Sugar Bowl Resort and Royal Gorge Cross Country will open for the 2020/21 winter season on Friday, November 27, 2020 with new safety procedures.
“We are eager to welcome our guests back to the mountain and are thrilled that opening day is just a week away,” said Greg Dallas, President and CEO of Sugar Bowl/Royal Gorge. “Our team has worked tirelessly on a reopening plan that keeps the safety of our guests and staff as the top priority.”

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Even though the 70s have been great temperatures for the past few weeks, it was inevitable that the weather patterns would change just as daylight saving time did. A strong cold front will push through the Sierra and western Nevada on Friday bringing gusty winds, much colder temperatures, and chances for rain and snow showers, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

8:30 p.m. SUNDAY UPDATE: The Loyalton Fire which originated east of the town of Loyalton and southwest of Mount Ina Coolbrith is now estimated at 29,828 acres and 0 percent contained. It is north and east adjacent to the areas of Beckwourth Pass and Hallelujah Junction.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Winter Weather Advisory for South Lake Tahoe through Wednesday morning

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Service in Reno issued a Winter Weather Advisory for 4:00 p.m. Tuesday through 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 25.
The only change to the earlier weather forecast is a slight increase in projected snowfall for areas east of SR89.
Total snow accumulations of 2 to 5 inches in South Lake Tahoe with 5 to 10 inches along and west of Highway 89. Local amounts of 10 to 15 inches possible near the crest. They are calling for winds gusting up to 40 mph this afternoon and evening in the greater Lake Tahoe area.

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Ski on the trails made famous in the 1960 Winter Olympics during a free ski day at Ed Z’berg Sugar Pine Point State Park on Saturday, February 2 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
California State Parks and the Sierra State Parks Foundation are bringing back groomed Nordic skiing at the park and have invited the public to enjoy the sport in the same spot the biathlon and cross-country events of the Olympics were held.
The latest round of winter storms has brought in plenty of fresh snow for the park to offer this popular pastime.

With lightning and thunderstorms in the Lake Tahoe forecast for another few days, it's always good to review safety tips when caught in the middle of a storm.
You can protect yourself from risk even if you are caught outdoors when lightning is close by.
Safety precautions outdoors
- If the weather forecast calls for thunderstorms, postpone your trip or activity.
- Remember: When thunder roars, go indoors. Find a safe, enclosed shelter.
Roof collapse in South Lake Tahoe at Harrison Avenue complex

The historic building that housed a liquor store and other businesses in South Lake Tahoe suffered significant damage after a heavy snow load contributed to the collapse of the building's roof early Monday morning.
Nevada starts to clean up after floods; Roads remain closed including Kingsbury Grade

Many roads in Nevada were under water Sunday after torrential rains went through, causing rivers and streams to flood. In Reno alone 50 roads were closed due to high water levels, and all bridges over the Truckee River in Reno were also closed.
The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) spent the day evaluating the state's roads affected by floods and rain. Multiple state roads in the greater Truckee Meadows and Carson Valley areas remain closed, including those in the Sparks industrial area and areas of Reno, including East McCarran Boulevard and South Virginia Street.

The weekend will be more of an umbrella one than a snow boot one as a strong atmospheric river heads to Lake Tahoe. The National Weather Service to issue wind and flood warnings for the South Lake Tahoe area because of the deep moisture levels associated with this river that extends past Hawaii.
Wind advisory up until 4:00 a.m. Saturday, and Lake Wind Advisory from 10:00 a.m. Saturday to 10:00 p.m. Sunday. Strong and gusty winds with waves 2-4'. Winds will be 25-35 mph with gusts up to 50 mph.
Owens River Fire sending smoke into the Lake Tahoe Basin

9/19/16 update 8:00 p.m. - The Owens River Fire has now burned 6,050 acres east of Highway 395 and is now 20 percent contained. The fire is burning southeast of June Lake and northeast of Mammoth Lake.
Perseid meteor shower to put on show in Lake Tahoe/Reno area

Clear skies in western Nevada and the Lake Tahoe basin will provide for some great viewing of the Perseid metero shower this week.
NASA says if you see one meteor shower this year, make it the Perseid meteor shower.
According to the National Weather Service in Reno, the weather forecast during the peak of the shower calls for mostly clear and cool conditions Thursday night into early Friday morning. Low temperatures in the Sierra will be in the mid 30’s to mid 40’s with lows in the 50 to 60 range for the western Nevada.

Here is an update for road conditions and weather forecast for Friday, December 11.
Chain controls are widespread this morning:
At 8 a.m., chains or 4WD with snow tires are required all the way on Highway 50 from Meyers to Pollock Pines.
Chains are required on all vehicles except 4WD with snow tires on Hwy 89 from Pickett's Junction to 2.7 miles south of junction with Highway 50 in Meyers; from 4.5 miles north of Y to Bliss State Park, then chains or snow tires from Bliss State Park to junction of I80.

The long awaited first storm of the winter has hit the Sierra Nevada, much to the excitement of ski resorts, skiers and those wanting an end to the drought.
While this weather front isn't supposed to leave much behind at lake level, the upper elevations may see over a foot of snow.
Here is the updated weather forecast from the National Weather Service:
Today - Rain and snow, becoming all snow after 10am. High near 41. West wind around 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. Total daytime snow accumulation of 1 to 2 inches possible.

