Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows will be hosting a seasonal job interview fair Saturday, November 3 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The job fair will take place at the Olympic House at Squaw Valley and will include interviews for a wide range of positions including ski/snowboard school instructors, lift operations, grooming, terrain parks, culinary services, rental services, retail, security, product sales and services, and parking. Opportunities include full-time as well as part time positions. Skiing or snowboarding abilities are not required for all available positions.

The latest Tahoe Project interview is with Leona Allen, a lifelong Tahoe resident, a Lake Valley Fire Protection District firefighter and a founder of the Lake Tahoe Basin Fire Academy. Hosted by Michelle Sweeney, Allen shares insight into wildfire preparedness, her family's experience of loss in the Angora fire and the success of the Fire Academy where she is among the program faculty at Lake Tahoe Community College.

And they're off. Two incumbents — Hal Cole and Bruce Grego — will face three and possibly four challengers in the race for two seats on the South Lake Tahoe City Council in November.

The filing period ended at 5 p.m. Friday. If one of the incumbents had not filed, the filing period would have been extended by five days.

After nearly a four-year absence, 50-year-old survival expert Les Stroud will return as Survivorman on Sunday August 19, at 8 p.m. Eastern. Earlier this year, Stroud traveled to the mountains of Norway and the desert island of Tiburon in Mexico to record four new hour-long shows for Discovery. He left as he always does, without food and water while hauling 65 pounds of camera gear to record his every move. Everything was the same, except this time Stroud decided to up the ante by spending 10 days alone in the wilderness instead of the usual week.

In a space agency filled with trailblazers, Sally K. Ride was a pioneer of a different sort. The soft-spoken California physicist broke the gender barrier 29 years ago when she rode to orbit aboard space shuttle Challenger to become America’s first woman in space.

Ride, 61, died in La Jolla, Calif. after a 17-month battle with pancreatic cancer, NASA reports on Monday.

SACRAMENTO — The director of California's state parks system resigned Friday after officials discovered that her department had $54 million in unspent money in its accounts that it had not reported to the state finance department.
Ruth Coleman, who had led the agency since 2003, stepped down, and the department's second-in-command, Acting Deputy Director Michael Harris, was fired.
California Resources Secretary John Laird planned a 1 p.m. news conference to address the issue and issued a statement saying the state Attorney General's Office would be investigating.

When Mammoth Mountain Ski Area announced last week (June 21) that it would close down the June Mountain ski area at least until the end of the 2012-13 ski season, the reaction was swift and tense.

The clams don’t have any natural predators in Tahoe and as a result have taken over significant swaths of the lake floor where they cause damage to the ecological system and can sometimes cause economic damage by spurring algae blooms and other effects damaging to Tahoe’s water and beaches.

Insights into how policies have evolved at Lake Tahoe to better focus efforts on the pollutants causing Tahoe’s declining clarity are discussed in an interview hosted by Michelle Sweeney at TahoeProject.org.
