Another South Lake Tahoe fire, this time near Van Sickle Bi-State Park

There was another small fire in South Lake Tahoe Friday afternoon, this time in dry brush near the state line.
Multiple agencies responded at 3:43 p.m. just east of the gondola at Van Sickle Bi-State Park.
Within minutes fire crews had a line around the fire.
Smoke, and the smell of smoke, made its way to nearby Raley's and Heavenly Village.
The fire burned about 1/4 of an acre according to Lisa Heron of the U.S. Forest Service.
The cause of the fire is currently unknown and is under investigation.
Smoke in Lake Tahoe Basin from Whittell Forest prescribed burn

Smoke filled the Lake Tahoe Basin on Wednesday, but it isn't from a wildland fire. There is a prescribed burn by the Nevada Division of Forestry in the Whittell Forest between Lake Tahoe and Washoe Lake.
The 250-acre prescribed burn remains under control and is not posing any threat. The forest is owned by the University of Nevada, Reno
Whittell Forest is located on the east slope of the Sierra Nevada in Little Valley, about three miles west of Washoe Lake and 2.5 miles east of Lake Tahoe and 20 miles south of Reno. The burn operation is expected to continue for four or five days.
Lack of childcare in South Lake Tahoe an issue for parents and the community

You hear of the "great recession" causing issues in many areas from jobs and income to housing, but another victim is quality child care in South Lake Tahoe.
Prior to 2009 there were over 45 licensed day care providers on the South Shore, a majority of them licensed for 12 children and open evenings and weekends. Now, there are just 20, 12 of which are licensed for 12, the other eight are small licenses, for six children or less.
Prescribed burning to resume in Eldorado National Forest

If you see smoke around Amador, Georgetown and Placerville it will most likely be from 12,671 acres of National Forest land being burned this fall by the U.S. Forest Service.
USFS will begin its fall prescribed burn program in the Eldorado National Forest as soon as weather conditions are favorable. Fire managers plan to burn approximately, 12,671 acres of National Forest land this fall, winter and spring using a combination of understory and pile burning techniques.

Fast moving wildfire south of Gardnerville

5:15 p.m. update: Weather is helping fire fighters on the fire burning south of Gardnerville.
Recommended evacuations have been lifted and residents can return to their homes in the Ruhenstroth area. The area on the west side of Highway 395, including Stone’s Throw, Frontage Road and the Riverview Mobile Home Park remain closed to the residents.
Highway 395 north and southbound will be opening soon, single lane only with a pilot vehicle.
“The conditions are improving due the light rain, decrease in the winds and cooler temperatures,” said Deputy Chief Dave Fogerson.

Owens River Fire sending smoke into the Lake Tahoe Basin

9/19/16 update 8:00 p.m. - The Owens River Fire has now burned 6,050 acres east of Highway 395 and is now 20 percent contained. The fire is burning southeast of June Lake and northeast of Mammoth Lake.

Owens River Fire in Mono County jumps to 4,500 acres; 10% contained

9:00 a.m. update 9/18: The Owens River Fire burning east of Highway 395 and north of Owens River Road in Mono County has exploded to an estimated 4,500 acres. Even with the growth, firefighter were able to get it 10% contained.
Named the Owens River Fire, it is burning in sagebrush and Jeffrey pine.

The South Shore's Firefest 2016 moved to Hard Rock Hotel

FireFest is back! This year's event will be held on Saturday, September 24 at the Hard Rock Hotel parking lot from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Fire Fest is a free annual event that highlights fire and life safety for children and families.
Sit in a fire truck, escape from the Smoke House, wear firefighting equipment, squirt fire hoses, play in a bounce house, meet Smokey Bear and Sparky, watch fire departments compete, learn about fire resistant construction and enjoy a Kiwanis BBQ!
Ladder trucks, helicopters and a lot of other fire equipment will be there for people to enjoy.
Fire severely damages Tahoe Queen

ZEPHYR COVE, NV - Investigators and vessel inspectors from Coast Guard Sector San Francisco are on the scene of Tuesday's fire on board the 119-foot passenger Lake Tahoe paddle wheel boat, the Tahoe Queen.
"Most of the damage is limited to the boat's pilot house and second deck," Lt. Jake Aulner of the U.S. Coast Guard told South Tahoe Now. "This can be attributed to the great response by the Tahoe Douglas Fire Department."
Aulner and the team from USCG Yerba Buena Island will be at the scene until the cause of the morning blaze is determined.

