Lake Tahoe Community College Offers a Learn Spanish Abroad Program

Lake Tahoe Community College is offering interested students an opportunity to learn Spanish in Guatemala this coming summer. The program is open to anyone who is at least 18 years of age, and participants do not have to be current LTCC students. All levels of Spanish language learners are welcome to experience the program.

Soccer Coaches Hired for Lake Tahoe Community College

Benjamin Wade and Christian DeLeon were hired as the new LTCC soccer coaches at Tuesday night's Lake Tahoe Community College Board meeting. Both coaches will head up the newly established intercollegiate soccer program at the college. Wade will be the men's head coach and DeLeon the women's.

South Lake Tahoe in the Running For "America's Best Ski Destination"

Voters chose Lake Tahoe as "America's Best Lake" in 2012 and the local area is now up for another top honor as "America's Best Ski Destination."

The Lake Tahoe Visitor's Authority is seeking votes from the local community through the month until the contest's end on December 30 at 8:50 pm PST. Online votes can be made daily on the voting site. North Lake Tahoe is also in the running along with Sun Valley, Idaho and other big resorts.

Online BMP Designer Tool Now Available for Lake Tahoe Homeowners

Lake Tahoe property owners and contractors can now design their own residential BMPs (Best Management Practices) with a free online tool provided by the TRPA.

BMP Designer is a GIS based tool found on the agency's Stormwater Management Program's website.

In order to utilize the BMP Designer, users should have knowledge of their property’s physical characteristics including:

• The direction water flows on the property
• Where utilities are located (always call 811 prior to digging)

End of Lake Tahoe Grading Season is October 15

October 15th marks the end of the grading and digging season at Lake Tahoe and the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) is sending an early reminder that permitted projects can only continue past that date if a special exception has been issued by the Agency. The exceptions are generally granted for reasons of public health and safety, emergencies or threats to the Lake’s water quality.

6th Annual SuperFam Comes to South Lake Tahoe

Visit California’s annual “California SuperFAM,” in conjunction with British Airways, returns to the Golden State, October 10-17, 2013 for the sixth consecutive year. The 1st Annual “Tahoe’s Freakin’ Fun Run” will be held this Sunday, October 13th at Lake Tahoe Community College Playfields located at 1300 Al Tahoe Blvd. The Fun Run will begin at 10am and participants are encouraged to dress in Halloween attire with prizes for Best Costume and Most Ridiculous Costume being awarded.

Tahoe Boat Inspections Move Back to Launch Ramps for Fall & Winter

On October 1, boat inspections will move to select launch ramps and winter hours will begin. Tahoe RCD (Resource Conservation District) inspectors will be stationed at Cave Rock and Lake Forest boat launches from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. seven days a week, weather permitting. Boats with attached Lake Tahoe wire inspection seals and valid Tahoe inspection stickers will be permitted to launch during these times, but any unsealed boats are required to get an inspection during daylight hours.

The Lake Tahoe Outreach Committee is concluding a survey to discover what the public thinks are the most important actions people can take to help protect the Lake Tahoe region. The series features famed violinist Elizabeth Pitcairn performing Beethoven’s Concerto for Violin in D major Op.61 on the legendary Red Stradivarius Violin. The concert will conclude with Mozart’s symphonic choral masterpiece, Requiem, featuring vocal soloists and the Tahoe Symphony Chorus.

Scholarship programs a big success at Lake Tahoe Community College

The numbers are in: Lake Tahoe Community College’s scholarship program had its most successful year ever in 2012/13, helping more students to reach their academic goals than ever before. In June 2013, the college handed out $81,000 in scholarship dollars: the most in the college’s history.

All of those dollars will help 66 LTCC students to continue their education, providing much-needed funds to cover the costs of tuition, textbooks, and other resources necessary to academic success.

Tahoe Hockey Partners, LLC Brings WSHL Junior Hockey Team to South Lake Tahoe

Tahoe Hockey Partners, LLC announced today that newly formed Lake Tahoe Blue will play their inaugural Junior A hockey season at the South Lake Tahoe Ice Arena as part of the Pacific Division of the Western Conference of the Western States Hockey League (WSHL). League preseason games start September 20 and the regular season starts October 4.

Their research is making a tangible contribution to the decisions, policies and practices that guide the basin’s environmental health.

South Lake Tahoe police seek possible witness to USA Gas Station murder case

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department is seeking the public’s help in identifying an individual who may have information regarding a homicide at the USA Gas station on Aug. 6.

Manpreet Ghuman Singh, 27, of South Lake Tahoe was killed after sustaining a single bullet wound to his upper torso. It does not appear that any robbery was involved in this crime.

Local poet, LTCC faculty member Janet Smith wins national award

South Lake Tahoe poet and LTCC English faculty Janet Smith has won the 2013 Guy Owen Prize for her poem “The Children’s Section.” The poem, for which Smith received $1000, will appear in the fall issue of the “Southern Poetry Review.”

Poet Arthur Smith chose the poem from a short list of finalists.

“The subject matter, the reading experience in childhood, could have been easily sentimentalized, but the poet consistently pulls back from that with an even more powerful detail which sees into the heart of the creation of the imagination,” he said.

The City of South Lake Tahoe Recreation Department is proud to partner with the Tahoe Tri Club and is hosting a Kids Triathlon this Sunday, June 30 at the South Lake Tahoe Recreation Complex at 3 p.m. Registration for the event is $35.

The Tahoe Kids Triathlon is a super fun and super spectator friendly triathlon (series) for kids ages 3-13. The triathlon course includes the Recreation Complex Swimming Pool, Parking Lot, and Greenway that surrounds the Campground. A post-race party, BBQ and yearly age-group awards will follow the triathlon.

Agencies launch 'Eyes on the Lake' volunteer program to identify aquatic invasive plants

Forest Service to hold informational meeting on Upper Truckee project
