Submitted by paula on Sat, 02/11/2017 - 10:36amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CALIF. = Rain and snow in 2017 has brought Lake Tahoe up to levels not seen since the summer of 2013, and they may pass that point this week.
As of February 11, 2017, the lake is 3.14 feet above its natural rim with an elevation of 6,226.14 feet above sea level. To reach the maximum elevation, Lake Tahoe has just 2.86 feet to go, 1.14 to reach "full."
Carson City deputy plucks teen stuck in waist deep mud along flooded hiking trail
Submitted by paula on Fri, 02/10/2017 - 11:16pmA 13-year-old girl who became stuck up to her waist in a mud bog along a hiking trail near Combs Canyon was plucked to safety Friday afternoon by a Carson City sheriff’s deputy.
Kaitlin Schultz said she was “very cold” but “very happy” to be found safe after she had stepped into a four-foot deep mud hole and was unable to free herself along a hiking trail near Ormsby and Combs Canyon Road in northwest Carson City.
Flooding around Lake Tahoe prompts road closures
Submitted by paula on Wed, 02/08/2017 - 3:05pmA flood warning remains in effect for South Lake Tahoe until Wednesday evening. One storm system will be leaving the area as a new atmospheric river heads into the region on Thursday.
Flood watch warning is now in place for Thursday at 10:00 a.m. to Friday at 4:00 a.m. This will be combine with a winter storm warning starting at the same time and going until Saturday at 1:00 a.m. Those warnings will be replaced with a dry period over the weekend with sunny clear skies and temperatures into the 40s and 50s.

Highway 50 on Lake Tahoe's east shore closed due to new rock slides
Submitted by paula on Wed, 02/08/2017 - 1:40pmLAKE TAHOE, NEV. - Two more boulders have come off the hill onto Highway 50 north of Cave Rock, causing transportation officials to temporarily close down the road in both directions on Wednesday, February 8.
The boulders, both larger than a vehicle, came down in the last two hours at Logan Creek, the same area where boulders rolled onto the roadway on Monday and Tuesday. All of the boulders have been larger than the size of a passenger vehicle.
More rock slides on Highway 50 along Lake Tahoe shoreline

No vehicles were involved and there were no injuries.

Up-and-comer Red Gerard from Silverthorne, Colo., topped the field to take the win for the men, while South Lake Tahoe's Jamie Anderson continued her global domination with a win for the ladies. Kyle Mack (West Bloomfield, MI) and Hailey Langland (San Clemente, CA) each took second while Dylan Thomas (Kingsley, PA) and Julia Marino (Westport, CT) were third.

Many streets in South Lake Tahoe remain narrow and thick with snow, making it hard to drive through neighborhoods.
Just as residents struggle with all that snow left on their roofs, driveways and walkways, City snowplows are also struggling with what seemed at times as nonstop snow.
Squaw Valley closes after fatal accident of ski patroller
Submitted by paula on Tue, 01/24/2017 - 12:42pm2:00 p.m. update - Joe Zuiches, a 42 year-old resident of Olympic Valley and a member of the Squaw Valley professional ski patrol since 2012, was killed in a fatal incident at 8:35 a.m. Tuesday morning, prior to regularly scheduled operations, during avalanche control activities at the top of Gold Coast Ridge at Squaw Valley. The cause is believed to be the detonation of an explosive charge. An investigation is ongoing in cooperation with the Placer County Sheriff’s Office and North Tahoe Fire Department.
Douglas County looks for community input on strategic plan

Snow Day Monday for South Lake Tahoe schools

LTUSD crews are performing ongoing snow removal operations, as are the City of South Lake Tahoe, Caltrans and El Dorado County.
As of 2:00 p.m. Sunday, no other school in the Lake Tahoe Basin has announced school closures, including Lake Tahoe Community College.

Power being restored to more Lake Tahoe residents

Since Saturday, Liberty has been using a helicopter to reach remote areas to repair severe damage necessary to restore service to the 136 customers in the River Road area. Unfortunately, helicopter operations were limited today due to weather and once they were underway, additional damage was discovered. If the weather cooperates and the helicopter is able to fly, Liberty hopes to restore power to these last customers by Tuesday night.
Controversy brewing as City and County reps on Tahoe Conservancy Board resign
Submitted by paula on Sun, 01/15/2017 - 5:33pmFriday's board meeting of the California Tahoe Conservancy (CTC) was delayed almost two hours due to ice on the road near near Zephyr Cove, causing it to close, and those weren't the only icy conditions on the South Shore that day.
The other ice could be felt during the meeting as conflict of interest, ethics, integrity, suspicious actions and lack of transparency were the theme of the day.
All three items on the agenda Friday were placed there amid a stressed relationship between the City of South Lake Tahoe, El Dorado County and Patrick Wright, the Executive Director of the CTC.

