Camp Richardson’s Snowshoe Cocktail Races start on January 17

The start of Camp Richardson’s Snowshoe Cocktail Races, a three-part series, is set for Jan. 17, at 7 p.m.

Racers, cocktail trays in hand, navigate through obstacles, and up and down the beach. The winner is the fastest and cleanest at the finish.

NHP update on Incline Village New Year's Day fatal crash

Hug Soto-Barrios has been identified as the victim in the New Year's Day fatal accident on the Mt. Rose Hwy in Incline Village, NV. The 40-year old was a passenger in a 1998 Isuzu Rodeo driven by 34-year old Manuel Mejia-Verduzco.

Heavenly able to open Olympic Express; 18 lifts now open

Heavenly Mountain Resort opened Olympic Express on Friday, giving skiers and boarders access to upper Olympic Downhill run. The resort is currently operating 18 lifts, accessing 25 trails, and has three access points, including the Heavenly Gondola at Heavenly Village, Stagecoach Lodge in Nevada, and California Lodge off of Ski Run Blvd.

Fire operations continue in the Lake Tahoe Basin

The Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District and the U.S. Forest Service will continue prescribed fire operations this week on Kingsbury Grade near Buchanan Road, Ski Run Boulevard near Heavenly, Luther Pass and Spooner Summit.

Operations will last through the next several weeks as conditions allow.

Tahoe Queen hits high winds on NYE trip; Not stuck on sand

Heavenly receives 11" to 14" of snow; California Base to open

Heavenly Mountain Resort received 11-14” of new snow in the last 24 hours, allowing the resort to expand terrain and open the California side of the mountain on New Year’s Eve, Wednesday, December 31.

Heavenly will now offer three access points to the mountain, including the Heavenly Gondola at Heavenly Village, Stagecoach Lodge in Nevada, and California Lodge off of Ski Run Blvd. With the extra two mountain access points now open, the heavy crowds that have been at the Gondola all week should dissipate.

November casino gaming figures released: South Lake Tahoe casinos lose

Casinos in South Lake Tahoe won $12,104,211 in November, which is down over 30% from last year when the gaming win was $17,381,413. This ends a three month run of gains in this figure.

The casino gaming win reflects represents the computed income of casinos before business expenses and taxes.

Statewide, the figures were almost equal to last year with a gaming win of $876,278,690,a .04% gain over November of 2014.

Casinos in North Las Vegas led the state with a 37.62% gain while South Lake Tahoe's gambling venues had the biggest loss.

North Lake Tahoe's Travis Ganong Claims Career First Win

Travis Ganong, of Squaw Valley, CA and 2014 Olympian, took advantage of a new course for the men's Audi FIS Ski World Cup tour and punched through for his career first victory, winning the Santa Caterina downhill. Austria's Matthias Mayer was the only one who got close to Ganong, finishing in second, nine-hundredths back. Italy's Dominick Paris was third.

Armed Robbery at South Lake Tahoe's KFC

South Lake Tahoe Police officers responded to a call of an armed robbery at the Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) restaurant on Lake Tahoe Blvd in South Lake Tahoe Monday night.

At about 11:30 p.m., officers arrived in response to the armed robbery which had just occurred. When they arrived the suspect, described as 5'8" and 130 pounds, had already fled.

Autopsy released on teen killed in South Lake Tahoe

When Dejon Smith left home after school on December 11, like any teen facing a snow day the following day, he told his parents he was headed out for the evening. He did not tell them where he was going or with whom he would be.

Tahoe Youth & Family Services holds annual Night of Giving Thursday

Tahoe Youth & Family Services is hosting their fifth annual Night of Giving 4:30-6:30 p.m. Dec. 18 at their South Lake Tahoe office at 1021 Fremont Avenue.

The night is used as an opportunity for the community to learn about what TYFS does and to help them out both financially and with items needed by the homeless youth they serve.

There will be light refreshments.

City of South Lake Tahoe starts community action teams to help in disasters

The South Lake Tahoe Fire Department is looking for locals who'd like to help out during the time of large scale emergencies from winds, heavy snow, flooding, wildfire and avalanches.

STAT has been formed and that stands for South Tahoe Action Teams.

Teams of citizens will be given eight hours of training so they can help out when local resources are overwhelmed. After training they will be incorporated in the field with the SLTFD and other first responders during times of crisis.

This is the first program of its kind in the Tahoe Basin.

The Heavenly Ski and Snowboard Foundation (HSSF) is holding their annual Santa Run on Sunday, December 21 at 4:00 p.m., rain or snow. They will be raising funds for the HSSF Scholarship Fund wil the help of Himmel Haus, Blue Angel Cafe and Rainbow Mountain.

3rd Annual Holiday Parade made its way through town

Everything from decorated cars full of STHS Cheerleaders to a tow truck and dump truck decked out in holiday cheer were part of the Third Annual Holiday Parade in South Lake Tahoe.

31 entries made up the parade which started at the top of Ski Run Blvd and went through town, ending in the parking lot of TJ Maxx.

