California Tahoe Conservancy awards over $340,000 to Washoe Tribe to restore Meeks Meadow

The California Tahoe Conservancy Board has awarded a $380,454 grant to the Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California for the Máyala Wáta Restoration Project at Meeks Meadow, and area rich in cultural and ecological importance.

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - At its last meeting, the California Tahoe Conservancy (CTC) authorized $912,000 for grants to advance climate change adaptation and improve community sustainability in the Lake Tahoe Basin.
The Conservancy Board approved three climate adaptation grants, all funded by Proposition 68:
Trees vandalized at popular South Lake Tahoe lakefront park

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Nine pine trees have been vandalized at Regan Beach in South Lake Tahoe in what appears to be an attempt to cut them down. Each tree has a wide swath of chopping action across it with boring holes at the base.
The City of South Lake Tahoe Parks Department was notified of the damage on Saturday, November 9 and a police report was generated. Staff is calling the destruction "a wanton act of vandalism and abuse of public trust."
The Jeffrey Pines are estimated to be about 20-years-old.

As the tents are taken down, the stage removed and all other components of SnowGlobe disappear for another year, an evaluation of the Community Play Field and other aspects of the seventh annual event in South Lake Tahoe are being made. There may be negatives to the popular event that draws in 20,000 people a day, there are also many positives to be celebrated.
There is more to the three-day festival, SnowGlobe, than music and crowds, a side of the event many aren't aware of.
South Lake Tahoe councilwoman to chair conservancy board

During their meeting Thursday, the California Tahoe Conservancy Board elected South Lake Tahoe City Councilwoman Brooke Laine as their chair. She is the City’s appointee to the Board and will be replacing longtime Chair Larry Sevison.
The Board also elected Lynn Suter as Vice Chair, filling a post vacated by former Conservancy Board Member John Hooper earlier this year.
Pine Nut Harvest 2017: Season begins on Nevada public lands

The 2017 pine nut harvest season kicks off on lands managed by the Nevada Bureau of Land Management and Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. Both agencies are working together to ensure the public is safely harvesting pine nuts and aware of the regulations.
The length of the pine nut harvest season varies depending on crop quality and seasonal weather conditions. It is generally September to late October when pine nuts are available for harvest.
Dr. Murillo to be offered Southwestern College superintendent/president job

Dr. Kindred Murillo, superintendent/president of the Lake Tahoe Community College District (LTCC), was selected by the Southwestern Community College District Board of Trustees as their finalist for school's new superintendent/president. The Trustees voted for Murillo at a special meeting Monday and they anticipate taking final action to appoint her and approve a contract at their December 14 meeting.

Dr. Kindred Murillo, Superintendent/President of Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC), is a finalist for the same position at Southwestern College (SWC) in Chula Vista.
Murillo and the two other finalists were in Southern California this week to meet with students, faculty and administrators at a public forum on Wednesday. On Monday, December 5, they will have a final interview before the college's governing board.

Dr. Kindred Murillo was one of the top three finalists for Chancellor of the Contra Costa Community College District (CCCCD), but during a special meeting on Friday, that job was given to the chancellor of University of Minnesota Crookston.
'I was honored to be a finalist, and I wish Dr. Fred Wood the very best," Murillo told South Tahoe Now.

Donut and frozen yogurt shop opening in South Lake Tahoe

Get ready for some sunshine and happiness at the "Y" area of South Lake Tahoe. Rainbow Sprinkles Donuts and Frozen Yogurt is coming this summer, and locals and visitors alike are in for a treat.
Jody Filgo and Sallie Ross-Filgo have been planning their dream for a long time, and now they have the space to do it, the old donut shop next to Raley's.
They got the keys on Tuesday and popped the sign up in the window, letting people know what is coming.

