SnowGlobe two days in: 52 arrests and six noise complaints
Submitted by paula on Wed, 12/31/2014 - 10:07pmWith crowds approaching 14,000 nightly, one would expect some complaints and arrests. SnowGlobe in South Lake Tahoe had both during the first two nights.
On Monday, the first night of the techno-music concert there were 17 arrests for miscellaneous alcohol related violations, mainly minors in possession of alcohol or providing alcohol to a minor. There was one arrest for selling drugs and two noise complaints phoned into the South Lake Tahoe Police Department's dispatch.

As I look back at what happened in South Lake Tahoe over the last 365 days, a lot happened, but what may seem to be a top story to me may not seem as important to a reader.
I reviewed our analytics, the numbers that are kept to show how many people read South Tahoe Now stories at any given point, and drew from those numbers to come up with the "South Lake Tahoe's Top Stories of 2014."
League to Save Lake Tahoe gets $235,000 donation

State Route 28 in Lake Tahoe to receive $12.5 million in improvements

The Washoe County Commissioners approved a Federal Lands Access Program Memorandum of Agreement for federal funding for the design and construction of the improvements.

They will meet at 9:30 a.m. at Sand Harbor for a safety talk, graffiti and trash removal instructions and supplies.
New interactive science exhibit coming to Lake Tahoe

The exhibit will merge the results of citizen science with TERC’s new, real-time monitoring network that is being installed around the lake to understand and improve the clarity and health of Lake Tahoe’s shoreline.
Lake Tahoe native mussels being relocated in order to protect species

Native to the western U.S., the river mussel is now a protected species due to their population being threatened by dams, habitat modification due to the disappearance of Lahontan Cutthroat Trout from the Upper Truckee and other river habitat changing occurrences.
Volunteers Remove 2,260 Pounds of Trash From Six Lake Tahoe Beaches

Several groups have been participating in the Adopt a Beach cleanup program that is getting volunteers out to clean up the mess, both trash and fireworks debris.
The League to Save Lake Tahoe had over 120 volunteers participate in their annual Keep Tahoe Red, White & Blue Beach Cleanup. They cleaned at Commons Beach in Tahoe City, Nevada Beach and Zephyr Shoals on the East Shore, and Kiva, Regan and El Dorado beaches on the South Shore for a total of about 3 miles of shoreline.
BMP Retrofit Project Approved for Tallac Historic Site
Submitted by paula on Sat, 05/31/2014 - 8:48pmThe U.S. Forest Service has released details of the final BMP project for the Tallac Historic Site. The project will reconfigure the three entrances to the site in order to reduce confusion of travelers and create a more efficient use of paved surfaces. There will also be an internal road created to serve as a connector between Tallac, Kiva and the Visitor Center so vehicles will not have to exit to Hwy 89 to move about.
This project was first proposed in January of 2011. Work may begin in Spring of 2015 and is expected to take 10 years to complete.
Report of Floating Body on Cascade Lake Brings Out Search Teams
Submitted by paula on Fri, 04/11/2014 - 6:43pmA hiker in the area of Cascade Lake reported seeing a floating body on the lake Wednesday afternoon. The Lake Tahoe local woman was hiking on the north east side of Cascade Lake near the shoreline when she thought she saw a body float up towards the surface and then sink down and out of view.
El Dorado County Sheriff's Search and Rescue volunteers and CALSTAR responded to the vicinity of the sighting but did not find any evidence of a floating body.
Cycle Through Wine Country to Support Keeping Tahoe Blue

The 21st Great Lake Tahoe Sternwheeler Race churns through the lake’s clear blue waters as the South Shores’ two paddlewheelers, California’s Tahoe Queen and Nevada’s M.S. Dixie II, are pitted against each other, Saturday, Aug. 31, at 10 a.m.
Brunch is served from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. and then departs from respective marinas to battle. The M.S. Dixie II leads the “battle of the paddle,” series 12-8, which is a four-mile race along the shoreline.

A 10-year environmental plan meant to reduce impact and save water has been put in place with upgrades to the irrigation system as well as drought and stress tolerant grass. Other improvements include GPS devices on carts that feature yardage and video tips from pros.

EarthJustice: Weakened Environmental Plan for Lake Tahoe Challenged in Court

The new Tahoe Regional Plan Update, approved in December by the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA), shifts authority over future development decisions to local jurisdictions. The plan also allows those towns and counties to adopt weakened pollution controls that do not meet the minimum environmental requirements established by TRPA.

Scientists assemble five acres of mats for Tahoe Asian clam project

The invasive clams threaten the lake's health and famed clarity.
UC Davis scientists, staff and students are unfolding the long, black mats and enhancing them with rebar, brass grommets and valves that will hold the barriers in place underwater and enable scientific analysis of the project.

Six-week Asian clam control project begins at Emerald Bay
Submitted by Editor on Thu, 10/11/2012 - 4:12pmBoaters heading to Lake Tahoe in the next six weeks may experience a short delay when entering Emerald Bay due to an Asian clam control project that will be taking place there.
The Asian clam control project is being implemented by a team of partners from the Lake Tahoe Aquatic Invasive Species Program, with plans to treat an area of up to 5 acres at the mouth of Emerald Bay. Treatment will be accomplished by covering the infested lake bottom with thin rubber barriers, augmented with organic material, that reduce the available oxygen and smother the clams. It will be the largest project of its type in the history of Lake Tahoe.

Proposal would bring new road, parking spaces to Lake Tahoe Tallac Historic Site
Submitted by Editor on Mon, 09/10/2012 - 4:45pmA new road and an intersection reconfiguration, more parking spaces and BMP water improvements are among some of the changes being proposed by the U.S. Forest Service at the Tallac Historic Site near South Lake Tahoe. Public comments are being taken until Oct. 1 for the proposed changes, which could get off the ground next year.
