SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - For the past 27 years, Frank Kovac has been with the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD).

When he landed in South Lake Tahoe Kovac already had spent time teaching at Fairfax High School, Emerson Junior High, James Rutter Middle School, and Paul Revere Middle School, but he found his niche beginning locally at South Tahoe Middle School.

After one year at STMS Kovac took the position as athletics and activities director at South Tahoe High School (STHS), a position he held for five years.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Even though the end of the school year is taking on a new appearance, the academic successes of the students at South Tahoe High School (STHS) are still being celebrated.

Nancy Garcia Corea is the valedictorian for the Class os 2020 at STHS. She carries a 4.6154 GPA and is headed off the Stanford University when school begins in the fall. Nancy will be studying sociology and wants to go to law school with the goal of becoming a defense attorney.

South Lake Tahoe native Kylee Lyons was honored with the Distinguished Appointed Board Award, First Place in Mei Po Wong Overall Service, and Second Place in Outstanding Total Service Hours at the California-Nevada-Hawaii Circle K International (CKI) District Convention this past weekend in Los Angeles. Lyons was the 2018-2019 Small-Scale Service Chair of the CKI chapter at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where she is studying to obtain a bachelor's degree in Psychobiology, aspiring to become a Physician Assistant.

A South Lake Tahoe man won gold in the Heavyweight Para-Division of the Abu-Dhabi Grand Slam Jiu-Jitsu Tournament recently in Los Angeles.

Ryan Wallace, who we've written many stories about over the last four years, competed against para-athletes from around the world for the second consecutive year at the tournament. In 2017 Wallace won the silver medal and he spent the last year working tirelessly to improve, capping his 2018 performance with a hard fought 7-0 victory.

"I was grateful for the opportunity to demonstrate that improvement," said Wallace.

A new chapter for Lake Tahoe Community College started Thursday, 32 years after ground broke on the South Lake Tahoe campus, moving the school from an old motel into a new home on Al Tahoe Blvd. Construction is now complete on the $5.8M Lisa Maloff University Center and the doors are open, ready to welcome students enrolled in upper division classes with Sierra Nevada College, Brandman University and Washington State.

On August 16, a groundbreaking ceremony was held to officially open the center, located adjacent to Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC).

UCLA has the Bruin, USC has Tommy Trojan, and now Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) has the Coyote. Just in time for graduation, LTCC's completed Coyote Legacy Plaza was unveiled to a group of community members, trustees, board members and donors Monday.

The plaza sits between the Physical Education building and the soccer field and displays engraved pavers with donors names on them, surrounding the bronze coyote jumping a log sitting on top of a brick bed.

College hockey is returning to South Lake Tahoe as the UCLA Bruins attempt to defend their PAC championship upset when they lit up the Tahoe Arena last year. Hitting the ice will also be Cal Berkeley, University of Washington, University of Oregon, UCLA and Arizona State.

It took just minutes to fill up Lake Tahoe Aleworx Taproom & Pizzeria Thursday when they opened their doors officially for the first time. Friends, family, firemen and those looking for a great selection of beer and wood-fired pizza all came to see what the newest spot to open in South Lake Tahoe was all about.

Housed in the former Factory Stores at the Y, Aleworx is the first of two restaurants that will make their home at the new Crossing at Tahoe Valley.

Dr. Annie Davidson filed Thursday to run for school board member of the Lake Tahoe Unified School District serving Trustee Area 1.

Former South Lake Tahoe City Manager David Jinkens is headed south to the city of Avalon to take on the same position for that city on Santa Catalina Island, one that he held in the 1980s.

Jinkens was the SLT City Manager from August 2002 until August 2010 when he retired after 35 year of service as a City CEO. Now, he's headed back to where he and wife Terri lived and worked when they were first married.

Raul E. Moreno Campos, a doctoral candidate and teaching fellow at UCLA’s Department of Political Science, will be at Lake Tahoe Community College on Tuesday, May 26 at 12 p.m. Campos will give a presentation on “State-Sponsored Violence, U.S. Imperialism, and the Salvadoran Civil War” in the LTCC Commons, inside the main building. This is a free event, and the community is welcome and encouraged to participate.

If you're like me and haven't been following the University of Alabama-Birminghamd (UAB) basketball team all season, but finally caught a game dring March Madness, you might be wondering, "Why do they wear one green shoe and one white shoe?"

Collegiate hockey is headed to South Lake Tahoe February 6 through 8 when the Pac-8 Championship is held at the SLT Ice Arena.

Defending 2014 co-champs Arizona State ended the season in first with a 9-1 record but will not be attending this weekend's tournament due to disciplinary action. “The Arizona State PAC-8 team has declined the invitation to participate in this year’s tournament due to a team rule violation," according to the Pac-8 website.

Heavenly Mountain Resort at Lake Tahoe honored five recipients of the Heavenly Mountain Resort Community Scholarship Program at a luncheon Wednesday at Tamarack Lodge, located at the top of the Heavenly Gondola.
For the ninth consecutive year, Heavenly Mountain Resort awarded $4,000 scholarships to five recent high school graduates, bringing the resort’s overall commitment to the Heavenly Mountain Resort Community Scholarship Program to $180,000. The scholarships are designed to help further the education of local area students.
