Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care releases Golden Eagle over Red Lake
Submitted by paula on Sun, 09/25/2016 - 6:26pmThere were tears, smiles and applause as a Golden Eagle was released Sunday over Red Lake after being rehabilitated by Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care for the past month.
"Loyalton" was found by a Fish and Wildlife warden near the town of Loyalton with no real injuries, but was emaciated. LTWC volunteers call Loyalton a "he" but they don't really know as they don't test the sex on their eagles.
Lake Tahoe 'discovered' by John C. Fremont on Valentine's Day, 1844
Submitted by paula on Sat, 02/13/2016 - 10:43pmIt was 174 years ago, on Valentine's Day in 1844, when John C. Frémont and Charles Preuss “discovered” Lake Tahoe as they were making the first crossing across the Sierra Nevada in winter. The pair had been hired by Congress to explore the Colombia River region to the Pacific Ocean with famous scouts Kit Carson and Thomas Fitzpatrick.

What to do in Lake Tahoe When There Isn't Much Snow? Enjoy a Day on the Lake!

The calm water and mild days have been perfect for fishing, whether its boat fishing on Lake Tahoe or ice fishing on the frozen lakes in the area.
I ran into a group of fisherman just ending their venture onto the lake with Tahoe Sport Fishing on Tuesday. The group of men were from Australia, South Africa, Los Angeles and Sacramento and by the looks of their smiles and their catch, they had a great time.

Outdoors with Don Q: Sept. 7 is California's Free Fishing Day
Submitted by Editor on Sat, 08/24/2013 - 4:36amThe second Free Fishing Day in 2013 in California will be Saturday, Sept. 7. The first was way back on Saturday, July 6.
On Sept. 7 you will be able to fish wherever you like without the need for a fishing license. However remember that you will need to abide by the rules and regulations that govern whatever water(s) you will be fishing.
Be sure to obey those rules and regulations, and don’t do something illegal. If you do, and if you get caught, it could be a very expensive experience.

Outdoors with Don Q: Things you need to know about ice fishing
Submitted by Editor on Wed, 01/30/2013 - 8:51pmWith the bitter January cold weather in the Sierra and above Lake Tahoe behind us, we do have plenty of water frozen on our creeks, streams, rivers, ponds, lakes and reservoirs. And that ice covering provides an excellent opportunity to catch fish.
Ice fishing is a unique sport that requires a whole different set of fishing techniques, gear and clothing, as opposed to lazy fishing on a warm, drowsy day in the middle of the summer. So, if you’ve never tried fishing through the ice, here’s some information that should be more than enough to get you “hooked” on this winter sport:

Outdoors with Don Q: Head to the Sierra for fun, fish and to stay cool
Submitted by Editor on Thu, 08/09/2012 - 5:36amIt’s that time of the year again. This is my annual reminder that if you’re someone like me, summer’s sweltering heat is not much fun. I do not like the summer months.
I am an outdoors person who dearly loves the cold, frost, ice and snow of winter, and I absolutely and totally wilt at this time of the year.
I am miserable and grouchy during hot weather months, especially August.
To be honest, I dislike the weather anytime it gets past 80-85 degrees.
