SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue recently held ceremonies for the hiring of three new firefighter/paramedics and the promotion of three to the rank of captain. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, ceremonies were small and held at the fire station during their shifts.

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - The Tahoe Fire and Fuels Team is promoting Lake Tahoe Wildfire Awareness Month during July. This year’s theme is “Fight fire with a plan” to encourage residents and visitors to prepare their family, property and possessions now before a wildfire starts by creating a plan.

Some ways to plan include:

Develop a family evacuation plan.
Assemble a Go-bag and a disaster supply kit for your home and vehicle.
Create and maintain defensible space around homes.
Sign up for emergency notifications for residents and visitors and stay informed.

The Nevada Air Guard High Rollers will be honoring the men and women in healthcare who are battling COVID-19 by doing a flyover of Lake Tahoe and Northern Nevada area hospitals with a C-130 on Tuesday, April 28, 2020.

152nd Airlift Wing will start from its base in Reno and pass over Renown South Medical Center at noon, and for an hour pass over the following hospitals.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE Update 7:20 p.m. 3/20/20 - The University of Nevada Reno Seismological Lab has updated the magnitude of tonight's earthquake to 4.5. It centered near Lake Tahoe in Indian Hills, Nevada.

Since the initial earthquake, there have been four aftershocks at 2.0, 1.6, 1.6, 1.5 and more are expected.

The 4.5 was 4.3 mi SSE of Carson_City at a depth of 8.38 km.

These follow a series of small earthquakes in the same area at the beginning of the week.

NORTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The University of Nevada Seismological Lab is reporting a 2.9 earthquake on Friday, October 25 at 6:54 a.m. Centered six miles NNE of Tahoe City, the earthquake was 9km deep.

In the area of Bordertown, northwest of Reno, there has been a series of 38 small earthquakes since Thursday, October 24 at 3:00 p.m., all under a magnitude of 1.

On October 23 Incline Village experienced another small quake, one measuring 1.0 and another small one in between Incline Village and Tahoe City just prior to the 2.9.

Sen. Bernie Sanders will return to Nevada on Friday, September 13th to host a town hall in Carson City, followed by a rally at the University of Nevada, Reno campus.

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - What a difference a year can make! In 2018, the annual test of Lake Tahoe's clarity value made a drastic change and improved to 70.9 feet. This is 10.5 more feet than was seen in 2017.

In the release of their annual report, the UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center (TERC) in Incline Village said a return to more normal weather and streamflow conditions was responsible for this change.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Tetrachloroethylene (PCE) was found in drinking water wells in South Lake Tahoe near the "Y" in 1989, and it remains in the groundwater today, forming a containment plume from the intersection of Highway 50 and State Route 89 and heading toward Lake Tahoe through the Tahoe Keys.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - On the heels of the banning of electric scooters in many cities, Governor Jerry Brown of California has signed a bill that mandates helmets for users only if they are under the age of 18 and if the scooter goes above 15 miles per hour.

The bill, authored by Republican Assemblyman Heath Flora of Ripon, was written to encourage scooter use to alleviate congestion on the state's roads and meet climate change goals of reducing car emissions.

The law takes effect Jan. 1, 2019.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Did you feel it? A 4.1 earthquake centered at Dollar Point on the North Shore of Lake Tahoe occurred at 3:09 p.m. on Thursday, August 30, 2018. This follows two from earlier in the day near Mt. Rose, a 2.0 and 1.0.

It was at a depth of 7.82 km according to the Nevada Seismological Department at the University of Nevada Reno.

People near Cameron Park are reporting they felt the earthquake as well.

A new chapter for Lake Tahoe Community College started Thursday, 32 years after ground broke on the South Lake Tahoe campus, moving the school from an old motel into a new home on Al Tahoe Blvd. Construction is now complete on the $5.8M Lisa Maloff University Center and the doors are open, ready to welcome students enrolled in upper division classes with Sierra Nevada College, Brandman University and Washington State.

On August 16, a groundbreaking ceremony was held to officially open the center, located adjacent to Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC).

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Imagine you're ten years old and have just been diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. A series of small earthquakes have been centered around the Tahoe City, California area, the largest being measured at 3.51 early Thursday morning according to data from the Nevada Seismological Laboratory on the University of Nevada campus.

At 12:22 a.m. on July 26, the small trembler hit 5.8 miles NNE of Tahoe City at a depth of 5.7 miles.

Nine other, much smaller quakes have occurred in the last 12 hours, 17 total in the past 10 days. One year ago there was a little swarm in the same area, with 28 minor quakes ranging from a magnitude of 0.6. to 3.7.

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) has a new deputy on board.

Dustin Clifford took the oath of office on July 2 during a ceremony with family and friends.

The new deputy was born and raised in Reno graduating from McQueen High School. After graduation he attended and graduated from the University of Nevada Reno with a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice.

Clifford enjoys the outdoors by hiking, fishing and hunting and is ready to begin his career with DCSO. He will be assigned to the Jail Division under the leadership of Captain Jim Halsey.

Author Peter Goin will be presenting a slideshow ahighlighting his latest book, Emerald Bay and Desolation Wilderness, in the Baldwin Museum at the Pope Baldwin Estates in South Lake Tahoe.

The Tahoe Heritage Foundation and Lake Tahoe Historical Society are presenting the evening's activities on Saturday, June 20 at 5:00 p.m.

Goin is the recipient of two National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships and is currently a Foundation Professor of Art in Photography and Videography at the University of Nevada, Reno.

There have been several earthquakes north of Lake Tahoe today, starting with one that measured 3.1 at 12:32 a.m. Wednesday.

According to the Nevada State Seismology Lab at the University of Nevada Reno, there have been 12 more tremblers as of 1:20 p.m. All are between five miles north of Mt. Rose and Interstate 80.

The Sierra Nevada and Western Nevada experience several earthquakes annually, and in recent years those numbers have been over 22,000 each year, with most of them under 1.0. So far in 2018 there have been over 6,000 measurable events.
