Daughters of the American Revolution membership surpasses one million

This month, membership in the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution has surpassed one million total members since its beginning. Member number one million is Amy Dickinson from Freetown, New York. Amy is the author of the popular advice column, “Ask Amy.” Her journalism career began as a freelancing position with the Chicago Tribune. Her personal life has involved many challenges, including her father’s abandonment of the family when she was a child. She cites her mother’s experience - becoming a typist at Cornell University to support her children and eventually becoming a professor at that same university - as a “perfect example of how women can lift each other up.”

DAR is a nonprofit, nonpolitical women’s service organization that currently has more than 190,000 members in approximately 3,000 chapters worldwide. Any woman 18 years or older, regardless of race, religion, or ethnic background, who can prove her lineal descent from a Revolutionary War Patriot, is eligible for membership. Each DAR member has a unique story, but all share a passion for historic preservation, education, patriotism and a dedication to local community service. The Lake Tahoe Chapter, based in South Lake Tahoe, is one of the newest in the National Society, organizing on February 5, 2019. Prior to this time, there was no DAR presence in the greater Lake Tahoe Basin. Chapter projects include restoration and preservation of the Al Tahoe Historic Cemetery, honoring an outstanding high school senior with the DAR Good Citizen award, distribution of the DAR Citizenship Manual, celebrating new United States citizens, support for homeless students and veterans at Lake Tahoe Community College, and presentation of the Wreaths Across America Ceremony at Happy Homestead Cemetary, December 14, 2019.

Lake Tahoe Chapter encourages women who are interested in DAR membership to contact Chapter Vice Regent Rosemary Manning at rosemarymanning@gmail.com. Assistance with the application process is provided.
