SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Saint Joseph Community Land Trust (SJCLT) was awarded a Community Service Grant from the Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe Foundation. The grant was in the amount of $1,800 and will be applied to our Motel to Housing Loan Program. SJCLT Board Members, Lyn Barnett and MaryAnne Brand attended the awards ceremony at a luncheon held in Harrah’s South Lake Tahoe.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Over the last nine months, the Tahoe-Douglas Rotary Club has sponsored five Adopt-A-Day of Nourishments. Bread & Broth has been thrilled to have this service oriented organization partner with us to help ease hunger in the Lake Tahoe South Shore community. With their generously donated funds and over 70 hours of volunteering, the Rotarians served over 450 nutritious, filling meals to grateful diners who come to Grace Hall for a free dinner and a chance to spent time with friends and acquaintances.

A huge thank you to all those that came out and supported South Lake Tahoe Rotary’s recent fundraiser at Lake Tahoe Golf Course. Kevin Sommerfeld, Kelly Higgins and the whole support crew at the golf course were great hosts at their newly renovated clubhouse.

The cast of “Divorce Southern Style” put on 6 great performances and dedicated many hours to this very funny play. The show and set were a success because of their help in creating and attaining set props and pieces.

On March 29t, Bread & Broth’s Monday Meal diners had a special treat, a delicious Filipino themed dinner. The evening’s meal was lovingly prepared and served by the Filipino Community members for their annual Adopt-A-Day of Nourishment sponsorship. This fantastic group served up teriyaki chicken and vegetables, chicken adobo, steamed rice, coleslaw topped off with delicious desserts to the 93 attending dinner guests. Needless to say, there were no ‘leftovers’ at the end of the meal.

Kudos: Drug Store Project successful due to community partnerships

If you had walked onto the LTCC campus on Tuesday, April 3, you would have never guessed that there were 325 6th grade youth and 220 agency and volunteer workers throughout the corridors, all learning information on how and why to keep themselves safe from drugs. “Choices, what are yours?” was the theme of our efforts in keeping our youth drug free. With the country’s attitudes and norms about drug use changing, times are even more difficult for our kids.

Kirkwood’s Guest Services crew members Natasha Buffo, Dan Deemer and Richie Monroe traveled all the way from the Kirkwood Resort area to arrive at Grace Hall at 3:00 p.m. to lend their customer service skills and helping hands to the Bread & Broth volunteers.

The local Tahoe Douglas Elks Lodge #2670 has been an ongoing sponsor for Bread & Broth’s Adopt A Day of Nourishment (AAD) and generously hosts two to three sponsorship dinners annually. Their most current AAD sponsorship was at Bread and Broth’s (B&B) Monday Meal on March 12, and thanks to their sponsorship, B&B fed 84 dinner guests a ‘home style’ meatloaf dinner served with mashed potatoes with gray, broccoli and a green salad lovingly cooked and prepared by the B&B’s wonderful volunteer cooks.

Glowing reviews for South Tahoe High as accreditation team finishes visit

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The three member visiting accreditation committee from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) finished up their review at South Tahoe High School (STHS) today, parting with very positive comments about their experience.

"It is amazing what I've seen in two years," said Cheryl Townsend, Director of The Reach School in Sebastapol, Calif., and the only member of the accreditation team that originally reviewed the school in 2016. "There is a great level of intensity and quality at this school, give yourselves a hand."

Since 1989, Bread &Broth has been serving free hot dinners to thousands of diners every year. Beginning in 2010, the ‘Adopt A Day of Nourishment’ program was put into place to encourage individuals, churches, organizations and business to join B&B in providing these needed meals as a service to the our community.

Returning for his second Adopt a Day of Nourishment sponsorship of the year, Jeremy Woodford hosted Bread & Broth’s Monday Meal on January 15th. Jeremy returned with Barbara and Craig Brittain who also volunteered at Jeremy’s January 1st sponsorship. This trio of helpers assisted the B&B volunteers in serving the 76 dinner guests who came to St. Theresa Grace Hall for a hot, nutritious meal. At the Mexican themed dinner, the diners had a choice of beef enchiladas, pork enchiladas, refried beans, festive veggies, green salad, fruit salad and a varies of pies, cookies and cakes for dessert.

The Kiwanis Club of Tahoe Sierra is a service organization that dedicates its members to supporting charities and events which benefit the community, especially children. Every month the Kiwanis Club selects a different community program or organization to support, and for the month of January, the club has sponsored a Bread & Broth “Adopt a Day of Nourishment” for the last eight years.

As a young boy, Jeremy Woodford would attend Bread & Broth’s dinners with his family at Grace Hall. Now, many years later, Jeremy is “paying it forward” by hosting three B&B dinners so that others can also benefit from the same nourishing meals that helped him when he and his family were experiencing difficult times.

Normally the Camp Richardson Resort staff is busy seeing to the needs of their many visitors and guests but during the month of December, they shift their focus to helping the members of our community who are struggling with hunger. Through their Adopt A Day of Nourishment sponsorship, Camp Richardson hosted Bread & Broth’s Monday Meal dinner at St. Theresa Grace Hall on December 18 and provided meals for the 100 dinner guests that evening.

With funds provided by Vail’s EpicPromise grants, Heavenly Mountain Resort partners with Bread & Broth to annually host six Monday Meal dinners at St. Theresa Grace Hall. Every other month, Heavenly sponsors an “Adopt A Day of Nourishment” and sends a team of volunteers to help crew at their sponsorship dinner On. December 11th, hosting their last AAD of the year, Heavenly’s volunteer sponsor crew was manned by Michelle Beall, Kelly Campbell, Chris Eckert, Katie Ficeto and Frank Papandrea.

