Unity at the Lake welcomes Donna Apidone as speaker

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Unity at the Lake is welcoming Donna Apidone as their guest presenter on Sunday, August 4 at 10 a.m. Donna is a former "Morning Edition" and “CapRadio Reads” host on NPR, and since leaving the radio network, she has been teaching and writing.

Donna teaches TransForMission, a course all about finding Purpose in life, at Sacramento State University and congregations throughout the region. The course is based on her book, also titled TransForMission.

Letter: We are NO on the Vacancy Tax

We formed our coalition, Keep Community First, to address a series of anti-business, anti-community tax increase proposals being discussed by the South Lake Tahoe City Council, propelled in large part by one Council member - Scott Robbins.

To date, we have successfully turned aside two of those proposals - a two percent increase in the City’s Transient Occupancy Tax (TOT) and a $23 minimum wage standard. We are now focused and firmly opposed to Measure N on the City’s November ballot which would tax the owners of homes within the City if they are “vacant” more than 183 days a year.

43rd annual Tour of the California Alps Death Ride this weekend

ALPINE COUNTY, Calif. - The 43rd annual Tour of the California Alps Death Ride returns for 2024 in Alpine County on Saturday, July 13. The 103-mile ride starts and finishes at Turtle Rock Park in Markleeville and covers both sides of three mountain passes - Monitor, Ebbett's, and the Pacific Grade.

There will be road closures on Saturday to be aware of: SR-4 (Ebbett's Pass) will be closed from 5 a.m. to 4 p.m., and SR-89 (Alpine State Hwy) will be closed from 5 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Riders will begin at 5 a.m. and cover 14,000 feet of climbing during the day.

El Dorado County is one of seven counties on Fire Risk Reduction List

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - El Dorado County has been named one of seven counties to receive placement on the California Board of Forestry and Fire Protection’s Fire Risk Reduction List. This recognition highlights local agencies throughout the state that meet the best practices for local fire planning.

Placer County and the Town of Truckee also made the list.

On June 19, the Board of Forestry adopted a resolution to approve the 2024 Fire Risk Reduction Community List, which became effective July 1. A copy of this resolution and the 2024 iteration of the list can be found here.

Barton Health offers annual Camp Sunrise, a weekend grief camp for area children

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Local children are invited to participate in the annual Camp Sunrise, a children’s bereavement camp serving children ages 7 to 14, who have experienced the death of a loved one or other significant loss. The overnight grief camp takes place Thursday to Saturday, August 8 to 10, at Galilee Camp and Retreat Center in Glenbrook, Nevada.

More algae testing around Lake Tahoe after social media post goes viral about death of dog

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - Scientists test the beautiful blue water of Lake Tahoe often, and shoreline testing is routinely done in search of possible harmful algal blooms, or HABs.

A social media post was made on TikTok and shared on many other platforms about a dog dying after being in the water at El Dorado Beach or Nevada Beach. The dog owner stated her veterinarian said it was due to HABs.

Royal Fire burning 12 miles southwest of Truckee now 168 acres, missing hiking group found

UPDATE 5 p.m. Monday: Air Attack is reporting the Royal Fire at 154 acres due to more accurate mapping. There has been no change in containment but the fire continued to hold within its footprint throughout the day. Tankers have boxed the fire in with retardant. Three Type 1 helicopters have been performing water drops throughout the day.

Heat Advisory ending early in South Lake Tahoe after two days of record breaking temps

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - First the good news, the Heat Advisory originally in place for South Lake Tahoe until Friday night is expiring tonight. While daytime highs will still be in the 90s, the HeatRisk levels will mainly be minor to moderate due to cool overnight lows, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.

July 6 - South Lake Tahoe observed a high of 91°F this afternoon, breaking the old record of 90°F set in 2014.

July 7 - South Lake Tahoe observed a high of 92°F, easily surpassing the previous record of 88°F set in 2014, 2021.

Royal Fire burning west of Lake Tahoe in the Royal Gorge area

TAHOE NATIONAL FOREST, Calif. - The Royal Fire is a new fire reported Sunday afternoon in the Tahoe National Forest and is currently growing at a moderate to rapid rate. Named the Royal Fire since it is in the Royal Gorge area, west of Lake Tahoe.

Cal Fire - NEU reports the fire has burned 54 acres so far and air resources have been working the fire as ground crews make their way to the scene.

South Lake Tahoe Police kept busy over the 4th of July holiday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It was a very busy 4th of July holiday for the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD). Not only did they respond to 196 calls in 24 hours, they also responded to two collisions, one with serious injuries.

On July 3 at 11:30 p.m., an electric moped and a pedestrian were involved in a collision at Fairway Avenue and Lake Tahoe Blvd. The pedestrian sustained major life-threatening injuries and was flown to Renown Hospital in Reno. SLTPD Lt. Scott Crivelli said that person is now in stable condition. This incident is under investigation.