Lake Tahoe now 1.67 feet above natural rim, highest January since 2013

With a natural rim of 6223 feet in altitude, Lake Tahoe is above that by 1.67 feet at 6224.67 today, January 15, 2017. On this date in 2016, the lake was almost three feet lower at 6221.7. The highest January point in the past six years was in 2012 when the lake was at 6226.62. The highest point during this period was on June 5, 2012 when the elevation of the lake was 6227.65.
Meyers family trapped when tree falls and splits roof during blizzard
Submitted by paula on Thu, 01/12/2017 - 5:38pmDuring the height of Tuesday's blizzard, Lake Valley Fire (LVF) crews responded to home in Meyers where a tree had fallen and crashed through the roof, pinning one person against a window.
A Sokolov family of three, Paul, Jamie and Alyssa, lived in the home which suffered major damage as the mature tree went through the roof, through bedrooms and to the garage. Jamie was pinned, but LVF was able to quickly extricate her, the rest of the family and their pets.
Miraculously, all were unharmed.
Power could be out for days for those between Tahoe City and Fallen Leaf Lake
Submitted by paula on Thu, 01/12/2017 - 5:15pm5:30 p.m. update Thursday - The Tahoe Keys and Tahoe Mountain area has just lost power temporarily. The West Shore has been restored from Tahoe City South to Sugar Pine Rd. and HWY89 (735 Customers). South Shore crews are deployed and working on six primary wires serving multiple areas. Restoration times are estimated between 8:00 p.m. tonight and tomorrow afternoon. Tahoe Pines Area (Barker Pass Rd. to Cherry St.) has very heavy damage with multiple poles down that requires helicopter repair. Weather permitting, helicopter repair will start tomorrow.
South Lake Tahoe digs out after blizzard drops feet of snow

As residents move over four feet of snow from their driveways, ski resorts are moving over 12 feet of snow from around their lifts so they can operate during the busy holiday ski weekend ahead.

Kingsbury Grade closed again due to sinkhole issues
Submitted by paula on Sun, 01/08/2017 - 9:57pmCrews from the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) are headed to SR207/Kingsbury Grade to investigate a sinkhole which has resulted in another closure of the main connection between Lake Tahoe and the Carson Valley.
A sinkhole formed Sunday night in the same general area of the previous erosion which kept the road closed for 4 days. Crews will determine if is the the exact drainage pipe impacted before, or if it is a new one according to Meg Ragonese of NDOT.
The road is closed from Tramway to Foothill Blvd, leaving the lake side from Highway 50 to Tramway open.
High water forcing evacuation of some Douglas County homes
Submitted by paula on Sun, 01/08/2017 - 8:45pmRising water concerns and flood in Douglas County has prompted officers to evacuate 15 homes Kingslane Mobile Home Park and 49 homes form the older section of the Aspen Mobile Home Park on 1380 Centerville Lane in Gardnerville, Nev.
Evacuees may go to the Douglas County Community Center located at 1329 Waterloo Ln. Small pets in crates are accepted.
Transportation is available for those in need, contact the Flood hotline at 782-9099 or 783-6404.

South Lake Tahoe schools closed Monday due to flooding
Submitted by paula on Sun, 01/08/2017 - 5:56pm6:53 p.m. Sunday update - Lake Tahoe Community College will also be closed Monday, January 9. Douglas County Schools have changed their original plan and all schools will be closed.
Truckee Tahoe Schools will be evaluated at 4:00 a.m. Monday, then a message will be sent out by 4:30 a.m. if closed.
All Washoe County Schools, including Incline Village, will also be closed on Monday.

Flooding closing South Lake Tahoe area roads
Submitted by paula on Sun, 01/08/2017 - 11:31amSouth Lake Tahoe, Calif. - El Dorado County has closed Lake Tahoe Blvd at Sawmill Pond due to flooding just before 11:00 a.m. It is closed in both directions according to the California Highway Patrol with over two feet of water on the roadway. They are expecting the flooding to spread in the area.
South Lake Tahoe Police Department is assisting with signage going up to warn travelers.
12:52 p.m. Sunday update - Highway 50 at Sierra at Tahoe Blvd is experiencing flooding. Reports of high water at Apache Drive in Meyers by the Post Office, and Lake Tahoe Blvd around Angora Creek.

