Made in Tahoe: Local woman adds spice to life

From behind the island in a large stone and brick kitchen, Diane Weidinger goes about her business, carefully filling small tins with her spice blends to be shipped to customers near and far. Along with jars, tubs are stacked on a table at the end of the island. More jars crowd one end of the countertop. Forest Service reminds public no fireworks on New Year's

At the urging of the U.S. Forest Service, visitors to the Lake Tahoe Basin should leave their fireworks at home over the New Year's holiday.
“The use of all fireworks is prohibited on all national forests and national grasslands. Regulations are enforced, and violation is punishable as a misdemeanor by a fine of not more than $5,000, or imprisonment of not more than six months, or both,” said Forest Supervisor Nancy Gibson.

Cave Rock and Sand Harbor boat launches closed Christmas and New Years Day

The Lake Tahoe boat launch facilities at Cave Rock and Sand Harbor are closing on both Christmas, December 25, and New Year’s Day, January 1, 2012. No inspections or decontaminations will be available either of these days.
These closures are due to the holidays and program staff shortages. Normal operating hours throughout the winter are daily, 6 a.m. to 4 p.m., at Cave Rock and Saturday and Sunday, 6 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Sand Harbor. Efforts are underway to adjust and extend these hours to better accommodate fishermen.

Bookstore pops up at the Village Center

Shoppers who visit the just-opened Lake Tahoe Books and Art store in the Village Center won’t just be tackling their holiday gift lists — they’ll also be part of an experiment.
The store, which will be open through December and possibly longer, is in part a test to see if there is enough community support for a permanent, full-service bookstore at the South Shore.

TRPA Brings Holiday Cheer to Families in Need

Staff and members of the Governing Board at the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency got into the holiday spirit this year by trying to make the holidays a little nicer for some local children and families in need.

“We know many local families are struggling this year,” said Jill Larson, one of the organizers of TRPA’s holiday drive. “The staff really wanted to help,” she said.

TRPA Planner Earns Chamber’s Blue Ribbon Award

Tahoe Regional Planning Agency employee Gary Weigel was honored as the recipient of the South Shore Chamber of Commerce’s Blue Ribbon Award in the Public Agency Service category for his exemplary customer service as a Senior Planner at TRPA.

“I was shocked and pleasantly surprised when I found out I had been selected for a Blue Ribbon Award by the community,” Weigel said, “but also very excited. It’s a tremendous honor.”

TRPA’s Executive Director, Joanne Marchetta, agreed.

Moving Forward after The IHOP Tragedy

The windows on the front of the Carson City IHOP were broken when a gunman opened fire inside the restaurant last month. Saturday morning, workers could be seen inside and outside of the restaurant on South Carson Street - putting in new windows. An IHOP spokesperson told KOLO 8 News Now that the restaurant is scheduled to reopen before the holidays, however she would not give an exact date. On this same weekend, members of the community came together to help out those who survived the shooting rampage. Go here for the story and video.