Accident and fire keeping roads into South Lake Tahoe busy with backed up traffic

A fire just off of Cameron Park Drive is causing backups on Highway 50 in the eastbound lanes. So far, what we know is that several power poles in the Burdock Road area are on fire. El Dorado County Sheriff's deputies have blocked off traffic on Cameron Park Drive heading south to Burdock.
Highway 50 has resulting traffic, my according to CHP that is a result of people watching the flames and smoke which can be seen from the road.

Fresno County fire causing hazy skies in Lake Tahoe and Northern Nevada

A wildfire burning west of the town of Coalinga in Fresno County is responsible for the widespread haze through the Lake Tahoe basin, the Sierra Nevada and Western Nevada.
The National Weather Service in Reno said the Mineral Fire is sending smoke north due to a southerly flow in the lower atmosphere.
So far, fire has burned through 5,000 acres of land in steep terrain. It started on Tuesday and the cause is under investigation.
There are 1,000 firefighters on the scene and several evacuations are in place.

The fires responsible for sending smoke into the Lake Tahoe Basin and Northern Nevada have burned 47,876 acres since being started by lightning strikes on Friday morning.
Known as the Virginia Mountains Complex, the five separate wildland fires include the Anderson (13,196 acres), Sage (4,238 acres), Seven Lakes (3,063 acres), Rock (2,293 acres) and Tule (27,379 acres) Fires. All are burning on mostly BLM land within about 20 miles of each other in an arc about 35 miles north of Reno.

The cause of all the smoke in the Lake Tahoe Basin, the Virginia Mountains Complex Fire, has now consumed 36,091 acres of trees and sagebrush north of Reno.
Five separate wildland fires make up the group, including the Anderson (8,511 acres), Sage (4,238 acres), Seven Lakes (3,063 acres), and Tule (20,279 acres) Fires. All five fires were caused by lightning on July 28 and are burning within about 20 miles of each other in an arc about 35 miles north of Reno.
Firefighters were able to gain ground on the fires, now having 35 percent of the fire contained.

Four separate fires are burning north of Reno, sending smoke throughout Northern Nevada and the Lake Tahoe basin.
The Virginia Mountains Complex is made up currently of four separate wildland fires, including the Anderson (5626 acres), Sage (4239 acres), Seven Lakes (3063 acres) and Tule (7267 acres) Fires. All of these lightning-caused fires are burning within about 20-miles of each other in an arc about 35-miles north of Reno.
The vast majority of the public lands burning are administered by the Bureau of Land Management-Carson City District.
Smoke in Lake Tahoe basin from fire burning in Northern California

Smoke has moved into the Lake Tahoe basin and Northern Nevada, causing concern among those looking at the sky this morning.
According to South Lake Tahoe Fire Chief Jeff Meston, the smoke is most likely from the Soberanes Fire burning near Big Sur in Monterey County. The National Weather Service in Reno believes the same.
No fires are burning near Lake Tahoe or Reno.
As of 7:00 a.m. Monday, the Soberanes Fire has consumed 14,897 acres is 5 percent contained.

8:30 p.m. update 7/4/16: Firefighters working on the Trailhead Fire in El Dorado County gained a lot of ground Monday, getting a containment line around 50 percent of the fire. So far, 5,444 acres have burned.

