Reno resident Tony Herrin, 36, was sentenced today by United States District Judge Kimberly J. Mueller to two years and nine months in prison and ordered to pay restitution of $411,333 for theft of government property, United States Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner announced.

The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a Red Flag Warning for gusty winds and low humidity in effect from 12:00 p.m. through 10 p.m. Sunday for the Lake Tahoe Basin and parts of western Nevada.

They are calling for winds southwest to west at 15 to 25 mph and gusts up to 40 mph, with two to four foot waves on Lake Tahoe. These are hazardous conditions for kayakers and paddleboarders.

This combination of gusty winds and low humidity will create conditions that could promote rapid fire growth.

A project to remove invasive plants from the Lake Tahoe Basin will continue this summer. The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) will eradicate, control, and contain these plants using chemical treatment. Work will occur at approximately 70 infestation sites beginning May 15 and continuing through September, 2015.

Clarity levels at Lake Tahoe in 2014 showed the biggest improvements in more than a decade, according to researchers at the University of California, Davis, who have studied the lake for the last half century.

The improvements are in part due to continuous work from the Lake Tahoe community to lower pollutants to the lake. They were also influenced by the drought, as reduced precipitation meant fewer contaminants flowed into Lake Tahoe, particularly during the summer, when clarity levels were the highest recorded since 2002.

Throngs of people were seen throughout South Lake Tahoe Monday afternoon and evening as they made their way to Lake Tahoe Community College and the 2014 SnowGlobe. By 8 p.m., 12,000 people were already at the concert. Many walked, parked nearby or took advantage of the shuttle busses provided by the event planners and the City.

"They have done a good job on signs, parking shuttles, sound and security," said South Lake Tahoe City Manager Nancy Kerry of the event planners. "Sound levels have been on target and below."

The Veterans Affairs Commission awarded the Food Bank of El Dorado County $9,000.00 through its El Dorado Veterans Fund at El Dorado Community Foundation to support its No Vet Goes Hungry Program. The Food Bank’s No Vet Goes Hungry Program is a homebound delivery of nutritious emergency supplemental groceries to ensure no veteran goes hungry in El Dorado County. This program will provide veterans food and other information regarding resources available to them from other veterans programs and services in the county.

Utility trailers have become a popular target of thieves recently in South Lake Tahoe. Over the last few weeks almost a dozen trailers of all sizes have been stolen from homes and businesses.

Cardinale Way Toyota had a single car hauler stolen from their lot, a utility company had a trailer stolen, as have local contractors and residents.

A couple of trailers have been recovered, apparently ditched according to South Lake Tahoe Police Lt. Josh Adler.

A brush fire started just after 6:45 p.m. Wednesday night in the hills above Carson City between Jacks Valley Road and Clear Creek Road. Fire officials are calling it the Clear Creek Fire and it had burned 150 acres as of 9:45 p.m. The area is not easily accessible. Hot Shots were dropped onto the hills nearby to fight the fire as well as drops from three air tankers and two helicopters. Hand crews will stay on the fire during the night.

The fire was started by lightning and the region saw dozens more lightning strikes into the evening.

The chemical treatment of invasive plants by the U.S. Forest Service in Lake Tahoe will continue through the summer at about 70 different locations totaling 12.5 acres. In South Lake Tahoe the treatment will take place at the Angora wildfire area, Baldwin Beach meadow, Burke Creek trail, Luther Pass campground, Heavenly Creek Meadow, Heavenly Ski Area, Rabe Meadow and the Spooner Summit fire station as well as at several urban lots that the Forest Service controls.

While clarity improved at Lake Tahoe for a second straight year in 2012, long-term trends show that climate change is impacting the Lake Tahoe Basin with drier years, less precipitation, higher lake temperatures and projected lower lake levels.

These conclusions are found within the lake's annual health exam,"Tahoe: State of the Lake Report 2013," released today by the Tahoe Environmental Research Center at the University of California, Davis.

National recognition has been given to the Lake Tahoe Aquatic Invasive Species watercraft inspection program once again, this time for the excellence of the public outreach campaign used to educate boaters about the program.

The campaign, directed by the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency and Tahoe Resource Conservation District, received a Silver Anvil award Thursday from the Public Relations Society of America—the nation’s most prestigious public relations award.

South Lake Tahoe, Calif. – Someone’s stealing copper from Forest Service facilities on the South Shore, and the agency’s turning to the public for help in stopping the costly crimes. The thieves have targeted restrooms at Kiva Picnic Area, Fallen Leaf Campground, and Pope and Baldwin beaches, vandalizing the buildings in their attempts to access the copper pipes in the plumbing and sell them for scrap metal. Several of the restrooms had been newly constructed over the past few years.

Two instances of credit card fraud at the Carson Valley Target store on Jacks Valley Road in early January has Douglas County authorities asking for the public's help.

On Jan. 2 and again Jan. 4 the man in these two photos entered the Target store and allegedly used fraudulent credit cards to obtain an undisclosed amount of merchandise, said Sgt. Pat Brooks in a Douglas County Sheriff's Office news release. The man is considered a "person of interest" in the case.

Sierra Resort at Lake Tahoe is proud to maintain their tradition of supporting the community this holiday season and donate canned food to The Food Bank of El Dorado County. Titled CANucopia, Sierra Resort is encouraging guests to bring canned non-perishable foods such as canned soup, dried pasta, crackers, and pasta sauce to the collection bin located at the base of the mountain next to the season pass office until January 12, 2013.

For the first time in California's history of Academic Performance Index testing, the majority of schools met or surpassed the state API target of 800 points, state officials announced last week.