The Lake Tahoe Community College Board of Trustees is meeting in closed session tonight to discuss the search for the school's next president following the announcement that Superintendent/President Dr. Kindred Murillo will be leaving her post.
Murillo, who started at the college in July, 2011, requested the Board meet and discuss an exit date for her which would take place sometime in the next 18 months.
During the January 19 meeting, the Board will also discuss a timeline for the process of finding Murillo's replacement.

The recent reversal of sign ordinance fees reflects on the poor leadership of South Lake Tahoe’s government. After an eruption of dissent from the business community, the City had to reverse its onerous sign permit fees and acquiesce to the demands of the business community.
USFS returning Seneca Pond to wetland

A garter snake skimmed the surface of what little water remained in Seneca Pond. Birds were flying about as the trees were falling down, and grasses and plants were being pulled out and stored.
This was the scene of the U.S. Forest Service's project to return Seneca Pond to a wetland.
Pine pollen making annual presence known

If you've been in Lake Tahoe this week you know that it is pine pollen season. The light winds have even made the annual spreading of the yellow powder even more evident, that is, if the sneezing and pollen covered cars weren't enough of a clue.
As a long time resident of South Lake Tahoe I just take the arrival of pollen as I do the changing of the seasons, but I thought a little research would help us understand causes, and cures, a bit more.
Hike 500 Miles in One Season

The Sugar Pine Foundation of Lake Tahoe has asked Santa for a $5,000 gift this year. That is the amount needed to plant and restore sugar pines in recent California wildfires.
The giant Pinus lambertiana (sugar pine trees) are shown uphill from these firefighters in the photo.
Sugar pines are the world's largest species of pine with the longest cones - and they are dying from white pine blister rust, a non-native, invasive fungus. Though they historically accounted for 25% of Lake Tahoe's forests, sugar pines now make up less than 5% of the forest composition.

Olympian Jamie Anderson hosts fundraiser for the Sugar Pine Foundation

South Lake Tahoe's Golden Girl Jamie Anderson is throwing a party in her hometown to help raise money for the sugar pine trees.
On Thursday, November 6, Jamie in presenting "Golden Experience" at Azul Latin Kitchen in the Heavenly Village from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. She will talk about her trip to Socchi, Russia and the winning of a gold medal.
The Sugar Pine Foundation will be auctioning off some snowboard gear signed by Jamie, Vail lift tickets and winter themed art.
Tickets $20 per person include a poster of Jamie snowboarding. Kids are free.

Needleminers Attacking Jeffrey Pines on Pioneer Trail

If you've noticed that the Jeffrey Pines near the intersection of Highway 50 and Pioneer appear to be dying, you may rest assured there is no immediate cause for concern.
The yellowing of the pine needles is caused by the needleminer, a native insect species that feeds on the needs of pine trees.

Can you survive the next wildfire in Lake Tahoe? Yes, if your community is prepared.
The Lake Tahoe Basin's firefighting agencies and UNR Cooperative Education have come together to promote the "Fire Adapted Community Concept." This type of community has five elements:
1. Community Protection - Well-designed fuelbreaks and safe areas protect the community.
2. Defensible Space - Proper management of vegetation surrounding the home reduces the wildfire threat.
3. Access - Good access helps emergency responders arrive in a timely manner.

Sugar Pine Foundation Has Busy Planting Season Ahead

The Sugar Pine Foundation's goal is to save the Sugar Pine and White Pine trees from blister rust in Lake Tahoe by educating and and involving the community in hands-on forest stewardship.
The group has several opportunities this fall to help save the trees by planting seedling in areas around the lake. 850 seedlings have already been planted this fall and more will be planted at the following events:

The plane was observed by numerous witnesses begin to lose altitude after take off, and bank sharply into a wooded area east of the airport. The plane crashed into some large pine trees and flipped over.
The male pilot, Steven Lefton 67 years of age of Palo Alto, CA was killed on impact. His wife, Karen Lefton sustained moderate injuries and was pinned in the wreckage of the plane.