If you're like most people, you think of a story like the following true story, where police conduct an operation at a suspected residential brothel and encounter Sally, a 25-year-old citizen of Korea. Sally came to the U.S. having been promised a job as a maid. Instead, she was threatened with violence and forced to work in a brothel until she made $15,000. But the brothel owner retained $10,000, plus additional fees for food and a motel room when she could not work.

Update on current conditions:
US 50 from Meyers to Twin Bridges - Chains or 4WD with snow tires on all 4 wheels.
SR 89 from Christmas Valley to Hope Valley - Chains or 4WD with snow tires on all 4 wheels over the summit. At 9:32 a.m. a tree fell down onto the roadway and they are clearing it now.
SR 89 through Emerald Bay is closed at this time.
Sierra snowpack's water content Is 53% below average

Frank Gehrke, chief of the California Cooperative Snow Surveys Program, led a media tour on January 3, 2017 to their normal spot near the turnoff to Sierra-at-Tahoe and found a snow water equivalent of six inches, which is 5.3 inches less that the average early-January total of 11.3 inches, 53 percent of normal.
Study finds more extreme storms ahead for California

The storm was fueled by what meteorologists refer to as the “Pineapple Express” — an atmospheric river of moisture that is whipped up over the Pacific’s tropical waters and swept north with the jet stream.
Minors with alcohol at SnowGlobe biggest problem for law enforcement
Submitted by paula on Sun, 01/01/2017 - 7:00pmThe 2016 South Lake Tahoe three-day long music festival, SnowGlobe, is over, and the thousands of of Electronic Dance Music (EDM) fans are headed home after enjoying themselves during the outdoor concert. Like with most festivals of this type, most of the arrests and citations issued by South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD), El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO), and Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) were for underage drinking.
Early tabulations show that during SnowGlobe this year there were 238 arrests, 148 of those were citations to minors in possession of alcohol.

Two sent to hospital after early morning Douglas County crash

At approximately 6:50 a.m. Thursday, police responded to report of a crash on State Route 88 at Centerville. Police say the driver of a black Mazda attempted to cross the eastbound lane when it struck a gold pickup truck heading southbound.
The female driver of the black Mazda was taken by Care Flight to Renown with life-threatening injuries.
11-year-old boy from Sacramento dies in crash on Highway 50 near Riverton
Submitted by paula on Thu, 12/29/2016 - 9:17pmAn 11-year-old boy was killed and three other people were injured when a BMW went off Highway 50 in El Dorado County, the California Highway Patrol said.
The crash happened about 12 a.m. Wednesday on westbound Highway 50 near Riverton Court when a 33-year-old man driving a BMW lost control of his vehicle as he was making a turn, officers said. The driver tried to apply his breaks when the wheel locked causing the car to go off the road.
Placerville CHP Sgt. Chris Davis said the speed limit in this area is 55 mph, but that night it was dropped to 45 as a precaution.

Reno man arrested on pimping and prostitution charges in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Mon, 12/19/2016 - 7:21pm12/22/16 update: The Reno man accused of bringing female(s) to South Lake Tahoe for prostitution remains behind bars at the El Dorado County Jail tonight on $345,000 bail. 32-year-old Francisco Daniel Nieves was arrested on December 19 without incident in South Lake Tahoe after a victim went into the Carson City Sheriff's Office to report the crime.
This case is still under investigation.
Nieves will be in El Dorado County court on December 30 for an 8:30 a.m. hearing. At this point in time he is being represented by a public defender.

Jamie Anderson notches sixth World Cup gold medal in big air
Submitted by paula on Sun, 12/18/2016 - 9:16pmJamie Anderson nabbed her sixth World Cup gold medal of the season in the big air event at the U.S. Grand Prix on Saturday night.
Anderson, who is the reigning Olympic champion in slopestyle, notched a total of 151.25 points. It was her second World Cup gold in big air—her other four World Cup gold medals have come in slopestyle.
The big air event will make its debut at the 2018 Olympics in PyeongChang.
Project takes STHS grad on journey through family's experience with mental illness

Santa Cruz, South Tahoe High grad Daniel Kagan used something many wouldn't have thought of, his brother's mental health records.
