Happy birthday Nevada: How, when and where to celebrate Nevada Day 2016 events

Nevada is one of the few states that celebrate its Admission Day, and boy do we throw a party. A parade, competitions of strength and facial hair, hot air balloons, bloody marys, a carnival, pow wow, and free chili are just a few of the festivities awaiting the capital city on Saturday.

The party begins Friday this year with a ribbon cutting celebration of the 'new' downtown. The Nevada State Museum hits its 75th Anniversary this year and will have a day full of fun and surprises. Keep reading to see where you need to take advantage of all the best this holiday weekend has to offer.

South Tahoe High Vikings battle rival Truckee Friday night

The traditional Senior Game at South Tahoe High is on Friday, October 21 when the Vikings meet their rivals, the Truckee Wolverines. Both teams are tied for second place in Northern Nevada Division 3A with a 7-1 record. The Vikings are on a six-game winning streak in their quest to take over the first place spot from Spring Creek.

The final regular season game for Varsity is at 7:00 p.m. with the Junior Varsity teams taking the field first at 4:30 p.m.

Arrive early as the tribute to the seniors will be right before the Varsity game begins.

Letter: Vote Yes on Proposition 52

This November, please vote YES on Proposition 52. Proposition 52, the Medi-Cal Funding and Accountability Act, extends the current partnership between the state and California hospitals to help fund the health care needs of 13 million children, seniors, and low-income families in California.

In the last two years, the number of Med-Cal recipients in South Lake Tahoe has doubled. El Dorado County receives $20,136,379 in federal funding each year and without this money our working families would not be able to afford health care services.

County Supervisors spend day in South Lake Tahoe

To get a look at the properties the County owns, and to get a look at services and programs going on in South Lake Tahoe, the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors (BOS) met on the South Shore last week for tours and discussions.

The County owned properties in SLT were highlighted during a morning tour. Each of the properties, the Senior Center, the Museum, the Art League building and the Visitor's Authority building, are owned by the County and maintained by the City.

Volunteer drivers needed for Senior Meal Program

The El Dorado County Senior Nutrition Program greatly needs dedicated, caring volunteers to help deliver lunchtime meals to homebound seniors. Volunteers work one day a week, delivering meals between 10:30 a.m. and noon.

An orientation session for new volunteer drivers is scheduled for Thursday, September 29 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Senior Center, 3050 South Lake Tahoe Boulevard, in the dining room.

Opening weekend for Cabaret at Lake Tahoe Community College

Area seniors get free farmer's market check booklets

County residents over the age of 60 that meet income guidelines are eligible to receive a booklet of coupons worth $20 for use at area farmer's markets this July.

The El Dorado County Area Agency on Aging has a limited supply of Senior Farmers’ Market check booklets available for qualified El Dorado County seniors. Each eligible senior will receive one booklet that includes five checks redeemable for $4 each to be used at Certified Farmers’ Markets for the purchase of fresh, unprepared, locally grown fruits, vegetables, cut herbs and raw unprocessed honey.

Donut and frozen yogurt shop opening in South Lake Tahoe

Special Mother's Day rides on the historic V & T Railroad

Mom, long stemmed roses and the Virginia & Truckee Railroad. The annual Mother’s Day weekend rides on the V&T Railroad are set for Saturday and Sunday, May 7-8. The first excursion of the season is also one of the most popular as families spend the day together celebrating mom.

This special edition diesel train ride from Carson City to the 1860s boom-era mining town of Virginia City provides mom with a long stem rose, quality time with family, animated Old West history storytelling, and shopping and dining to go along with the spectacular scenery.

STHS student's senior project shows him how to give back through sports

Seniors at South Tahoe High School must pick something to do for their senior project, a requirement of graduation, one that pushes them to do something different and unfamiliar. Some students learn to play a guitar, while others do stand up comedy. And some students like Ethan Strain, learn how to give back to their community and work with children.

The students must select an advisor for their project, someone who knows the chosen subject and can guide the student to a successful completion.

