Lake Tahoe cyclists look to break world record today

Today is the day: South Lake Tahoe bicycle group Slow Rollers is asking the community to come out to its second annual Spirit Bike Parade today and an attempt to break the Guinness Book of World Records by forming the longest single line of bicycles. To beat the record, now held by the city of Davis of 916 bicycles, South Lake Tahoe will have to produce 917 bicycles or more. The event begins at 4 p.m. with a start up at the old Miller's Outpost, South Shore Bikes, 955 Emerald Bay Road. Get there early to register.

Sparks Fly at Nevada Republican Party Convention

Heated questions about the presence of guests and whether they were voting. An angry motion to remove the convention chairman. And that was just for starters.
More than 1,600 county delegates gathered Saturday at the Nevada Republican Party convention in Sparks in a meeting that fluctuated between contentiousness and relative calm as the hours rolled on.

North Lake Tahoe is sending the indigenous artwork off with great fanfare at the next North Lake Tahoe Chamber/CVB/Resort Association Mixer Thursday, April 19.
The mixer, held seven years to the day after these remarkable baskets first came to Tahoe City, will be hosted at the Gatekeeper’s Museum, 5-7 p.m., 130 West Lake Boulevard in Tahoe City, California, which is located near Fanny Bridge.

OK, so it hasn't been the best snowsport season so far, but hold on, more snow is coming with storms over this weekend and we'll be able to ski off-piste without worrying about slightly hidden rock and logs. And on top of that, it's spring skiing, always the best of the year. Forget those crowds of December and January, don't recall those icy January days when the wind howled. It's spring skiing, lightly clad with plenty of sun for sitting on the lodge deck.

Over 90 candidates filed for a variety of offices in Clark County.

El Dorado authorities arrest Cameron Park man after woman found dead

Todd Alan Winkler, 45, was arrested Monday night and is being held in El Dorado County Jail without bond for reasons related to the homicide, said Lt. Bryan Golmitz.

Nevada's longest serving senator, retired senator Bill Raggio has died. He was 85. Raggio died at 10 p.m. Thursday night while vacationing in Sydney, Australia. The cause was reported as death due to respritory illness. The death was first reported by Face-to-Face host Jon Ralston.

The caucus at the Carson City Middle School was one of 118 held around Nevada today as the state Democrat Party gears up for the 2012 election.
Unlike 2008, when the Democrat nominee was still undecided at the time of the caucus, the nonbinding ballot had two options: the president or uncommitted. Obama was getting strong support among participants.

Ski resorts report up to 2 feet of snow from the system which arrived Friday and continues today. The National Weather Service in Reno reports that a second and much colder storm will move into the area on Sunday into Monday, dropping temperatures and bringing more snow. If you tuned into your pre-set Capital Public Radio station Tuesday night expecting to hear "Excellence in Jazz" you may have wondered where it went. Don't worry, it didn't go away, it's now on a new station.
Effective Tuesday Capital Public radio moved "Excellence In Jazz" and several other of its music programs from KXJZ 90.9/KUOP 91.3/KKTO 90.5/KQNC 88.1 over to its music station at 88.9 KXPR/ 91.7 KXSR, and 88.7 KXJS.

Amodei Says He Rejects Congressional Earmarks

CARSON CITY — Rep. Mark Amodei, R-Nev., said today he opposes the earmark process used to fund various projects around the country, advocating instead that state priorities for federal support go through a regular budget review.
“The problem with earmarks, when you look at them, it’s symbolic largely, because it’s not that it’s a huge part of the federal budget,” he said. “But a lot of them appear at the end with absolutely no hearings and they are in bills.
