Washoe County Marine 9 rescues couple from Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Fri, 06/19/2020 - 1:32pmINCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. - Washoe County deputies on board Marine 9 found a couple clinging to a deflated raft on Lake Tahoe around 3:00 p.m. Thursday, June 18.
Deputies aboard the boat were patrolling just northwest of the Thunderbird Lodge on the east shore when they spotted a number of items, including paddles and shoes, floating on the lake.
New Lake Tahoe Water Trail Map released for 2019 paddling season

The Sierra Business Council has just released the 2019 Lake Tahoe Water Trail Map & Access Guide to help paddlers safely find their way along the water route. It pinpoints all of the 37 public launch and landing sites, including the Lake Tahoe Water Trail's 20 trailhead sites with wayfinding signage, restrooms and parking.
Water safety Instructor and Lifeguard classes to begin soon in South Lake Tahoe

Offered by the American Red Cross, both classes are open to community members and will be taught at the Recreation and Swim Complex.
Lake Tahoe Water Trail - "72 miles of pure liquid fun"

The Lake Tahoe Water Trail has been in place since 2003 and is a designated water route along the 72-mile shoreline that connects public launch/landing sites to help paddlers have a safe, responsible, and fun recreation experience while practicing good stewardship that protects the watershed.
The connect users to the trail, a newly designed website has been launched with paddle routes listed that match abilities and interests, navigation tools, and water safety tips.
State schools chief visits California's smallest district - Alpine County
Submitted by paula on Tue, 09/25/2018 - 11:49pmCalifornia's State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson is wrapping up his final term by touring some of the state's schools.
In just a few days he went from visiting a school in Los Angeles with an enrollment of 4,000 to touring Alpine County Schools and the Diamond Valley Elementary School campus, in particular, which has 80 students from kindergarten through eighth grade.
“It is a small school in numbers but mighty in its focus and learning,” said Torlakson in Alpine County on Sept. 20.
California man drowns in Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Sun, 08/05/2018 - 7:02pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The body of a 21-year-old California man was located in Lake Tahoe Sunday afternoon, more than 24 hours after he jumped off a boat near Edgewood Tahoe.
El Dorado County Sheriff's Office cadaver dogs alerted others to the body of the man about one-quarter mile off shore between Tahoe Meadows and Lakeside Marina just before 5:00 p.m. Sunday, according to South Lake Tahoe Police Officer Traci Trapani.
The identity of the man is being withheld pending notification of next-of-kin.
South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue to christen Ms. Lisa on Monday

Financed by a generous donation by local philanthropist Lisa Maloff, the new water safety rescue boat bears her name.
Reward offered to find who illegally reintroduced pike to Comins Lake

The voracious predator has again been illegally planted in the lake south of Ely, Nevada.
El Dorado County appoints two new directors for reorganized departments

Both men were interim directors as the departments were being reorganized and the search for director was underway.

"People are very excited to get on the water," said Edwin Lyngar, Nevada Department of Wildlife's (NDOW) Water Educator. "Take safety precautions as you can't depend on luck."
Lyngar as well as both California and Nevada water safety experts were at Sand Harbor last week to inform the public about how easy it is to be safe on the water.

With a very high lake level, and overflowing rivers, caution and safety are urged to have a fabulous weekend in Lake Tahoe.
And they aren't only going to be dealing with water safety. Rules and regulations along the beaches will also be enforced for safety reasons.

Deaths in Lake Tahoe attributed to cold water shock, not hypothermia
Submitted by paula on Tue, 06/28/2016 - 8:20pm"Swim Smart, Swim Safe: know the dangers of cold water" is the message coming from agencies responsible for boating and water safety on Lake Tahoe, especially after the recent deaths in the lake of two healthy men.
Drowning incidents from boating, paddling and swimming often share the same cause, "cold water shock," an involuntary gasp reflex caused by sudden immersion in cold water. Swimmers and boaters suddenly exposed to the cold waters of Lake Tahoe may experience rapid breathing, gasping, fainting, muscle failure and immediate risk of drowning.

City offering water safety and lifeguard classes in South Lake Tahoe

The American Red Cross Blended Learning Water Safety Instructor Class and participants must register for this class by April 28 at www.cslt.sportssignup.com. American Red Cross Certified Instructor Larry Phippen will be teaching the calls that trains candidates to teach courses and presentations in the Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety Program.
