Judi McCallum leaves her El Dorado County post to pursue passions

For the past 26 years, Judi McCallum has been keeping the El Dorado County Supervisors from Lake Tahoe organized, on schedule, and connected to those they serve.

"I have had such a great run as a Supervisor's Assistant at the County of El Dorado Board of Supervisors doing exactly what I love most, helping people," McCallum told South Tahoe Now during her first hour of retirement.

Since 1991 she has worked for four District V Supervisors, with 18 elected Supervisors down the hallway, more than 10 Chief Administrators or Interims, and 1,600 "amazing" county employees.

Tahoe Douglas Rotary holds 49th annual St. Patrick's Day Celebration

The Tahoe Douglas Rotary Club is holding their 49th annual St. Patrick's Day Celebration at the Harrah's Lake Tahoe Convention Center from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. on Friday, March 17.

It started with a wine and cheese party on the second floor of Dart Liquor and it has morphed over the years into one of the top annual fundraisers on the South Shore.

600 people are expected at the evening full of food, fun, dancing and drinking, all in the name of community to raise funds for the Tahoe Douglas Rotary Club's scholarships and grant programs.

Kenneth Carl Rollston 1944 - 2017

Kenneth Carl Rollston died on January 3, 2017 while on a trip to Monterey.

He is survived by his wife Nancy Carpenter Rollston; his sisters Joanne, Garol, Lynne, and Marci; his sons Jim and Brian and their wives Keri and Viktoria; Nancy's sons Christopher and Erik and their wives Yvonne and Andrea; and six grandchildren on whom he doted: Ryland and Kaj, Zane and Miranda, and Griffin and Maggie.

Keep yourself and those around you safe during New Year's holiday, do not drive impaired

Deaths caused by drunk drivers had decreased during the past three decades due to increased awareness, education and more choices of sober drivers, but authorities are seeing a rise in 2016. Over 10,000 people died in 2015 after someone chose to drink and drive.

New Year's Day is the single deadliest day for drunk driving and accidents caused by drunk drivers. The 12-hour window between 6 p.m. on Dec. 31 and 6 a.m. on Jan. 1 tends to have about 71 percent more crashes where alcohol or drugs are listed as a contributing factor.

New California laws in 2017: Human trafficking, car seats, cell phones and more

Denim is now the state’s official fabric to recognize its role in California history, and every autographed collectible sold in California must come with a certificate that verifies it's not a forgery. Those are just two of 898 new laws facing Californians in 2017.

South Lake Tahoe ranks first in most expensive place in California to spend New Year's Eve

South Lake Tahoe is on top of a list that perhaps isn't the best list to be on as the area it is now the most expensive destination in California to spend New Year's Eve 2016.

The region is a very popular one with skiing, concerts, and bars and restaurants where can ring in the new year from.

According to a recent survey by LosAngelesHotels.org, the average overnight stay in SLT is $345 for the most affordable room. They took the rate for the cheapest available double room at a 3-star hotel (or above) at 20 popular destinations for the holiday in the state.

Wet weekend on tap for Lake Tahoe, flash flood warnings up

The weekend will be more of an umbrella one than a snow boot one as a strong atmospheric river heads to Lake Tahoe. The National Weather Service to issue wind and flood warnings for the South Lake Tahoe area because of the deep moisture levels associated with this river that extends past Hawaii.

Wind advisory up until 4:00 a.m. Saturday, and Lake Wind Advisory from 10:00 a.m. Saturday to 10:00 p.m. Sunday. Strong and gusty winds with waves 2-4'. Winds will be 25-35 mph with gusts up to 50 mph.

No One Fights Alone fundraiser for local woman battling cancer

South Shore resident Rosie Parker is fighting esophageal cancer, and a Lake Tahoe benefit concert is being held to help her and her family with growing expenses on Friday, October 21 from 9:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. at Cold Water Brewery.

“We are showing our love, we are showing our support for Rose,” said Cold Water owner Debbie Brown, “Our brewmaster’s wife was diagnosed with esophageal cancer back in August, and she is fighting the fight of her life.”

WordWave returns to South Lake Tahoe: Workshops, plays and Steampunk all rolled into one weekend

She socialized with Hollywood’s most famous stars and married a swashbuckling film hero, Douglas Fairbanks. In 1955, Mary Pickford published her autobiography, Sunshine and Shadows. In this presentation, Pickford will discuss her book and her life.

Revive Coffee & Wine is a new South Lake Tahoe business inside the old Pichetti Winery at 3135 Harrison Avenue, sharing the space with South Tahoe Standup Paddle.

Chautauqua performers Dana Blane, Larry Lippmann and Mike Trute will portray local historical figures Donner Party survivor “Patty Reed”, Stagecoach driver “Hank Monk” and U.S. Marshall “Warren Wasson” at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Wednesday, July 6, at 6:30 pm.

Patty Reed was 8 years old when her family joined the movement west to settle in California. As survivors of the ill-fated 1846 Donner Party, the tremendous hardships they endured left the family destitute. The little doll Patty hid in her clothing survives until this day.

Coachman Hotel holds grand opening this weekend

Nothing is normal about the new Coachman Hotel in South Lake Tahoe, and that suites management just fine.

Gone is the stuffy front desk. Gone are plastic outdoor furniture and generic beds. What takes their place are locally made wooden furniture, fire pits, a bar that doubles as the check-in counter, and books, games and s'mores to make guests feel like they're just hanging out in someone's home.

Tahoe Tidbits: Cork & More changing hands, Postmarc Hotel to expand

The popular and long-time South Lake Tahoe business, the Cork & More, has sold. After almost 40 years of supplying wine, cheese, gifts and deli options to an adoring public, owners Jim and Kim Warlow have decided to retire. They were originally planning to close last Fall, but when potential buyers started to look into purchasing the store on Al Tahoe Blvd., the Warlows decided to hold off closure.

Escrow is expected to close around July 1 Jim said. After that, he's looking forward to enjoying Lake Tahoe's year round recreation from the slopes to the bike trails.

With only an interruption during World War II, the El Dorado County Fair has been going strong since 1859. The 2016 fair will be held June 16-19, 2016 at the fairgrounds in Placerville.

South Lake Tahoe City Councilmember Tom Davis, a long time board member of the fair, is this year's Board President.

What to do in South Lake Tahoe this Memorial Day weekend

The weather is starting to clear and temperatures are warming up, just in time for the Memorial Day weekend. Don't forget, when you are coming or going from the Lake Tahoe Basin, check out the Caltrans message board at http://quickmap.dot.ca.gov/. Click on "Options" and "message boards." This handy tool shows you the exact time it takes to get from town over the mountain so you can stay longer and avoid the traffic!

The Beach Retreat and Lodge will be the spot this weekend for the inaugural "Taste of Tahoe." The two-day event, May 20-21, will include an art show, wine tasting and food pairing.

On Friday, May 20, the event is kicked off with the Art Show and Wine Tasting event in the hotel's new conference center and it will wrap up with a Pairings Dinner on Saturday created by their chef, Garrett Florea, and Crystal Basin Winery.
