Cram-A-Cruiser event for Bread & Broth 4 Kids a huge success

A local group has expanded to help accommodate the hundreds of food insecure school aged children in South Lake Tahoe. Many in the community are already familiar with Bread & Broth, a group of volunteers that serves hot food to those in need on Mondays and emergency bags of food.

In 2012, Page and Sage was started in order to address the growing problem of hungry children in South Lake Tahoe with the help of Tahoe Douglas Rotary Club. With over 2,000 students qualifying for free or reduced breakfasts and lunches in the community, the need for extra food in homes was apparent then, just as it is now.

Kudos: Liberty Utilities employees give back during the holidays

You may recall that a month ago employees from Liberty Utilities donated cash and boxes and cans of food for the South Lake Tahoe backpack food program, Page and Sage. This generous donation allows the group to continue to feed the kids in need in our community.

Page & Sage has been serving students in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District for three years, giving children in need a backpack of food and a book to take home over the weekends when they don't receive free lunches and breakfasts at school.

When Liberty Utilities in South Lake Tahoe found out about the program they began a food and donation drive in order to help fill the program's shelves. They gathered boxes and cans of food and almost $300 in cash.

The goal is simple, "Helping the youth of South Lake Tahoe to be well read and well fed."

Hunger isn't just an inner city problem. Hunger isn't just a third world problem. Hunger affects approximately 16 million children in the United States with 3 million rural community households being "food insecure."

How can children focus on solving a math problem or writing an English paper when he or she is trying to ignore the persistent pangs of hunger? School work is forced to compete with hunger.
