Expect to see smoke in the area of Pioneer Trail and Al Tahoe Boulevard starting Friday, October 18 due to prescribed burns being conducted by the U.S. Forest Service fuel management crews. They expect to burn one acre a day for about a week, depending on weather and conditions.

Cooler temperatures with a 30% chance of rain and snow showers are in the South Lake Tahoe forecast this week. A small amount (under one inch) of snow is expected at lake level on Wednesday with up to a couple of inches due at higher elevations according to the National Weather Report.

The weather system is a quick one as sunny and clear skies with a forecast of 61 degrees on Tuesday and 51 degrees on Thursday.

Weekend weather in South Lake Tahoe will be fall like with highs near 60s.

On October 1, boat inspections will move to select launch ramps and winter hours will begin. Tahoe RCD (Resource Conservation District) inspectors will be stationed at Cave Rock and Lake Forest boat launches from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. seven days a week, weather permitting. Boats with attached Lake Tahoe wire inspection seals and valid Tahoe inspection stickers will be permitted to launch during these times, but any unsealed boats are required to get an inspection during daylight hours.

Temperatures into the 40s and a chance of snow is in the forecast for Wednesday and Thursday in the Lake Tahoe region. Cloudy skies are expected on Wednesday with scattered showers. The snow level will be just above lake level at 6500 to 7000 ft on Wednesday with wind gusts in the morning expected to 55 mph over the ridges.

Thursday's forecast calls for a chance of snow showers in the morning with sunny skies in the afternoon. The snow level will be 7000 ft and ridge wind gusts at 50 mph.

The cooler weather will be replaced by the weekend by temperatures in the low 70s.

Sunday is the first day of Fall and the change of seasons is bringing cooler temperatures with it to the Lake Tahoe region. But, how chilly it will get is differing between the popular weather forecasters.

Accuweather.com says the temperatures for Friday, Saturday and Sunday will be 72,60,62 respectively. Wunderground.com has the temperatures as 70,52 and 63 while weather.com states 74, 58 and 66.

There is a 50% chance of rain on Saturday night which may bring snow to elevations over 8,000 feet above sea level.

As the chairlifts at Kirkwood Mountain Resort came to a halt this past spring, the Snow Park Technologies (SPT) snowcats were powering up. For twenty days, an SPT crew of seven logged 1,200 hours building the slopestyle course of Bobby Brown’s dreams. Three years ago the professional skier, who is based in Denver, CO, was asking friends, “What’s next for slopestyle skiing?” The result is Red Bull Megaslope, a 2,750-foot long course that flawlessly incorporates six epic features winding across the natural terrain of the mountain.

While clarity improved at Lake Tahoe for a second straight year in 2012, long-term trends show that climate change is impacting the Lake Tahoe Basin with drier years, less precipitation, higher lake temperatures and projected lower lake levels.

These conclusions are found within the lake's annual health exam,"Tahoe: State of the Lake Report 2013," released today by the Tahoe Environmental Research Center at the University of California, Davis.

UPDATE: 7:17PM: Around 200 firefighters remain on scene tonight on the Kings fire on the Carson Valley side of Kingsbury Grade near Lake Tahoe. The fire is approximately 4 to 5 acres in size, Douglas County authorities report. Containment is estimated by 8 p.m.

A strong thunderstorm has moved into the Lake Tahoe area Sunday afternoon producing thunder and lightning strikes, according to a weather advisory issued by the National Weather Service in Reno.

Boaters and swimmer on or near Lake Tahoe should get out of the water and move indoors or inside a vehicle, the weather service urges.

The storm was moving northward and could cause dangerous cloud to ground lightning and winds of 40 mph. The affected areas are South Lake Tahoe, Zephyr Cove and Glenbrook.

Lake Tahoe fire protection agencies all agree: defensible space isn’t a bunch of hot air. To back up the importance of defensible space, they’re organizing a free Wildfire Awareness Week kick-off event that includes free tethered Smokey Bear hot air balloon rides (weather permitting), firefighter photo opportunities, a pancake breakfast and more on Saturday, May 25th from 8am – 12pm outside MontBleu Resort Casino and Spa.

U.S. Forest Service fuels management crews will begin prescribed fire operations on the west shore of Lake Tahoe beginning Monday, April 22. Crews expect to burn approximately 50 acres in the Ward Canyon area, south of Tahoe City. Operations may continue through the week, weather and conditions permitting.

Residents and visitors can expect to see smoke from this prescribed fire project area. Smoke may be visible on Highway 89.

A strong cold front will move through the Sierra and Western Nevada beginning Sunday night bringing cold weather and periods of snow showers to Lake Tahoe through Monday, the National Weather Service reports.

The City of South Lake Tahoe opened the Bijou Golf Course for the season Monday, marking the earliest opening day in its history.

“We’ve never had the opportunity to open this early due to seasonal weather, so we are very excited to have these Spring conditions early in the year so that the golfers can start early,” said Parks Supervisor Greg Ross.

The golf course will remain open subject to weather closures for the rest of the season. Current residential rates are $15 for 9 holes and $12 for 9 holes at twilight.

Fifteen students from San Diego State University will forego the typical spring break of beaches and relaxation to teach thousands of children in a small mountain community how to save energy and save the environment.

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency on Thursday announced the 2012 Best in the Basin award winners and will recognize the recipients March 27 at the TRPA governing board meeting.
