Firefighters stop advance of massive Reno wildfire

Update 5 p.m.: Firefighters have stopped the advance of the fire and are now going back and putting out hot spots. Light snow and lessening winds are helping the efforts. Reno Fire Chief Mike Hernandez said 25 homes have been impacted by the fire. The fire has burned between 1,700 and 2,000 acres. One firefighter has been injured, one person suffered a heart attack and died and more than 4,500 NV Energy customers are without power.

Hellman family donates $100K to keep mansion functional

The family that built a century-old Lake Tahoe mansion now owned by the state has donated $100,000 for its upkeep. The state Department of Parks and Recreation has accepted the donation from the Hellman family of San Francisco to support restoration efforts at the Hellman-Ehrman estate in Lake Tahoe. The mansion is along the west shores of Lake Tahoe in the Ed Z'berg Sugar Pine Point State Park.

KTVN Channel 2 sports director JK Metzker dies in accident; arrest made

UPDATED: Sad news to report today. KTVN-TV in Reno confirms that Channel 2 News Sports Director JK Metzker died this afternoon from injuries he suffered after being struck by a vehicle. The accident happened on North Virginia Street near 17th Street at 11:50pm last night following the University of Nevada Wolf Pack football game.

Contractors Waiting For Grant Money for Tahoe Defensible Space Work

A number of companies who help clear the forest to prevent wild fires, have not gotten paid for the work they did this fire season, reports MyNews4.com and KRNV Channel 4 in Reno. Tamarack Lodge at Heavenly Receives LEED Environmental Certification

Heavenly Mountain Resort announced today that Tamarack Lodge received Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification by the U.S. Green Building Council. Tamarack Lodge is the first LEED-certified, on-mountain building at Lake Tahoe. It will serve as the blueprint for the construction of Northstar-at-Tahoe’s new on-mountain lodge and as a guide for future Vail Resorts development.

Voters approve Measure R, two new STPUD board members

Voters on Tuesday approved Measure R and two new South Tahoe Public Utility directors. Measure R won approval by 70 percent. It expands the South Lake Tahoe Recreational Facilities Joint Powers Authority's use of Measure S funds to include the renovation of bike trails and makes improvements to ball fields. To the delight of Lake Tahoe's jib-starved legions, the first ski lift in California started spinning Friday afternoon at Boreal Mountain Resort on Donner Summit. The previous week of cold nights in the Sierra allowed Boreal to make enough snow to open one 100 percent man-made run. The open slope featured terrain park obstacles top to bottom.

The newly appointed director of the Nevada Department of Tourism and Cultural Affairs — the revamped Nevada Tourism Commission — will deliver opening remarks for the two-day Governor’s Conference on Tourism beginning Nov. 29. With a shrinking budget that not only is dwarfed by other state departments but by state tourism boards across the West, Vecchio has her eyes on the low-cost 21st century version of over-the-fence chitchat with friends and neighbors — social networks such as Twitter and Facebook.

State gun laws in question following Carson City IHOP rampage

Law enforcement leaders, a shooting victim and some lawmakers are calling for a review of Nevada's gun laws after a mentally ill man shot 11 people with an assault weapon at a Carson City restaurant last month, leaving five dead.

Moving Forward after The IHOP Tragedy

The windows on the front of the Carson City IHOP were broken when a gunman opened fire inside the restaurant last month. Saturday morning, workers could be seen inside and outside of the restaurant on South Carson Street - putting in new windows. An IHOP spokesperson told KOLO 8 News Now that the restaurant is scheduled to reopen before the holidays, however she would not give an exact date. On this same weekend, members of the community came together to help out those who survived the shooting rampage. Go here for the story and video.

South Lake Tahoe Finance Department Recognized for Accounting

The Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) of the United States and Canada has awarded the City of South Lake Tahoe the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for the City's FY 2010 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR). According to a city press release, this certificate is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting and represents a significant accomplishment by a government and its management.

Lake Tahoe home values slump by 10 percent; East Shore on the positive

The East Shore continued to outperform the rest of the Lake Tahoe real estate market, which saw home values fall overall during the third quarter. The median price for a single-family home in Lake Tahoe fell 10 percent to $370,500 from July to September, according to Chase International’s latest housing report.

South Lake Tahoe city budget fight looms large; layoffs eminent

As an early snowstorm descended on South Lake Tahoe the first week of October, the continuing winter of economic discontent looks bleak for the city’s budget woes and employees facing layoff. Seventeen positions are still on the chopping block. At least half of those positions are linked to street maintenance and snow removal operations. While negotiations between the bargaining units and the city continue to be held, there is a hint of an impasse — while the city functions on only an interim budget until the end of the month.

Remains found confirmed by family as Marie Hanson; Services on Saturday at Sierra Community Church

Update 7:14PM: Marie Hanson's family has confirmed through Facebook that the remains found Sunday at the site in Washington are Marie's. Services will be held this Saturday, October 15th at Sierra Community Church, Sierra Boulevard in South Lake Tahoe at noon. More info to follow.

UPDATE 3:52PM: Searchers have found skeletal remains and jewelry in an area of the Gifford Pinchot National Forest where a South Lake Tahoe woman, Marie Hanson, was last seen during the Rainbow Family gathering. The Skamania County Sheriff's Office said in a statement Monday that searchers would continue to look for other evidence to link the remains and jewelry to Hanson, 54, reported missing by family since July 9. Gas station, USA, robbed at gunpoint in South Lake Tahoe

The USA gas station located on Lake Tahoe Blvd. was robbed by two men wearing masks late Saturday night. Suspect 1 pulled out a large revolver type gun on the clerk and demanded money. There were 3 customers in the store at the time. No one was hurt or injured.

Soldier had hopes of becoming a teacher

Garrett Fant knew since he was a young boy that he wanted to be a soldier. He enlisted in the Army as soon as he was old enough, dismissing pleas from his brother to join him in the Navy. Pilot hurt in morning plane crash at Truckee Tahoe Airport

A pilot was seriously injured after a twin-engine plane crashed shortly after takeoff near Lake Tahoe.
Kevin Bumen, director of aviation at Truckee Tahoe Airport, said the pilot was the only person onboard when the Piper Aztec crashed on airport grounds and caught fire about 9:20 a.m. this morning. Go here to read the story.

Capital City Residents, State And Local Officials, Gather To Commemorate 9-11

CARSON CITY – Residents of this capital city, hit with tragedy earlier in the week with the shooting deaths of four people at a local restaurant, gathered at two somber ceremonies today to mark the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks.
About 300 people gathered at Mills Park for the Patriot’s Day – 9-11 Remembrance sponsored by the Capital Baptist Church.
A similar number then gathered at the park to see the unveiling of a 1,600-pound I-beam from the World Trade Center towers donated to the city to form the basis of a 9-11 memorial.
