In an effort to clear up misinformation about the proposed US50 Community
Revitalization/Loop Road Project, the Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce (TahoeChamber) hosted a public meeting Thursday evening at the Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel. With the amount of negative public comments and voiced skepticism during past meetings, Measure T, and in social media, a larger group was expected than the 35 people who attended (and many of those were Tahoe Transportation and Tahoe Chamber staff).

As voters in California prepare to vote either for or against Proposition 64, the legalization of marijuana, the District Attorney of Denver has written a letter warning against "yes" votes, and shares what they learned as a state since legalizing the recreational use of the drug.

Mitchell R. Morrissey said the promises made in the proposition are "lies."

In a cost-cutting move, the Tahoe Paradise Resort Improvement District (TPRID) Board of Directors is looking at the possibility of consolidating their elections.

William E. Schultz, the El Dorado County Recorder-Clerk-Registrar of Voters, has presented the board with information on how to accomplish this goal which cost the small park district $5,833 in 2015. With just 605 votes cast in that election, this amount works out to be almost $10 per vote.

South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue responded to an early morning fire Sunday in the Stateline neighborhood of South Lake Tahoe.

At 2:00 a.m., crews from SLTFR and Lake Valley Fire responded to 1049 Chonokis Street to find flames shooting from the unoccupied home.

Damage is estimated at $150,000. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

10:30 a.m. update: The Ralph Fire, burning in the Heavenly Creek/Powerline Trail area above Ralph Drive in South Lake Tahoe, is now 60 percent contained.

Firefighters are now in mop-up mode and full containment is expected shortly according to the U.S. Forest Service.

The fourth fire to burn around South Lake Tahoe this week burned almost three acres early Friday morning in heavy brush on a steep slope above Pioneer Trail.

UPDATE 11AM 8/15: The Shooting Fire is now 80 percent contained and remains non-threatening to structures with a total of 252 acres burned, SFIDC spokeswoman Shannon Brophy said.

UPDATE 8PM: The Shooting Fire is 40 percent contained with eyes on all fire lines from multiple fire agencies, said Carson City Fire Department spokeswoman Stacey Belt. Mapping has the fire size to be between 200 to 300 acres, she said. Several fire crews will remain on scene to close the containment gap.

Marijuana Brownie Incident - During the last weekend of July, a group of women visited South Lake Tahoe for a bachelorette party. During the visit, the women willfully ingested marijuana brownies they obtained through a ride-share company. Within a few hours, 10 of the women were taken to the emergency room in South Lake Tahoe. Eight of the ten were later admitted to the hospital for treatment. While many would have you believe marijuana is a harmless drug, those of us in the public safety arena have seen increases in medical emergencies from marijuana ingestion.

Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless (TCH) would like to thank the many volunteers who participated in our litter pick up day around the 981 Silver Dollar neighborhood on July 9. We also appreciate Clean Tahoe for contributing supplies.

Participants included Chara Fugii, Norine Hegy, Jenn Lay and Jill Parmele. We appreciate their help in being good neighbors and keeping the area free of trash.

The Evans Family Garden received a makeover on July 1 when members of the California Conservation Corps/Tahoe Center joined representatives of the South Tahoe Public District, Tahoe Resources Conservation District, and members of the Evans family at the site on Mt. Olympia Circle.

The groups weeded, did path rehabilitation, sheet mulching and re-planting.

3:46 p.m. - Vague Threats - Al Tahoe Blvd - A 33-YEAR-OLD MALE INMATE ACCUSED ANOTHER INMATE, AGE 18, OF MAKING THREATS.

The 11th annual Lake Tahoe Bike Challenge was officially kicked off with a ceremony at Lakeview Commons Wednesday afternoon. A small crowd gathered for what was the second kick-off party which culminated in a group bike ride.

Proclamations were read by both El Dorado County Supervisor Sue Novasel and South Lake Tahoe Mayor Pro Tem Austin Sass, both celebrating alternative modes of transportation on the South Shore.

The Clean Tahoe program is organizing the first Spring Clean day in South Lake Tahoe, something they hope will become an annual event in all local neighborhoods.
All community members are welcome to participate at various locations throughout the South Shore on Saturday, May 21 from 9:00 a.m. to noon.

Cleanup supplies will be provided as well as a free lunch for all volunteers at Lakeview Commons at El Dorado Beach afterward.

Join other South Lake Tahoe residents on Thursday, May 12, 2016 at 6:00 p.m. at the South Lake Tahoe Community College and learn how to keep your home and neighborhood safer in the event of a wildfire.

Firefighters and community safety personnel need the public to help protect their neighborhoods from catastrophic wildfire. They are holding the two-hour long seminar as a new effort to help those living in Lake Tahoe in protecting their homes.

The Tahoe Bike Challenge runs from June 1 to June 14 in South Lake Tahoe. This is a time the community celebrates getting out of their cars and using a bike to get to work, play and school.

Thousands of miles were logged during the last Tahoe Bike Challenge by school kids, city and county workers, employees at local agencies and your neighbors as they ran errands, got to work, and enjoyed free time.

12:50 p.m. - Petty Theft - Black Bart Ave - R/P REPORTED A PETTY THEFT REPORT FROM HER VEHICLE.

A fire destroyed a home in the Bijou neighborhood of South Lake Tahoe on Thursday night, killing three dogs and leaving the two residents without a home which was declared a complete loss.

At 8:22 p.m. April 21, 2016, engines from all area agencies responded to the two-story cabin at 3801 Aspen Avenue after receiving a 911 call of flames coming from inside. South Lake Tahoe, Tahoe Douglas and Lake Valley Fire Departments were all called to the scene. They found the home engulfed and items from the interior exploding.

The Sheriff’s Team of Active Retirees (S.T.A.R.) Program in El Dorado County is looking to bolster their volunteer corps. STAR is comprised of senior citizens who are utilized to enhance vital crime prevention services in the community. The STARs conduct patrols in specially marked STAR vehicles, functioning as the eyes and ears of the Sheriff’s Department, reporting any suspicious activity observed. The S.T.A.R. Program is a Crime Prevention Program exercising proactive law enforcement principles.

Even though construction won't start until 2019, a major step forward to the completion of the South Tahoe Greenway Shared-Use Trail Project occurred Thursday when the California Tahoe Conservancy approved the updated project and authorized an additional $200,000 in funding.

2:45 p.m. 2/28/16 update:

Two different high speed chases through the Carson Valley and up Kingsbury Grade resulted in the arrest of two men and two women on Saturday, February 27, 2017.

At 3:10 p.m., a trooper from the Nevada Highway Patrol spotted a silver Mercedes-Benz with California plates going down U.S. 50 (Spooner Summit) at 85 mph. The driver failed to pull over for the trooper, instead turning South on Highway 395 towards Minden, Nev., at speeds in excess of 100 mph.

Winter has been welcomed back to the Lake Tahoe basin after a few years of drought and less-than-average snowfall, but a resurgence of winter brings with it not only more visitors to enjoy the snow, but poor traveling conditions for the driver.
