Plenty of Christmas Tree permits remain available in Lake Tahoe Basin

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Plenty of permits to cut down Christmas trees in the Lake Tahoe Basin remain at both sales locations. Due to permits being sold out after just a week in the past, people were only allowed to buy one of the $10 permits per family this year.

The result is plenty of leftovers.

Column: Tahoe Regional Planning Agency celebrates 50 Years

The year was 1969. And what a year it was. On July 20, 1969—the Viet Nam War was raging—American Neil Armstrong became the first person to set foot on the surface of the moon. For much of the decade, America and indeed the world had been mesmerized by the space race.

No planned weekend traffic relief in Meyers this winter

MEYERS, Calif. - Residents attending the El Dorado County Town Hall meeting in Meyers on Thursday didn't hear what they wanted to about the upcoming winter and any plans that could be put in place to alleviate traffic jams in neighborhoods.

As is the case with all meetings concerning traffic in Meyers, there were several audience members with ideas from instituting maximum vehicles allowed in the Lake Tahoe Basin to turn restrictions and road closures during specific hours.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - As the doors opened at Whole Foods in South Lake Tahoe Wednesday morning, the line that had wrapped around the building made its way into the much-anticipated store grand opening.

The line started forming at 6:00 a.m.

Column: Be Well During the Holidays

It’s happening, already. You have probably seen them.....in every store....Christmas decorations! Every year it happens: Halloween and Thanksgiving are way-sided by Christmas displays. Here are a few suggestions for how to overcome the anxiety resulting from the displays that are distracting our attention.

No One Can Make You Do Anything

Letters: I live in Rocky Point. This is why I support the Loop Road Project.

You know how frustrating it is for residents who live on North Upper Truckee, Sawmill, and countless other ‘shortcut’ streets during holidays when everyone is trying to leave town on their roads, usually driving too fast, backing up traffic, and not showing much respect for the people who live there?

That’s my life every day.

Keep Tahoe Blue volunteers pick up over 1,200 pounds of litter after fireworks

7/10/19 Update - The stats in this story are updated with recalculated totals.

* * *

Today, 402 people volunteered along the shoreline of Lake Tahoe to protect this national treasure. As part of a lakewide cleanup organized by the League to Save Lake Tahoe (Keep Tahoe Blue), participants removed 1240.25 pounds of litter that would have harmed the Lake’s ecology.

South Lake Tahoe removes Columbus Day in favor of Indingenous People's Day

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Columbus Day has been a holiday at the federal level since 1934, one that honored Christopher Columbus for, what was once thought, the discovery of America.

In the last two decades, a lot of information has been uncovered that said, while Columbus was a brilliant mariner, he exploited and enslaved the indigenous population (according to the final volume of a compendium of Columbus-era documents published by the University of California, Los Angeles's Medieval and Renaissance Center in 2004).

South Lake Tahoe's SnowGlobe: "It’s a great event, it's in the wrong location"

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Lake Tahoe City Council voted Tuesday to give SnowGlobe a new five-year contract with the criteria that organizers must be working on locating a new location for the event at the end of two years.

If they do not have a good plan in place after those first two years the City could terminate the contract.

Could Meyers have a second roundabout by 2021?

A change is proposed for the Pioneer Trail - Highway 50 intersection in Meyers, but what that change will look like is unknown.

During a public meeting on Wednesday, the El Dorado County Transportation Department (EDCDOT) and their planning partners unveiled posters of the two options for the intersection: a roundabout or an upgraded signal (doing nothing is also an option). Community members asked questions, left ideas on a map and are now encouraged to continue in the process by submitting comments.

Road closures planned to alleviate South Lake Tahoe and Meyers holiday traffic woes

Event Date:
June 18, 2019 - 6:00pm

In anticipation of traffic congestion during the upcoming 4th of July and Labor Day holidays, El Dorado County (EDC) is hosting a public meeting to discuss traffic control measures in the Lake Tahoe Basin on Tuesday, June 18 at 6:00 p.m. at the California Conservation Corps building.

El Dorado County Department of Transportation (EDCDOT) will present a traffic congestion circulation alternative that officially and temporarily closes portions of both Sawmill Road and North Upper Truckee at Highway 50.

South Lake Tahoe shelter participating in National Animal Care and Control Appreciation Week

National Animal Care and Control Appreciation Week is April 7 through 13, 2019, a time to recognize the many contributions of Animal Services officers, shelter and office staff, and volunteers in El Dorado County.

“Working and volunteering in the animal services field requires a strong passion for helping animals and serving others,” said Henry Brzezinski, Chief of El Dorado County Animal Services. “The work can sometimes be difficult, but we love what we do. We are very grateful for our dedicated staff and volunteers!”

Letter: Solution to Meyers traffic problems

We are not unique in the fact that traffic apps have been showing shortcuts and causing headaches in neighborhoods, which have become freeways filled with people speeding through them to "save" up to a minute on their commute.

We do not have the luxury of support from our elected officials as other communities do, so we must come up with a solution ourselves.

Meyers is under siege every weekend with tourists trying to get home after a long weekend of enjoying what we sometimes take for granted and they are using traffic apps to try to get around the gridlock.

City of South Lake Tahoe and owners group reach agreement on Measure T lawsuit

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The City and the South Lake Tahoe Property Owner's Group have reached an agreement on the enforcement of Measure T, a voter-initiated ballot measure to remove over 1,300 vacation home rentals from neighborhoods by the year 2021.

There were two major portions of the measure though that were to go into effect immediately, a change to occupancy rates and a halt to the issuing of new permits for the vacation accommodations made popular by websites like Airbnb.

Standstill on South Lake Tahoe area highway and streets; Groups looking into solution

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It's almost a perfect storm for traffic in Lake Tahoe: extra visitors in town for the holiday weekend and epic ski conditions with snow and chain requirements over US50 and Echo Summit.

On Monday, locals and visitors alike were part of that storm, leaving motorists stranded along US 50, Lake Tahoe Blvd., and all surface streets in Meyers that have a link to the highway over Echo Summit.

Column: Healthy ways to avoid holiday blues

The holiday season can be a happy and joyous time, bringing family and friends together. But for some, it can be a stressful and lonely time, leading to symptoms of depression. When stress is at its peak, unhealthy behaviors, such as drinking alcohol, using drugs, and overeating, tend to take over. Though people use these behaviors to cope and escape difficult emotions, they tend to make things worse.