Central California near Lake Isabella has burned 43,460 acres, destroyed 150 homes, killed two

3:00 p.m. update 6/29: Rain showers in the mountains above Bakersfield have helped fire fighters gain control of the Erskine Fire which has now consumed 46,684 acres near Lake Isabella.
The 1,743 firefighters at the scene have a containment line around 60 percent of the fire.
There are currently no evacuations in place and a re-entry plan has been established. 257 homes were destroyed with another 17 damaged.

June is wildfire awareness month at Lake Tahoe. And nine years later, the 2007 Angora Fire remains a vivid remember that wildfire is one of the greatest threats facing our environment, our homes, and our businesses. We must prepare accordingly.
Our region continues to take important steps to manage that wildfire threat, improve the health of our forests, and create fire adapted communities that are prepared for the next wildfire at Tahoe. But there is more work to do.

Prescribed fire burning near airport in South Lake Tahoe

A prescribed fire by the Lake Valley Fire Department in the trees and brush surrounding the Upper Truckee River caused some concern by area residents on Thursday afternoon.
Large plumes of smoke could be seen from miles away, and with the burn not on the normal U.S. Forest Service weekly list of prescribed burning, many calls were made from concerned citizens. According to the USFS office in South Lake Tahoe, they alone had dozens of phone calls.
Prescribed fire operations may continue at Lake Tahoe

Prescribed burns are slated to continue this week, weather permitting. The Nevada Division of State Lands, the Nevada Division of Forestry and the U.S. Forest Service are scheduled to begin fire operations on Monday, May 23, 2016 on both the Northeast and South shores of Lake Tahoe.
South Shore: Burning may take place off Lake Tahoe Boulevard and Sawmill Road, off Panther Lane near the west end of Gardner Mountain and off Santa Claus Drive and West River Parkway near Christmas Valley.
Northeast Shore: Near Incline Village in the Rocky Point area along Tunnel Creek Road.

South Shore family safe after home burns in early morning fire

A Christmas Valley family is safe after their home suffered substantial damage in an early morning fire on May 16.
A family of three awoke to the sounds of their smoke detectors wailing and called 9-1-1. At that time, they didn't see flames but quickly exited the home.
Firefighters from the Lake Valley Fire Protection District (LVFPD) responded at 4:50 a.m. to the 3300 block of West River Park Drive where they found the second story fully engulfed in flames.
U.S. Forest Service unveils new website and app to track wildfires

Wondering if that smoke in the air is cause for concern? Or just want to make sure you’re the first to know if flames do break out near your home?
Last week the Forest Service debuted a new website where residents can input their location and automatically receive real-time notifications about wildfires that break out in their area.
Then, the tool allows the user to follow any fire that has started within their area of interest, providing the option of text and email updates.
Bijou Bike Park: Preventing damage, safety issues and planned updates

Sledders and snowboarders this season were not kind to the new Bijou Bike Park, breaking down banked trails, overturning tables and benches, and leaving the area full of trash.
At Thursday's South Lake Tahoe Parks & Recreation Commission meeting, City staff, commissions and bike enthusiasts discussed how to ensure the damage and some other issues at the park come to an end.
Fire agencies to continue prescribed burns around Lake Tahoe

Taking advantage of favorable burning conditions, the Lake Valley Fire Protection District and the U.S. Forest Service have planned to conduct prescribed fire operations next week on the South Shore beginning Monday, May 16, 2016.
Burning operations are scheduled to take place in four locations:
Northeast of the Lake Tahoe Airport near Barbara Avenue
Off Lake Tahoe Boulevard and Sawmill Road
Off Panther Lane near the west end of Gardner Mountain

The following are incidents the South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue department responded to from April 25 to May 12, 2016.
4/25 - 5 calls: 3 EMS, 1 building fire, 1 interfacility transfer
4/26 - 8 calls: 3 EMS, 2 interfacility transfer, 1 psych transfer, 1 vehicle accident with injuries, 1 canceled en route
4/27 - 11 calls: 6 EMS, 1 police matter, 1 person in distress, 1 canceled en route, 1 false alarm, 1 CO detector malfunction
4/28 - 5 calls: 3 EMS, 2 interfacility transfer
4/29 - 11 calls: 5 EMS, 2 psych transfer, 3 canceled en route, 1 smoke detector activation