Kudos: Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless thankful for $15K gift

Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless is grateful to the Sierra Health Foundation for awarding a grant of $15,000 for the operation of the South Lake Tahoe Warm Room in 2017-2018. The Sierra Health Foundation is an independent foundation committed to supporting health-related activities in Northern California. The South Lake Tahoe Warm Room is an overnight emergency shelter that operates only during the winter months in our community.

Ameriprise Financial Services, Inc. has a legacy of giving back to the community and annually sponsors a corporate wide National Day of Service in November with the goal of ending hunger. This year, the South Lake Tahoe Ameriprise Financial Services’ office once again chose to join with Bread and Broth in their efforts to feed the hungry by sponsoring an “Adopt a Day of Nourishment” on November 13. This is their fifth November "Adopt A Day" in the last five years.

The City of South Lake Tahoe Recreation Services Team would like to extend our sincerest gratitude to local resident Greg Siomiak for volunteering to add some sparkle to our pickle ball courts. Greg has been instrumental in the addition of pickle ball to the recreation complex amenities and helping us keep the courts in the best possible condition. Recently Greg dedicated several hours to re-stripe the pickle ball courts and they look fabulous!

Cub Scout Pack 592 of South Lake Tahoe held their fifth annual Police and Fire Night at St. Theresa’s Grace Hall on November 14.

Thank you so much for all you did for us on the day we hiked Mt. Tallac. We enjoyed your company and couldn't have done it without you guys as our chaperones, or your encouragement.

The healthy, thoughtfully put together snack bags were so good, even the chipmunks were eyeballing them. They gave us the fuel to climb up the mountain and the taco truck gave us the motivation to do it. The tacos were delicious and so were delicious and so were the brownies!

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – A gracious “thank you” to those who participated in the “Faces of Homelessness” on October 26, 2017 at Valhalla, especially our primary event sponsors Temple Bat Yam and the Tahoe Chamber. It was warm inside the great room, with a fire roaring behind our presenters; however, their accounts of being homeless were quite chilling. Six adults and local middle school and high school youth provided touching accounts of their personal stories of homelessness to an audience of strangers.

Its election time and the only local issue is Measure C; an increase of one-half percent in local sales tax (excludes groceries and prescriptions) for a term of 15 years to fund road rehabilitation. I voted YES to the measure because there is no long term funding solution within the current budget or the foreseeable future. And, our roads are in terrible shape.

Bear gets a little help from his friends

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There weren't just hungry customers at IHOP in South Lake Tahoe Saturday morning, a hungry bear also decided to stop by.

The large bear got into the dumpster around 8:00 a.m. as staff was taking trash out on October 14, but once in he couldn't get out.

Lake Tahoe Community College shines during accreditation team visit

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The accreditation team visiting Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) left town Thursday, but not before speaking to a gathering of the school's administration, staff, students, board members and community partners.

"You guys do a great job," said Mike Claire, President at College of San Mateo and leader of the visiting accreditation team from the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC). "We have never found a college more well prepared than LTCC."

Working the serving line at Bread & Broth’s Monday Meal on September 25th were members of the Tahoe Douglas Elk Lodge #2670. J.J. Clause, Steve Kurek, Jim Plamenig and Gary Wendt came prepared to represent their fellow Elk Lodge members at the organization’s Adopt of Day of Nourishment and this enthusiastic group did a fine job hosting the 94 dinner guests who arrived at St. Theresa Grace Hall for the evening’s meal.

Sass Talk: VHRs, Martin Hollay and Yes on C

On Tuesday, a majority of city council agreed on a revised VHR (Vacation Home Rental) ordinance. In two weeks we will vote on the first reading of the ordinance and if a majority supports it, on November 7th would be the final vote to adopt the revised regulations and rules. The ordinance would then go into effect 30 days later.

On Tuesday September 27, Choices for Children hosted an early care and education (ECE) open house. ECE students and child care providers toured and observed classrooms at the Lake Tahoe Child Development Center on Spruce Avenue in South Lake Tahoe and learned about Early Childhood Environmental Rating Scale (ECERS). They enjoyed pizzas donated by Primo’s Italian Bistro and decadent cupcakes donated by Cake by Grace.

Choices for Children would like to express a special thank you to Jim and Grace for their generous donation. It was very much appreciated and made the evening lovely.

The Tahoe Women's Community Fund (TWCF) would like to thank all the community members who came out last Wednesday for the Modern Family Premiere in support of local families! With a fun filled evening of raffle prizes, popcorn, and good company, 150 locals raised almost $6,000 for local families. These funds will go into the 2018 grant cycle of the TWCF and will be open for any eligible non-profit to apply for.

Choices for Children of South Lake Tahoe would like to thank the Getaway Cafe of Meyers for their support on September 19, 2017.

They prepared delicious meals for those in Lake Tahoe’s early care and education field who were attending Choices for Children's Strengthening Families evening training on 'Children’s Social and Emotional Competence.'

The diners were in for a real treat when the B&B cooks whipped up fried catfish and french fries which received rave reviews from the meal’s guests.

Thanks to a generous donor, Temple Bat Yam hosted the August 14th Bread & Broth Monday Meal at St. Theresa Grace Hall. B&B, a non-profit, all volunteer organization, began feeding the needy of the Tahoe South Shore community in 1989 as a multi-denominational food outreach program. Throughout the past 28 years, volunteers of all faiths have supported the B&B program and Temple Bat Yam’s Adopt a Day of Nourishment dinner is a testament to the continuing support of all faiths in feeding the hungry of our community.

The $250 donated for the sponsorship meal enabled the B&B cooks to offer pulled pork and roast beef sandwiches, broccoli, cole slaw, and fruit salad on the evening’s menu.
