Big fish caught at Lake Tahoe

This report is for the week of Dec. 12-18. We want to note a big fish caught by Eric St. Denis of South Lake Tahoe, Calif., pictured above. Eric caught a 28-pound, 9-ounce Mackinaw trout at Lake Tahoe on Dec. 9, at 10:30 a.m. Photos courtesy of Gene St. Denis of Blue Ribbon Charters.
The Lake Tahoe record for Mackinaw Trout is a 37-pound, 6-ounce (44 inches in length) trophy caught by Robert Aronsen, way back in 1974. To date, only a handful of Macks have been caught that have weighed 30 pounds or more.
Prescribed fire set for Tuesday on south and east shores of Lake Tahoe

Crews expect to burn two acres at each location, weather permitting. Operations will continue as weather and conditions allow.
Christmas tree cutting permits sell out across Lake Tahoe Basin, continue on BLM land

Heavenly at Lake Tahoe opens Olympic Express and Downhill, new snow on the way

With a new weather system moving in, the resort expects between six to eight inches of snow up top on Wednesday and will be opening additional terrain as the week progresses.

How much snow associated with the storm, which is dropping out of the Gulf of Alaska, is unclear but there are a couple of scenarios that may play out according to the map above.
Reservations begin Dec. 17 for Winter Trek Express at Lake Tahoe

Teachers may reserve a spot by calling the Forest Service front desk at (530) 543-2694, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.
Winter Trek Express is a 5th-grade environmental education program that takes place at Heavenly Mountain Resort via the gondola. Forest Service rangers lead the class through the wilderness to learn snowshoe skills and discover winter adapting animals.
Prescribed fire resumes Monday on West Shore Lake Tahoe

Fog settles in Lake Tahoe and nearby valleys through the morning

The National Weather Service in Reno reports visibility could drop below one mile with a few areas of dense fog and visibility below 1/4 of a mile early Thursday morning. Fog will begin to burn off after 8 a.m., and may linger in a few valleys until 11 a.m.
Prescribed fire operations begin Wednesday on Lake Tahoe's West Shore

Coupled headed for Douglas County from California are reported missing

Roderick Paul Clifton, 44, of Citrus Heights, and also listed as being from Gardnerville and Paula Lane, 46, also of Gardnerville, were reported missing by relatives when they didn't answer their cellphones and didn't return to Nevada by that night, according to Citrus Heights Police Department Det. Sgt. Lee Harrington.
Lake Tahoe under Winter Storm Warning as storm blows into region
Submitted by Editor on Sun, 12/02/2012 - 12:30pmAs rain turns to snow in the Sierra a Winter Storm Warning has been issued by the National Weather Service for the Lake Tahoe Basin.
Snow levels are rapidly dropping as cold air associated with this latest storm drops into the basin.
Snow is expected below 7,000 feet this morning with periods of heavy snow in the afternoon. Snow accumulations of 10 to 16 inches are expected above 7,000 feet with 4 to 8 inches at lake level. At least two feet is expected above 8,000 feet.

Rain, wind and snow to blast Lake Tahoe through weekend

The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a Winter Weather Advisory and Wind Advisory from 10 Thursday night through 4 p.m. Friday for areas above 7,000 feet. For the first wave of a series of three storms, anywhere between 8 to 16 inches of snow is expected around 7,000 feet and above and between 2 to 3 feet above 8,000 feet.

Lake Tahoe resorts prepare as series of winter storms begin

Thanks to the highest elevations in the Sierra, it is currently snowing at Heavenly, Kirkwood at Sierra-at-Tahoe, the resorts report.

Prescribed fires planned Wednesday for east and west shores of Lake Tahoe

Crews expect to burn as many acres as possible before the predicted rain storm moves into the Lake Tahoe Basin. Operations in Ward Canyon are expected to last one day, weather permitting.

"Gino" has fished Tahoe for some 30 years and is one of the top, if not the top, fishing guides at that lake.
Sigh, and as usual on that day, Man's Favorite Sport belonged to Elaine for the fourth straight year!

Windy with some snow expected for the Lake Tahoe Basin

Well, maybe not that dramatic but there is the potential for some gusty gusts and big waves along the shores of Lake Tahoe over the next 24 hours or so.
The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a Wind Advisory and Lake Wind Advisory for the Lake Tahoe Basin through Wednesday morning.
More Lake Tahoe resorts set to open for Thanksgiving weekend

There will be seven Lake Tahoe ski resorts open on Thanksgiving day and one more – Homewood ski resort – will open on Friday.

Thursday’s long-term forecast issued by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration calls for both drier and warmer-than-normal conditions for western Nevada and the Sierra in December, January and February – the most critical months when it comes to winter snowfall.

The first of two low pressure systems will bring some snow to the Sierra beginning late Thursday night into Friday. The second and wetter system should arrive late Saturday night or Sunday with periods of heavy snow possible for the Lake Tahoe Basin, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.
Models have been mixed and the weather service hasn't suggested snow amounts from these storms.

Permits cost $10 each (cash or check only, no credit cards) with a limit of two permits per family. Permit holders may choose from a variety of pine, fir or cedar in designated cutting areas and must abide by specific permit conditions for proper and responsible collection. Harvesting smaller diameter trees offers residents and visitors a traditional holiday experience while helping to thin the forest.

The strong cold front has moved into the Lake Tahoe area with snow levels expected down to the valley floors. Snowfall will be the heaviest Thursday night with lake effect snow bands possible on the east side of Lake Tahoe and in the Carson Range on Friday night as well as southeast of Pyramid Lake.

A winter storm is expected later this week that will bring strong winds, much colder temperatures and 5 to 10 inches of snow to the Lake Tahoe Basin, the Sierra and possibly 2 to 5 inches on the valley floors of Western Nevada. A strong cold front will push through the region Thursday dropping temperatures 15 to 20 degrees below normal by Friday through the weekend, according to the National Weather Service in Reno. Rain, snow showers in the Lake Tahoe area forecast for Thursday
Submitted by Editor on Tue, 10/30/2012 - 11:16amGusty winds and low humidity ahead of a low pressure system has prompted the National Weather Service in Reno to issue a Fire Weather Watch for Wednesday that includes the western Sierra front. Some rain and high elevation snow is expected as the system pulls through but the Lake Tahoe Basin but doesn't appear to be in a zone where forecasters believe there will be significant accumulation.
Two more chipmunks test positive for plague in South Lake Tahoe area

One of the chipmunks was found in the Tallac Historic Site area and one was near the U.S. Forest Service Taylor Creek Visitor Center.