Practice kayak rolling skills at City's Rec Center pool

The City of South Lake Tahoe has opened the swimming pool at the Recreation and Swim Complex to kayakers who want to practice their rolling skills before heading out to the lake and rivers.

The controlled and calm waters of the pool are an excellent place to practice. It will be open to kayaks every Saturday through May 21 from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

There is no instruction available. Those wishing to use the facilities must bring their own kayak. Helmets and life vests are recommended.

South Tahoe High soccer stars to play for LTCC Coyotes

Four South Tahoe High seniors took a big step on Tuesday when they all signed a letter of intent to play soccer for the Lake Tahoe Community College Coyotes.

Natalie Reber, Stacy Vazquez, Alejandra Gutierrez and Kenya Maltese will all be in blue jerseys this fall as they hit the field under the direction of Coach Jeremy Evans.

"This is a big deal for my school," said Evans. "This is my first recruiting class and I can't wait to you to the next level," he told the recruits.

Educational series on caring for the aging presented by El Dorado County

A six-week educational series that will provide support for people who care for, or plan to care for, a family member of friend over the age of 60 will be presented by El Dorado County starting April 18, 2016.

The "Aging & Caregiver" series will be held on Mondays from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel, 4130 Lake Tahoe Blvd, South Lake Tahoe.

Kudos: Heavenly Ski Patrol adopts a day at Bread & Broth

Bread & Broth, a non-profit, all volunteer organization whose mission is to ease hunger in the South Tahoe Community, would like to recognize the Heavenly Ski Patrol for hosting their second “Adopt A Day of Nourishment” this year. Heavenly’s Ski Patrol organization provided the funding for the 138 meals served at B&B’s Monday evening dinner on February 29th. This Adopt A Day was a follow up to their sponsorship on January 18th.

A play you'll be dying to go to at Lake Tahoe Community College

Bodies will be dropping like flies as mystery, chaos, and laughter prevail during The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940, a Hollywood murder mystery being performed by by the Theatre Arts Department at Lake Tahoe Community College.

The play, written by John Bishop and directed by Susan Boulanger, will be at the school's Duke Theater March 11, 12, 17, 18, 19 at 7:30 p.m., with Sunday matinees on March 13 and 20 at 2 p.m.

Soroptimists honor women in the South Lake Tahoe community

In a joint celebration, the two South Lake Tahoe area Soroptimist clubs honored students and women from the South Shore for their contributions to the community.

On Thursday night, members from the Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra and Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe clubs presented their annual Violet Richardson, Live your Dream, and Ruby awards at Harrah's Tahoe.

Whittell Warriors crowned state champs after 53-48 win at Lawlor

For the second time in three years, the Whittell High School boys basketball team has won the Nevada state championship.

The win was the Warriors 25th consecutive win. They wrapped up their 2016 season with an overall record of 27-2.

On Saturday at Lawlor Event Center at the University of Nevada Reno, Whittell beat Word of Life Christian Academy out of Las Vegas, 53-48, earning them the NIAA Division IV crown.

Scholarship fund created in honor of South Lake Tahoe's Mitch Underhill

It's been almost two-and-a-half years since South Lake Tahoe native Mitch Underhill died unexpectedly at the age of 34. The firefighter/paramedic with Lake Valley Fire Protection District was passionate not only about his family and career, but for the mountains and community he left behind.

In his memory, the Mitch Underhill Mountain Fund has been created at Lake Tahoe Community College.

"He was so loved in the community," said his widow Sarah. "He was an inspiration."

The El Dorado County Senior Nutrition Program in South Lake Tahoe continues to have a great need for community volunteer drivers to help deliver lunchtime meals to homebound seniors and other vulnerable people. The meals are prepared by the Senior Nutrition Program and the volunteers deliver those meals.

Every year in November, Ameriprise Financial advisors and employees participate in national days of service in partnership with Feeding America. This effort centers around helping the 49 million Americans, including 16 million children and 5.3 million seniors who face hunger in the U.S.

On November 9th, the South Lake Tahoe Ameriprise Financial Services, Inc. office sponsored a Bread & Broth “Adopt A Day of Nourishment”, organized by Rick Gross, to join this nationwide effort to feed the hungry.