Lahontan National Fish Hatchery stocks 12,144 catchable Pilot Peak cutthroat trout into Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Over the past month, the Lahontan National Fish Hatchery has stocked 12,144 catchable Pilot Peak strain Lahontan cutthroat trout into Lake Tahoe at El Dorado Beach, Zephyr Cove Marina, and Kings Beach State Park.

Stocking and updates will continue bi-weekly throughout the summer at various publicly accessible locations in both California and Nevada.

Major delays expected as crews continue SR28 project in North Lake Tahoe

PLACER COUNTY – Caltrans is advising motorists of a broadband installation project set to begin on Monday, July 8 along State Route 28 (SR-28) along the north shore of Lake Tahoe.

This project is part of a larger statewide effort by the California Department of Technology to bring high-speed broadband into rural communities. The contractor for this project is Teichert Construction.

Survey work will be occurring along the eastbound shoulder of SR-28 at the following locations:

Pay Fire burning east of Placerville off of US50

UPDATE 8 a.m. Monday: Evacuation Warnings have been lifted on areas except for some parts of Texas Hill Rd and Pay Dirt Rd. The Placerville Airport remains under an Evacuation Order. Please use caution in the area as Emergency Personnel and equipment are operating in the area. Evacuation Shelter is now closed. The fire remains at 77 acres and 25 percent containment.

Countdown to American Century Championship - Saturday tickets sold out

LAKE TAHOE, Nev./Calif. - Now that the fireworks have ended, the beaches cleaned up, and the 4th of July vacationers are wrapping up their Lake Tahoe trips, the next big event is upon us. The 35th annual American Century Championship (ACC) will be at Edgewood Tahoe practice rounds to start the week, and for the public, Pro-Am tournaments on Wednesday and Thursday before the championship runfs from Friday, July 12 to Sunday, July 14.

Week-long Heat Advisory issued for Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has issued a Heat Advisory for the Lake Tahoe Basin that will be in effect until 10 a.m. Friday, July 12.

While Lake Tahoe Basin will not be into the 100s like Western Nevada and much of California, officials are warning that the high elevation combined with low humidity and high temperatures have created the advisory. There is a prolonged period of Moderate to Major Heat Risk and heat health impacts for those sensitive to heat or those without access to effective cooling.

Trash left on Lake Tahoe beaches significantly less this 4th of July; Volunteer forces break records

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - After the large amount of trash left behind by the 4th of July revelers on Zephyr Shoals in 2023, all eyes were on the post-holiday beach cleanups around Lake Tahoe on July 5.

At seven beach cleanup sites coordinated by the League to Save Lake Tahoe (Keep Tahoe Blue), the total trash removed weighed in at 1,866 pounds. At Zephyr Shoals last year alone, the trash left behind on the scenic 3/4-mile beach totaled over 8,000 pounds.

Parade and 129th Rescue Wing show start the 4th of July holiday in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - After an air show at the Lake Tahoe Airport got things rolling on July 3, the Fourth of July got started with a parade and a water rescue demonstration over El Dorado Beach by the California Air National Guard's129th Rescue Wing.

49th annual Commencement at Lake Tahoe Community College see record number of graduates

Bobby Jaeger, the superintendent, led the effort to maintain sanctuary status on this course. Lake Tahoe Golf Course was designated as a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary in 2003 and is one of over 900 courses in the world to hold certification from Audubon International.

Tahoe Arts Project sets date for annual Music on the Beach

Quick knockdown of house fire in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A fire in the garage of a South Lake Tahoe home was quickly knocked down by responding agencies, containing the flames before they spread.

At 5:48 p.m. on Monday, July 1, a fire was reported in the 1100 block of Dedi Avenue, and South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) and Lake Valley Fire Protection District (LVFPD) responded and had the fire knocked down by 6:12 p.m.

The fire was contained to the garage of a single-story home. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

There were no injuries reported.

Taylor Creek Visitor Center Stream Profile Chamber reopens after vandals destroyed the glass

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Repairs have been completed and the Stream Profile Chamber at the Taylor Creek Visitor Center has reopened according to the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU). Vandals destroyed the glass two years ago, and it has taken until now to get ready for the public.

The Profile Chamber closed in 2018 for damage to a smaller panel in the chamber that happened during cleaning, and it reopened in 2019, and was closed during COVID and 2022 due to a low water year. It was closed again due to the vandals, but now the public can enjoy it again.

Man arrested and facing multiple charges after harassing people at South Lake Tahoe beach

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Troy Leonard Oharran, 59, was arrested by officers from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) on Friday after allegedly causing a disturbance, harassing people, making inappropriate comments to teen girls, and threatening officers at Conolley Beach behind the Tahoe Beach Retreat.

Preparation and information key to handling emergencies in South Lake Tahoe and El Dorado County

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A fire near Cool, California over the weekend highlighted the need for the residents of El Dorado County to do three things this fire season: Sign up for RAVE, know how to access "Perimeter," and be prepared with a "Go Bag." The fire started near homes in a canyon and the residents were immediately guided on who has to leave immediately.

South Christmas Valley Firewise organizational meet and greet set
