Sales tax revenues increase in South Lake Tahoe and El Dorado County

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Quarterly reports on the sales tax received by the City of South Lake Tahoe and El Dorado County (EDC) were released this week. The quarter ending September 2019 shows the County's taxable sales in the unincorporated area grew by 4.3 percent when compared to the same period in 2018. In South Lake Tahoe, taxable sales grew by 6.0 percent. County-wide including both cities within its boundaries saw a 5.1 percent increase. In comparison, the Sacramento region was up 4.5 percent.

Sales tax revenues increase in South Lake Tahoe and El Dorado County

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The winter of 2019 was a good one for both South Lake Tahoe and El Dorado County retailers, ski resorts, restaurants and others whose businesses collect sales tax, including online retailers selling goods in the area.

The first sales tax report for 2019 has been released, with $2,580,475 in gross receipts in South Lake Tahoe during Q4/Q1 and $11,976,387 in the unincorporated areas of El Dorado County. During the same two-quarter period the year before, tax revenues were $2,390,631 and $9,925,645 respectively.

Memorial Day Ceremony set for South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - American Legion Post 795 of South Lake Tahoe invites residents and visitors to join members of the American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary in remembering those who have died in service to our nation this Memorial Day. The ceremony will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, May 27, 2019, at Happy Homestead Cemetery located at 1261 Johnson Boulevard in South Lake Tahoe.

After the ceremony, the public is invited to join Legion and Auxiliary members for refreshments at the American Legion Hall, 2748 Lake Tahoe Boulevard, also in South Lake Tahoe.

Local Realtors donate 88 Easter baskets to South Lake Tahoe youth

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Local Realtors from South Lake Tahoe recently put on their bunny ears and delivered Easter baskets full of special treats for local youth.

The South Tahoe Association of REALTORS® (STAR) used funds from its Community Involvement Committee resources along with other donated funds to purchase 88 pre-made baskets from the South Lake Tahoe KMart. Volunteers shopped and delivered the baskets to the Family Resource Center and Live Violence Free Center in South Lake Tahoe.

Other possible sources of PCE contamination identified in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - With a 400 acre plume of tetrachloroethylene (PCE) in some of the South Lake Tahoe groundwater, agencies tasked with protecting the local drinking supply updated the community on cleanup efforts and the status of the plume Wednesday evening.

Authorities originally identified the chemical entered the groundwater at the site of the old Lake Tahoe Laundry Works which was located at the South Y Center that is now home to Raley's and KMart.

South Lake Tahoe drop-off locations and special event for Toys for Tots

In an effort to help children in the South Lake Tahoe community enjoy the holiday season, local U.S. Marine Corps Toys for Tots organizers will be collecting toys at several locations including a big event on Saturday, December 1 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Bring an unwrapped toy or book and help put a smile on the face of a local child.

Volunteers will be in front of Kmart at the Y in South Lake Tahoe with a vehicle from Jim Bagan Toyota and the goal is to stuff it full of toys for local youth.

Outpouring of love by South Shore community for Camp Fire victims

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It takes a tragedy to bring people together, no matter their politics, their income or twitter handle.

Many in the South Lake Tahoe and Meyers community remember where they were at 2:15 p.m. on Sunday, June 24, 2007 and what happened in the days that followed. The Angora Fire quickly tore through neighborhoods, destroying 251 homes and burning 3,100 acres. While it seems small in comparison with the monster fires of 2017 and 2018, it took everything from so many local families.

The community came together to help their friends and neighbors.

Possible South Lake Tahoe ban on Styrofoam

The list of New York City; Takoma Park, Maryland; Seattle, Washington; Washington DC; Miami Beach, Florida; Freeport and Portland, Maine; Nantucket, Massachusetts; Minneapolis, Minnesota; Portland, Oregon and San Francisco, California could soon have South Lake Tahoe added as the 113th California city or county to ban polystyrene. Berkeley has had a ban in place since 1988, the first California city to do so.

Valhalla Renaissance Faire returns to South Lake Tahoe

After an absence in 2016 due to construction on the campgrounds at Camp Richardson, the 25th anniversary of the Valhalla Renaissance Faire returns to the South Shore for one weekend, June 10-11, 2017.

A weekend of Olde England style merriment and celebration will take place through seven acres of woods in the historic Camp Richardson, taking people back to Elizabethan times, complete with the "Queen" herself.

SLT Cancer League opens annual Sees's Candy Store this week

It's time once again for the South Lake Tahoe Cancer League's annual See's Candy Store. Starting December 1, and going until December 24 if supplies last, the community can stop by their shop at the "Y" and help the non-profit group raise the funds needed to help local residents with cancer.

Seven-days-a-week the Cancer League will have their candy store open from noon to 5:00 p.m. in a previously vacant shop next to Beachhut Deli, just a few doors down from Starbucks in the Raley's/KMart center.

Kmart closing 64 more stores, South Lake Tahoe store is safe

Kmart is closing 64 stores across 28 states.

Sears Holdings, which owns Sears and Kmart, informed Kmart employees of the closures on Friday, according to several local news reports and multiple employees who spoke with Business Insider.

The stores that are closing will begin liquidation sales on September 22 and close by mid-December, employees said.

Liberty Utilities to close SLT office for four days

Liberty Utilities’ walk-in offices located in South Lake Tahoe and Tahoe Vista will both be closed on Friday, May 27th and Monday, May 30th.

The offices will be closed on Friday, May 27 to accommodate a billing system upgrade that will occur through the Memorial weekend. The Customer Care call center at 1-800-782-2506 will still be available from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. to accept credit and debit card payments and answer customer questions. Customers can also make credit and debit payments online at www.libertyutilities.com.

Mental Health Clinic moving into new home this week

The former City Council building on Lake Tahoe Blvd is the new home for El Dorado County Mental Health. They'll be packing up their current Johnson Avenue offices on Friday, September 5 and are planning on opening in their new location on Monday, September 8.

Over 500 South Lake Tahoe Students Complete We Can! Program

Congratulations to the five hundred and sixty-seven students from Lake Tahoe Unified School District who participated in Barton Health’s sixth annual We Can! program. We Can, which stands for Ways to Enhance Children's Activity & Nutrition, is a 7-week program designed for 4th and 5th graders that encourages healthy eating habits, activity, exercise, and overall wellness.
