A $10,000 grant to help the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority develop its sports tourism initiative was among nearly a half-million dollars in rural tourism grants announced Tuesday. As the Silver State enters what appears to be another record-breaking ski season at Lake Tahoe and the Sierra, the Nevada Commission on Tourism has launched an ad campaign geared at winter enthusiasts in several key markets, Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki announced Wednesday.

Nevada tourism leaders trying to figure out the best way to brand the Silver State to attract visitors may have a bigger challenge on their hands than they thought. Six focus groups in San Francisco, Los Angeles and Salt Lake City, demonstrated little knowledge of the Silver State and its tourism attractions including Lake Tahoe, reports the Las Vegas Sun. Nevada will host 18 contestants from all over the world who are competing in the Miss Chinese Cosmos Semi-Finals, Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki, chair of the Nevada Commission on Tourism, announced today in a press release.

The event will take place in Reno and Lake Tahoe from Sept. 23-30, 2011. The contest moves around the world each year, last year taking place in Sydney, Australia. This is the first time the pageant has been held in the United States.

League to Save Lake Tahoe Executive Director Rochelle Nason has resigned today, effective October 2011, after nearly 20 years of working to protect and restore Lake Tahoe.

League Program Director Carl Young will serve as interim executive director, with Nason serving as a senior advisor, until a new executive director has been selected.
