Brooke Laine appointed to South Lake Tahoe City Council

Brooke Laine was appointed to the South Lake Tahoe City Council on Tuesday to fill the seat vacated by former Mayor Claire Fortier.
The appointment was made during a special session of the South Lake Tahoe City Council. Laine will be sworn in Feb. 5 and will serve through December 2014. Nine had applied for the job.

The deadline for submittal of applications for one appointed seat on the South Lake Tahoe City Council closed Friday at 5 p.m. and nine applications have been received, City Clerk Susan Alessi reports.

Applicants will be interviewed in the following order at the Special City Council meeting Tuesday, Jan. 29, beginning at 9 a.m. The first interviewee is Howard Bittner, followed by Kathay Lovell, Joan Walthall, Brooke Laine, Bruce Grego, Austin Sass, Billy Crawford, Scott Valentine, and Kay Ogden.

The South Lake Tahoe City Council is soliciting applications for the following Commissions: Parks and Recreation, Clean Tahoe, City Lay Member Appointee to the TRPA Advisory Planning, and El Dorado Commission on Aging.

The South Lake Tahoe City Council voted unanimously Thursday to appoint a fifth council member to replace Claire Fortier through an application and interview process.

South Lake Tahoe City Council to discuss filling Fortier vacancy

The South Lake Tahoe City Council will hold a special meeting Dec. 27 to discuss options available for filling the vacancy of Claire Fortier who resigned effective Dec. 14. Fortier's much-anticipated resignation was because her spouse has relocated to Redmond, Wash.
The 9 a.m. meeting will be at the City Council Chambers, 1901 Airport Road, South Lake Tahoe. Councilwoman JoAnn Conner will be out of the area and will participate via teleconference.

Wilderness area proposal would harm Lake Tahoe economy says public Pro-Access group

With the comment period ending Thursday, August 30, the newly formed Sierra Pro-Access Group is asking outdoor enthusiasts to write against a U.S. Forest Service alternative plan that proposes creating new wilderness areas that would shut down some of the locals' most beloved recreation areas on public land around the Lake Tahoe Basin.

The economic effects on the Lake Tahoe Basin could be devastating, the group says, shutting out what clearly has been public access for not only snowmobiles, but mountain bikes, dirt bikes, and 4-wheel ATVs.
