Donut and frozen yogurt shop opening in South Lake Tahoe

Get ready for some sunshine and happiness at the "Y" area of South Lake Tahoe. Rainbow Sprinkles Donuts and Frozen Yogurt is coming this summer, and locals and visitors alike are in for a treat.

Jody Filgo and Sallie Ross-Filgo have been planning their dream for a long time, and now they have the space to do it, the old donut shop next to Raley's.

They got the keys on Tuesday and popped the sign up in the window, letting people know what is coming.

This isn't going to be an ordinary donut shop by any means. Rainbow Sprinkles will have donuts in the shape of Lake Tahoe, pine trees, coyotes, fire trucks and hydrants and many other shapes. If you've ever been to Voodoo Donuts in Oregon, you're in for a Tahoe version of the popular gourmet donut shop, complete with maple and bacon donuts, donuts stacked with cereal and other fun toppings, and of course, donuts with sprinkles. During the holidays there will be seasonal flavors and themed donuts.

Everything is gone from the old place, and the girls have been shopping for display cabinets, machines, new flooring and decor. They start demolition next week to remove the old tile flooring, and then cleaning and painting will begin before they can add anything. The whole theme of the shop will be Tahoe and rainbows.

Jody and Sallie have some very unique ideas planned that are sure to make Rainbow Sprinkles a local favorite. Anyone in a uniform (including boy and girl scouts) will always get 50 percent off, good grades in elementary school will earn kids free donuts, as will a "win" by the sports team they will be sponsoring. They've already lined up fishing charters, gas stations and coffee shops to carry their donuts.

Rainbow Sprinkles will even be delivering to local office workers and businesses!

Jody has planned a whole corner of the new shop to be for "seniors only." She has gained a following being the head cook at the South Lake Tahoe Senior Center for the last 21 1/2 years. While her meatloaf is famous, her friendships with all of the seniors over the years has them already waiting for Rainbow Sprinkles to open. Her last day at the center is June 3, then it will be full steam ahead until the planned opening at the end of July. Sallie is the SLT Fire Chief Jeff Meston's Administrative Assistant.

"The seniors have supported me all of these years," said Jody of the reasons behind her plans for the three senior tables.

Prior to opening they will be giving out complimentary samples throughout the community, so keep an eye on their facebook page (coming) and website (www.tahoerainbowsprinkles.com) to see how to get them.

"We'll be focused on the locals and community as well as the tourists," Jody and Sallie.

On the frozen yogurt side of things, the shop will carry eight flavors, one of which is sugar-free and another that is a "flavor of the month." There will be 25-30 fresh toppings including organic fruits, Mochi bites and boba balls. No soda will be sold, but they'll carry milk, coffee, tea, juice and water.

During the winter, Jody plans to make to-go servings of soups and chili.

When opened, Rainbow Sprinkles will be open from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. every day except Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
