Year's First National Water Forecast Predicts Limited Supply in Lake Tahoe and Rest of West

WASHINGTON, Jan. 15, 2014 – A limited water supply is predicted west of the Continental Divide, according to the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) National Water and Climate Center (NWCC) in its first forecast of 2014. The NWCC also predicts normal water supply east of the Continental Divide and will continue to monitor, forecast and update water supplies for the next six months.

Prescribed Burns Move Over to Spooner Summit Area

U.S. Forest Service fuels management crews will begin prescribed fire operations in Slaughterhouse Canyon, north of Spooner Summit tomorrow, Wednesday, October 30, 2013. The total unit size is 30 acres. Fuels management crews may burn as much of the unit as possible, weather and conditions permitting. “Because of the recent snowfall, conditions allow our crews to carry out operations on larger units,” said Kit Bailey, Fire Management Officer with the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit. Operations are likely to continue through the end of the week.

Heavenly Receives 6-8” of Snow; Kicks Off Snowmaking for November 22 Opening

In anticipation of a November 22, 2013 opening day, Heavenly Mountain Resort has fired up the West Coast’s largest snowmaking system and has begun making snow at the top of the Gondola and on California Trail. The resort received its first significant snowfall of the season last night with 6-8 inches of snow overnight on the mountain.

Kirkwood celebrates seven feet of snow and 40th anniversary New Year's Eve

With seven feet of new snow in the past four days, Kirkwood Mountain Resort is living up to its reputation for the deepest and driest snow around Lake Tahoe and is well on its way to exceeding its average annual snowfall total of 600 inches.

So far the 2012-13 season snowfall total for Kirkwood is 210 inches, and more is on the way with storms heading into the New Year in time for the mountain's 40th anniversary.

Well, maybe not that dramatic but there is the potential for some gusty gusts and big waves along the shores of Lake Tahoe over the next 24 hours or so.
The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a Wind Advisory and Lake Wind Advisory for the Lake Tahoe Basin through Wednesday morning.

Kirkwood opens 40th season with four feet of snow

Kirkwood Mountain Resort opened its 40th anniversary season when the lifts began turning at 9 a.m. Friday, five days earlier than its originally-scheduled opening day. Kirkwood opened with one chairlift and five trails, accessing 40 total acres.
“The last two storms that have rolled through the Sierra have dropped a combined four feet of snow at Kirkwood, allowing us to open early for all our passionate skiers and riders,” said Casey Blann, general manager of Kirkwood. “This will be a great start to the 40th anniversary season at Kirkwood, and the first with Vail Resorts.”

Sierra's winter forecast still trending dry, but 'anything can happen'

More wintry weather is on the way, ski resorts are opening early but long-term forecasts continue to indicate a subpar winter ahead.
Thursday’s long-term forecast issued by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration calls for both drier and warmer-than-normal conditions for western Nevada and the Sierra in December, January and February – the most critical months when it comes to winter snowfall.

Cold and windy winter storm moves into Lake Tahoe Basin

Here is a video update from the National Weather Service in Reno regarding the winter storm moving into the Lake Tahoe Basin.
The strong cold front has moved into the Lake Tahoe area with snow levels expected down to the valley floors. Snowfall will be the heaviest Thursday night with lake effect snow bands possible on the east side of Lake Tahoe and in the Carson Range on Friday night as well as southeast of Pyramid Lake.

Weather changes ahead late in the week with snow possible

The Lake Tahoe basin can expect seasonably warm weather through midweek with changes ahead that may bring snow down to lake level and the valley floors before the weekend, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.
A cold front is forecast to bring gusty winds Thursday with showers spreading into the Sierra, Lake Tahoe Basin and western Nevada. Showers and much colder conditions will then spread over all the area Thursday night through Saturday with snow levels falling to all valley floors.
