orders.
The biggest single investor was State Farm Insurance who bought about 25% of the bonds or, $4.7 million.

Zeds Dead and Kill the Noise will be headlining Bass Camp Festival III at the Hard Rock Casino Lake Tahoe on July 25.
As part of the resort's BaseJam Summer 2015 Outdoor Concert Series these two bands join over 30 other artists in a day long festival on Saturday July 25. The day of entertainment gets underway at 11 a.m.
Contractor seeks $9 million from owners of Lake Tahoe Hard Rock Hotel & Casino
Submitted by paula on Mon, 05/11/2015 - 7:55pmSMC Construction Company has filed paperwork in Douglas County Court, seeking payment of $9,654,575.02 they say Neva One, LCC, and Jon and David Park still owe them on construction of the Hard Rock Casino & Hotel in Stateline, Nevada.
The detailed legal documents state that SMC Construction and Neva One, LLC had come to the agreement of $9,645,121 for the remodel on the former Horizon Casino on August 6, 2014. Updated plans changed hands several times, even after the work began according to the paperwork filed in court.
Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Lake Tahoe names new VP/GM

The former man in the position, Don Marrandino, left a month ago after overseeing the construction and opening phases of the Hard Rock which opened January 28, 2015.
Kelly Keagy and Night Ranger looking forward to playing at Hard Rock Lake Tahoe

We covered everything from playing discos in my hometown of Fremont, CA in the 70s to playing in large arenas with the likes of Kiss and ZZTop, to playing at the Hard Rock Casino Lake Tahoe this weekend.
Keagy is one of the founding members of the band Night Ranger. He and buddies Jack Blades and Brad Gillis formed the band in 1979, and the three are still performing around the world as well as recording albums today.
Dancing With the Tahoe Stars ends in a tie; McDaniel wins People's Choice

South Lake Tahoe teacher Lisa McDaniel and Lake Tahoe Unified School Board Member Ginger Nicolay-Davis each ended up with the top honors in the first ever tie. The tiebreaker combined judge's scores, ticket donations and crowd noise.
Barton Health offers fitness training for local running events

The community is invited to join Barton Health’s “Train for an Event Fitness Challenge” from March to June.
“Whether you are just getting off the couch or a seasoned athlete, this program is designed to motivate you and make you game day ready for one of our local race events,” said Krista Carson, Barton Health’s program coordinator.

As I look back at what happened in South Lake Tahoe over the last 365 days, a lot happened, but what may seem to be a top story to me may not seem as important to a reader.
I reviewed our analytics, the numbers that are kept to show how many people read South Tahoe Now stories at any given point, and drew from those numbers to come up with the "South Lake Tahoe's Top Stories of 2014."
News signs go up at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Mon, 12/22/2014 - 11:55pmAnother step in the right direction for the economic revitalization of South Lake Tahoe and the Highway 50 corridor occurred at the site of the new Hard Rock Casino Hotel and Casino this week.
The old Horizon sign came down and the Hard Rock sign went up.
This sign is just part of the $60 million renovation going on at the site of the original Sahara Tahoe.

On Monday, November 24, their Executive Chef Jonathan Snyder delivered 48 turkeys to Sierra Community Church, who will serve them in their community kitchen and distribute the rest to local families in need for Thanksgiving.

Thirty-six employers will be on hand at the Tahoe Regional Job Fair being held in Kings Beach on November 7.
Employers include TRPA, Hyatt Regency, Northstar, Squaw Valley, Alpine Meadows, Wyndham Vacation Ownership, Raley's, PlumpJack Squaw Valley, Westshore Cafe and Inn, Hard Rock Casino Lake Tahoe, the Ritz-Carlton, along with many others.
THe fair will be held at the North Tahoe Event Center at 8318 North Lake Blvd. Register for the event on line. The event will be held from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Hard Rock Casino gives back to the South Lake Tahoe community

The company has a history of local philanthropy, and South Lake Tahoe will be no different.
Workers strike gas line at site of new Hard Rock Casino
Submitted by paula on Thu, 09/11/2014 - 3:40pmA 4" gas line was stuck by construction crews Thursday morning at the site of the new Hard Rock Casino. Several emergency vehicles responded, lining the street, bringing concern by people passing through the casino corridor at approximately 9:30 a.m.
Tahoe-Douglas Fire Department and the The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office responded to the old Horizon Casino. Fire personnel ordered the evacuation of the 55 construction and staff workers and the closure of Highway 50.
Former Horizon Casino in Lake Tahoe to become a Hard Rock Casino & Hotel

This comes amid local speculation and rumors that have been circling the community since the Horizon's closure this spring.
The new casino has a facebook page and website already.
Hard Rock Lake Tahoe is undergoing $60M in renovations and redesign that will highlight rock and roll and will also serve as a live music venue.
South Shore's Horizon Casino Resort to Close April 1
Submitted by paula on Wed, 03/05/2014 - 9:20pmAn era comes to an end on April 1 when the Horizon Casino Resort on the south shore of Lake Tahoe closes for renovations.
The resort was the one time local showcase of Elvis Presley and Liberace when the casino operated as Del Webb's Sahara Tahoe. In 1990 Del Webb sold the property to Kentucky based Columbia Sussex Corporation for $19 million.
Columbia Sussex owners, the Yung family, are the current operators under the corporate name, LV Casino LLC. Their lease ran out and long time Lake Tahoe and Carson Valley ranchers, the Park family, will take control after March 31.
