To raise public awareness of how to live in harmony with Tahoe’s iconic black bears, a team of cyclist will be giving bear hugs on September 9th at spots around Lake Tahoe as part of Tahoe Expo. Those gathered at Sand Harbor for Beats for Bears will receive the hug and pass it along. The cyclists will arrive between 1 and 3 pm when Liz Broscoe will be holding the community drum circle.

Is Lake Tahoe due for a big earthquake? If so, will a large tsunami follow? That's the question a research team is literally digging to answer.
Using advanced technology to collect ancient evidence, including core samples from the Lake's deepest points, the research team is made up of geologists from the California Geological Survey, Northern Illinois University and the University of Nevada-Reno. Their mission is to find out the potential effects of a large-scale earthquake hitting the Lake and what kind of tsunami the lake could produce.

UPDATE 3:27PM: KOLO Reno Channel 8 reports the brother of the registered owner of the Piper that crashed in South Lake Tahoe Saturday night says all five people aboard died. Javier de la Mora says his brother, Francisco de la Mora, of Fresno was in the airplane when it crashed. Francisco's wife and daughter and two other people were on board as well. UPDATE 2:56PM: The City of South Lake Tahoe issued the following news release and photos this afternoon:

A small plane crashed shortly after takeoff on Saturday, August 25th at 9:48 pm from Lake Tahoe Airport. The crash ignited a fire in the meadow just past the airport off of Winnemucca Avenue. The fire burned approximately one acre and took an hour and a half to extinguish.
El Dorado County Sheriff’s Department reports that the plane had been heard by witnesses to have apparent engine problems, and was seen to dip downward into the ground while attempting a turn.
According to Federal Aviation Administration, there were multiple victims and no survivors of the crash. The names of victims are not being released until notification of families is confirmed.
“Our hearts go out to the families of those that perished in this tragic accident. Thanks to the quick and cooperative efforts by multiple agencies; the fire caused by this crash was put out quickly,” said Mayor Claire Fortier.
Earlier in the day, the 23rd Annual Lake in the Sky Air Show was held at Lake Tahoe Airport. This plane was not affiliated with the air show in any way.
The location of the plane crash is within El Dorado County limits and the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Department is the lead agency of this investigation. FAA and National Transportation Safety Board officials arrived on site today to perform an investigation and to identify the cause of the crash.

UPDATE 1:46PM: There are multiple victims to Saturday night's plane crash in South Lake Tahoe, confirmed El Dorado Sheriff's Office Lt. Pete Van Arnum. Investigators were processing the wreckage to confirm how many victims and their identities. Investigators do not believe the victims to be locals from the South Lake Tahoe area, he said. No information concerning the identity of the victims, or the plane will be released until positive confirmation has been made, he said. Investigators from the FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are assisting with the investigation.

UPDATE 6:55AM: A small airplane crashed in the Barton Meadows area in South Lake Tahoe sparking a wildland fire on Saturday night. Presumably there are no survivors. The crash was reported at 9:48 p.m. after the plane took off from Lake Tahoe Airport, said El Dorado County Sheriff's Lt. Pete Van Arnum early Sunday morning. Witnesses reported the plane was experiencing engine trouble and was seen moving downward before it crashed into flames, he said.

Revenues have been sizzling all summer for businesses that give residents and visitors to Greater Reno-Tahoe an escape from sweltering 100-degree heat.
Andrew Laughlin, owner of Sand Harbor Rentals, says revenues are up about 15 percent on a daily basis from 2011 for rentals of kayaks, personal watercraft and stand-up paddleboards at one of Lake Tahoe’s most popular beaches. The famed 3,000-acre Royal Gorge property on Donner Summit in the Sierra Nevada will be bought and protected from development under an agreement announced today by The Trust for Public Land, the Truckee Donner Land Trust (TDLT), and the Northern Sierra Partnership (NSP).

Nearly two million Californians should receive a health insurance premium rebate this week. The rebates are the result of the federal Affordable Care Act.
The federal law requires health insurers to spend at least 80percent of their premium money on actual health costs, rather than marketing and other non-medical expenses.
Insurers who don't meet that percentage are required to issue refunds.
California Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones says premium rebates total about $74 million, or about $65 per family.

SACRAMENTO — The director of California's state parks system resigned Friday after officials discovered that her department had $54 million in unspent money in its accounts that it had not reported to the state finance department.
Ruth Coleman, who had led the agency since 2003, stepped down, and the department's second-in-command, Acting Deputy Director Michael Harris, was fired.
California Resources Secretary John Laird planned a 1 p.m. news conference to address the issue and issued a statement saying the state Attorney General's Office would be investigating.

Intense and deeply destructive "super fires," like Colorado's current Waldo Canyon fire, which has claimed two lives and burned 350 homes, are almost assured in Northern California's future, according to a U.S. Forest Service scientist.

SAND HARBOR, Nev. — Just after dawn on Sunday, with a white moon still visible over mountain-ringed Lake Tahoe, Fred Jackson maneuvered his small boat into clear water about 35 feet deep.

The U.S. Olympic Committee will not seek bids to host the 2022 Winter Games, and the coalition that was attempting to bring the Winter Games to Reno-Tahoe is fully on board with the decision, saying the short amount of time to submit a bid proved to be too much of a challenge.
The USOC, which conducted a teleconference call amongst its board members Tuesday, announced afterward it would prefer to bid on the 2024 Summer Olympics or the 2026 Winter Games.