Scattered afternoon thunderstorms are expected through the 4th of July holiday weekend for the Sierra and western Nevada. Heavy rain with localized flash flooding will be possible in some areas of the Sierra and surrounding valleys.
The National Weather Service in Reno has said to expect abundant lightning, small hail, erratic wind gusts up to 50 mph, and rapid drops in temperatures. Temperatures can quickly drop by 30 to 40 degrees under thunderstorms in combination with very heavy rain, which poses a hypothermia threat to those outdoors.
Washington Fire now 56% contained; 17,787 acres burned

6:00 p.m. update 6/29/15
Firefighters made a lot of progress on the fire lines at the Washington Fire south of Markleeville on Monday, gaining containment of 56% of the perimeter. So far, 17,787 acres have burned.
The lightning caused fire grew quickly a week ago, from 30 acres on June 19 to 6,500 acres by June 21.
At one time, over 1,100 fire personnel were working on suppression of the fire. Those numbers were reduced today to 860 as containment grew.

Tonight - Mostly clear, with a low around 44. Breezy, with a southwest wind 15 to 20 mph decreasing to 5 to 10 mph in the evening. Winds could gust as high as 30 mph.
Monday - Sunny, with a high near 77. Southwest wind 5 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph.
Monday Night - Clear, with a low around 44. West wind 10 to 15 mph decreasing to 5 to 10 mph in the evening. Winds could gust as high as 25 mph.
Who needs snow for snowshoe cocktail race finale?

In true Tahoe fashion, a lack of snow has brought out the creative planning by the organizers of the annual Camp Richardson Snowshoe Cocktail Race. The popular race will take place on the beach in front of the Beacon Bar and Grill. If the weather forecast holds out, the race will be on sand instead of snow.
Racers will go head to head in the finale of Camp Richardson’s Snowshoe Cocktail Races March 21 at 7 p.m., with registration starting at 5 p.m.

A few inches of snow fell at Lake Tahoe ski areas, bringing out skiers and riders in droves for Christmas Day fun.
There is a chance of under an inch snow on the first day of SnowGlobe, Monday, December 29, but other than that the two week forecast is clear and cold.
Per Accuweather, the following is forecast for South Lake Tahoe:
Friday, December 26 - Sunny with a High of 32, Low 10
Saturday, December 27 - Mostly Sunny with a High of 41, Low of 20
Sunday, December 28 - Some sun with a high of 41, Low of 18

A new storm is headed to the California coast Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday. It will bring with it valley rain and mountain snow.
According to a report by the National Weather Service in Reno, several feet of snow is possible in the Sierra above 7,000 feet with significant travel impacts possible over Sierra passes.
There is more uncertainty below 7,000 feet due to weather forecast model snow level variations, so a light accumulation down to 6,000 feet is not out of the question. All of their forecasts report little to no snow at lake level.

Free public fire wood gathering will again be available at the Wrights Lake Recreation Area on the Eldorado National Forest to this weekend, November 8-9. “This weekend’s weather forecast is favorable,” stated Richard Thornburgh, Pacific District Ranger. “We feel this is a perfect opportunity to continue cleaning up the area by allowing people to take home free firewood.” The Recreation Area was hit by a severe wind storm almost a year ago, causing more than 200 trees to fall.
Update: Over 3,500 acres burned in Yosemite fire

7/29/14 11:30 p.m. update: The El Portal Fire burning near Yosemite is now 34% contained. Firefighters gained good ground on all sides of the fire except for the northern portion which has caused concern for fire officials. Steep, rugged terrain continues to challenge the efforts of firefighters but progress is being made. The weather forecast calls for continued high temperatures reaching as high as 100 degrees near El Portal.
At this point in time 3,545 acres have burned. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.

Firefighters get better handle on Kyburz Fire overnight, 40 percent contained
Submitted by Editor on Tue, 07/09/2013 - 8:56amFirefighters made significant progress on the Kyburz Fire overnight, which is now 40 percent contained and remains at 160 acres as of Tuesday morning, said U.S. Forest Service spokeswoman Laura Hierholzer.
The size of the Kyburz Fire, west of South Lake Tahoe in the Sierra, was adjusted from 600 acres down to 160 acres on Monday night because of better mapping, she said. Overnight the firefighters were able to get a better handle on it and stop the spread. A second outbuilding was listed as damaged or destroyed.

Thursday's X-Class solar flare could bring Northern Lights to Northern California, according to the National Weather Service in Eureka.
All eyes are on the solar wind data to note the expected passage on Saturday of a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) from Thursday's solar event. NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) expects G1 (minor) with the chance of attaining G2 (moderate) Geomagnetic Storm activity after 6 a.m. California time on Saturday, July 14.
Heat returns to the Lake Tahoe and Western Nevada weather forecast this week

A large area of high pressure will expand westward bringing high temperatures 8 to 12 degrees above normal this week, with mid 70s to low 90s over the Lake Tahoe Basin and Sierra, with mid 90s to 108 degrees in Western Nevada valleys below 5,000 feet.
While hardly the broiling heat wave experienced last week in the northeast, the change will be noticeable, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.