"This was a really fun even for the whole community," said JoAnn Conner, organizer of the event (and City Councilwoman). "This parade raised a lot of money for Christmas Cheer as well as bringing in a lot of toys. Thank you to everyone who made all of this a success."

Jamie Anderson starts off 2014 season with a Dew Tour win

Jamie Anderson just can’t be beat, even with some bruised ribs from a nasty fall during practice on Tuesday. The Sochi Olympic slopestyle gold medalist battled through the pain and rose to the occasion this afternoon, locking down her first slopestyle win of the season and fifth overall win in the Dew Tour series.

Heavenly Mountain Resort closed on Saturday; Concert still on

Heavenly Mountain Resort in South Lake Tahoe will be closed on Saturday, December 13. The ski area is still experiencing problems from Thursday's high winds and power outages.

A tree fell on Dipper Express overnight and the mountain had still been experiencing power outages during the day on Friday.

Tips for being prepared during Lake Tahoe's winter storms

Liberty Utilities is reminding customers to always be prepared for winter storms and possible power outages that may result from them.

“Although we’ve made significant progress in reducing electrical outages since acquiring the utility nearly four years ago, the reality is that a really big winter storm can impact our ability to keep the lights on,” according to Mike Smart, President of Liberty Utilities-California.

With the approaching winter storm, Liberty offers the following outage preparation tips:

Jingle Jog Holiday Fun Run to be held in South Lake Tahoe

The Jingle Jog Fun Run is a great opportunity dress up in your wackiest holiday gear, the perfect attire to partake in a holiday run!

The 5k and Kid's Fun Run will be held on Saturday, December 13th at 10 a.m. at Lake Tahoe Community College with prizes awarded for best race times.

Registration begins at 9am and races will begin at 10 a.m.

Registration for the Kids Fun Run is $10.00 and the 5K is $29.00. Proceeds benefit Youth Activity Scholarships though Athletes United.

Taylor Swift's Flaming Rose act created by Lake Tahoe magician

By now you may have seen or heard about pop star Taylor Swift's ground breaking performance at the American Music Awards (AMAs) on November 23. During the production of her hit, Blank Space, Swift is carrying a rose that is set on fire by a petal she pulls off. Her hand appears to catch on fire as well.

And it's all because of Alex Ramon, the 29-year-old part time South Lake Tahoe resident and star of Illusion Fusion during its two year local run.

Public coming up with ideas on the Loop Road/Hwy 50 Revitalization Project

During last week's Loop Road open house, residents and businesspeople gave their input on what they felt the US Highway 50/South Shore Community Revitalization project should offer.

Results show that 82% of the people participating believe the most important goal is to beautify the corridor and create gathering spaces for locals and visitors.

Another 67% of the respondents believe there should be efforts to reduce traffic congestion and improve mobility options, 60% said the project should revitalize the area and boost economic development.

Finishing touches are being put on the new Cold Water Brewery & Grill as General Manager Debbie Brown prepares to open this weekend.

Months have been spent remodeling the former Swiss Chalet Restaurant, installing beer brewing equipment, brewing beer, developing a menu and creating a new South Lake Tahoe experience.

Family Friendly: A trip to a Reno Bighorns game

I had always planned to drive off the hill to watch a Reno Bighorns game, but I never found the opportunity. That is, until this weekend. It's hard to believe they've been in Reno since 2008!

My son Chris won tickets by answering a Bighorn trivia game on a Reno radio station, so my daughter Abby and I drove down Friday night to join him and watch the season opener against the Iowa Energy.

Olympians to participate in Heavenly Valley's High Roller Hold'Em this spring

Three Olympic athletes from the inaugural USA slopestyle snowboarding team will arrive in South Lake Tahoe this spring to compete in Heavenly Mountain Resort’s signature event, High Roller Hold ‘Em, on Saturday, April 4, 2015. Turkey Trot Fun Run in South Lake Tahoe

South Tahoe High's Cross Country teams at Nevada State Championships

The South Tahoe High Cross Country team is in Clark County this weekend for the Nevada High School Cross Country Championships. The boys will compete on Saturday at 1:20 p.m. and the girls run at 10:45 a.m.

South Tahoe's Dillon Lemmons led the Viking runners during the regional championship on Halloween with an 8th place finish. Teammates Orion Maxwell (12th), Paul Mutz (16th), Mario Mangiaracina (17th), George Freeman (26th), Paul Hoefer (35th), David Holmes (39th) and joined Lemmons to give South Tahoe a third place finish with an average time of 18:49.

November is National Runaway Prevention Month

What are the first thoughts that go through your mind when you see a youth on the streets? How did they get there, where are their parents, and are they safe? It’s disturbing to realize that between 1.6 and 2.8 million youth run away annually. Most youth who run away do so because of threatening environments at home, such as physical/verbal abuse, substance abuse issues, questions of sexual orientation, or escaping state care. Unfortunately, by choosing to run away, they further subject themselves to threatening situations that impede their progress in life.