Fire destroys condos in Tahoe Keys

5/4/16 11:00 a.m. update: The fire that swept through a Tahoe Keys condo complext on Tuesday caused an estimated $3 million in damage. Seven of the units suffered significant damage and a few other units in the surrounding condominiums have had some water and/or smoke damage. Firefighters arrived after receiving the 1:48 p.m. 911 call, and the fire was contained at approximately 4:10 p.m. Fire fighting personnel remained on the scene until 9:00 p.m.
Prescribed burns to continue in Lake Tahoe basin

Prescribed fire operations are planned to continue this week on the east and south shores of Lake Tahoe.
The U.S. Forest Service, the Nevada Division of State Lands and the Nevada Division of Forestry will start the fire operations on Monday, May 2, weather permitting.
South Shore: Near Lake Tahoe Boulevard and Sawmill Road, Panther Lane near South Tahoe High School, off Highway 89 near Spring Creek, and off Santa Claus Drive and West River Parkway near Christmas Valley.

Weather permitting, Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District and the U.S. Forest Service have scheduled prescribed fire operations again this week, starting April 25.
East Shore: Near Spooner Summit, Camp Galilee and on Kingsbury Grade near Edgewood Drive.
South Shore: Near Lake Tahoe Boulevard and Sawmill Road, Panther Lane near South Tahoe High School, off Highway 89 near Spring Creek, and off Santa Claus Drive and West River Parkway near Christmas Valley.

The following are incidents the South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue department responded to from April 14 to April 20, 2016.
4/14: 5 calls: 5 EMS.
4/15: 7 calls: 2 EMS, 1 interfacility transfer, 1 assist for invalid, 2 false alarm, 1 carbon monoxide incident.
4/16: 11 calls: 7 EMS, 1 sprinkler activation with no fire, 1 good intent call, 1 canceled en route, 1 interfacility transfer.
4/17: 4 calls: 2 EMS, 1 canceled en route, 1 vehicle fire.
4/18: 7 calls: 4 EMS, 1 public service, 1 vehicle accident with injuries, 1 interfacility transfer.

Weather permitting, Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District, the Nevada Division of Forestry and the U.S. Forest Service are schedule to continue prescribed fire operations starting Monday, April 18, 2016.
East Shore: Burning planned on the north side of Spooner Lake off Highway 28, Spooner Summit, Camp Galilee and on Kingsbury Grade near Edgewood Drive.
South Shore: Burning planned near Lake Tahoe Boulevard and Sawmill Road, Panther Lane near South Tahoe High School, off Highway 89 near Spring Creek, and off Santa Claus Drive and West River Parkway near Christmas Valley.

The following are incidents the South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue department responded to from March 17 to April 13, 2016.
3/17 - 11 calls: 5 EMS, 1 interfacility psych transfer, 1 building fire, 1 wildland fire, 1 call to assist invalid, 2 canceled en route.
3/18 - 6 calls: 2 EMS, 1 system malfunction, 1 excessive heat and scorch burns with no fire, 1 assist invalid, 1 canceled en route.
3/19 - 13 calls: 9 EMS, 1 canceled en route, 1 false alarm, 1 smoke detector malfunction, 1 invalid assist.
Prescribed burns continue in Lake Tahoe basin

Weather permitting, California State Parks, the Nevada Division of Forestry and the U.S. Forest Service are scheduled to continue prescribed fire operations beginning Monday, April 11, 2016.
On the North Shore - 10 acres at Burton Creek State Park.
On the East Shore - 32 acres at Sand Harbor, 28 acres at Spooner Summit and 200 acres at Camp Galilee.