Alumnus returns to the South Tahoe High gym to attempt his 500th career win

His framed photo still sits high on the wall of the gym at South Tahoe High, one that highlights his being awarded the 1983-84 MVP award for Northern Nevada high school basketball players.

Drew Hibbs lead the South Tahoe High basketball team back then, and now he is returning to his old stomping grounds as the coach of two-time California State basketball champion Foothill High School Mustangs, the Sacramento Bee Coach of the Decade, and a coach looking for his 400th career win.

Senior citizens invited to apply for jobs in South Lake Tahoe

The local American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) office is currently seeking applicants for their South Lake Tahoe work training program. All applicants must be 55 and older, meet low income qualifications and apply through AARP.

They will be filling several jobs including a receptionist position at the Senior Center located at 3050 Lake Tahoe Blvd. Once applicants have been qualified through AARP, SLT Recreation Manager Lauren Thomaselli will be conducting interviews.

New scam targeting seniors who served in the military

A consumer alert has been issued regarding scams targeting seniors who served in the military and their survivors.

“California’s veterans have made extraordinary sacrifices to keep our nation safe and uphold our most sacred values and freedoms,” said Attorney General Kamala Harris. “Sadly, many of our senior veterans are being targeted by scam artists seeking to take advantage of them for a quick profit. My office will continue to protect our veterans and ensure that predators who seek to profit from their service are held accountable.”

Girls from South Tahoe High go for three-peat of Nevada state title

A little snow isn't going to get in the way of South Lake Tahoe's hosting of the 2015 NIAA Division 1-A High School Boys & Girls Soccer Championships November 13 and 14.

Since the new field at South Tahoe High is synthetic, snow can be plowed easily off the field, leaving it in good shape.

"Our maintenance department has done a great job of clearing the soccer field which is in excellent condition considering we recently had two snowstorms" said STHS Athletic Director Tony Sunzeri.

The Nevada State Tournament for both boys and girls soccer teams will be held in South Lake Tahoe Friday and Saturday, November 13 and 14. Both of the teams from South Tahoe High are in position to play in the big game, but first they have to place in either first or second place in next weekend's NIAA 1A Northern Championships in Elko, Nev.

Death of a Salesman at Lake Tahoe Community College

South Tahoe High Homecoming parade and games on Friday

Students at South Tahoe High have been celebrating Homecoming Week festivities all week long, from themed dress-up days to late nights spent building their class floats. The wrap up will be Friday's parade through South Lake Tahoe and Friday night's football games.

The final night of float building was Thursday, when the Lake Tahoe Unified School District's bus garage taken over by students putting on the final touches before judging at 10 p.m. Each class created a float with the assistance of their class advisors.

Heavenly Resort unveils new rock climbing wall

The climbing wall at the top of the Heavenly Gondola is ready just in time for Labor Day Weekend activities.

The permanent climbing wall was unveiled to the public today and adds to the resort’s expanding offerings of summer activities, like ropes courses, zip lines and tubing.

New bleachers at South Tahoe High ready for home opener, almost

The new half-million dollar bleachers at South Tahoe High should be ready for Friday night's home opener between the South Tahoe Vikings and the El Dorado Cougars.

While the press box is in, and the seats are ready, the perimeter of the stands was fenced off on Thursday afternoon. School officials on site at the time said "all should be ready to go by game time."

Summer rainstorms and state regulations for school bleachers held up the process which began right after June, 2015's graduation ceremony.

Low cost flu clinics set for South Lake Tahoe

The El Dorado County Health and Human Services Agency, Public Health Division will begin conducting low-cost community flu vaccination clinics in South Lake Tahoe this fall. Seasonal influenza vaccine will be available in nasal mist and flu shot forms at the clinics.

Tickets on sale now for $11.00 each which includes one pasta dish with a choice of one of three Primo’s famous family sauces. The fundraiser proceeds benefit the seniors at Kelly Ridge Affordable Housing Community by providing them with a benevolent fund to access when there is a special need.
