South Tahoe High seniors Emily Barnett and Tyler Myers will travel to Russia to present their field research project, “The Effects of Fire and Forest Thinning on the Biodiversity of Understory Plants in the Lake Tahoe Basin,” at the 9th Annual International Junior Foresters’ Competition. Their project was selected by the U.S. Forest Service International Programs office in Washington DC to represent the U.S. in the upcoming competition.

Affordable Care Act made many preventive services no cost to Nevada beneficiaries

In Nevada, the Affordable Care Act — the new health care law — helped 101,333 people with original Medicare get at least one preventive service at no cost to them during the first six months of 2012, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced Tuesday. This is 43 percent of those eligible for these services in Nevada. This figure also includes 7,543 in Nevada who have taken advantage of the Annual Wellness Visit provided by the Affordable Care Act.

Heavenly honors Lake Tahoe area high school grads with scholarships

Heavenly Mountain Resort at Lake Tahoe honored five recipients of the Heavenly Mountain Resort Community Scholarship Program at a luncheon Wednesday at Tamarack Lodge, located at the top of the Heavenly Gondola.
For the ninth consecutive year, Heavenly Mountain Resort awarded $4,000 scholarships to five recent high school graduates, bringing the resort’s overall commitment to the Heavenly Mountain Resort Community Scholarship Program to $180,000. Scientists from the University of Nevada, Reno helped renowned environmental artists Helen Mayer Harrison and Newton Harrison create an exhibition on display at the Nevada Museum of Art in downtown Reno that predicts the potential effects of climate change on the Sierra Nevada mountains.

“The exhibition by the Harrisons helps people see how climate change may alter natural areas that many of us enjoy,” Thomas Albright, professor of geography in the University’s College of Science, said.

New route between Minden and Carson City, simplified fares greet BlueGo bus riders

A simplified fare structure will greet BlueGo passengers this weekend and a new route between Minden and Carson City begins Monday, the Tahoe Transportation District announced today.

The new fare and route structure allows BlueGo to hold the line on bus fares without major price increases on its main routes and enables the transportation system to operate in a positive and sustainable manner.
