Daughters of the American Revolution membership surpasses one million

This month, membership in the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution has surpassed one million total members since its beginning. Member number one million is Amy Dickinson from Freetown, New York. Amy is the author of the popular advice column, “Ask Amy.” Her journalism career began as a freelancing position with the Chicago Tribune. Her personal life has involved many challenges, including her father’s abandonment of the family when she was a child.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. This weekend marks the 35th annual Gatsby Festival and Tea at the Tallac Historic Site from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. August 10-11.
Celebrate life at Lake Tahoe in the 1920s. This free event includes exhibits, Vintage Market, food vendors, live jazz, antique vehicles, children's and family games, activities and more. 1920’s attire is encouraged but not required.
Enjoy a celebration of the Rip-Roaring ’20s with a variety of events including guided tours, vintage automobiles, historical talks, silent auction, family games and activities, food and drink.
Lake Tahoe Chapter of DAR celebrates its organization

Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) members from all over California came together on Sunday, May 5, 2019 at the Lake Tahoe Golf Course to celebrate the new DAR Chapter in South Lake Tahoe.
The chapter was officially organized by the National Society on February 5 of this year, and was welcomed to the city with a proclamation at the South Lake Tahoe City Council's April 16 meeting, Sunday's event was the formal recognition of the chapter's status as the newest in California. City Council member Tamara Wallace attended the event and read the proclamation to the attendees.

Lake Tahoe Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR), is now officially chartered in South Lake Tahoe. The Daughters of the American Revolution is a 501(c)(3), non-profit, non-political, women’s service organization.
It focuses its community and national service in the areas of:
- Historic Preservation - Al Tahoe Historic Cemetery, preservation of family histories
- Education - literacy, path to U.S. Citizenship (Naturalization), American History education and essay contest, genealogy workshops
DAR surveys pioneer cemetery in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) have been working in the historic pioneer cemetery in Al Tahoe, surveying original boundaries and unmarked grave sites dating back to the late 1800s.
Long before there was a South Lake Tahoe, the town of Rowlands rested on the southern shore of Lake Tahoe in the area of the current Bellevue and Lakeview Avenues.
Thomas Rowland built the cemetery for the small community several hundred feet away from the town that bore his name.

Daughters of the American Revolution comes to South Lake Tahoe

A chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) is organizing in South Lake Tahoe. DAR is a non-profit, non-political women's charitable service organization that focuses its community service on historic preservation, education and patriotic endeavor. DAR membership is open to any woman age 18 and over, regardless of race, religion or creed, who can document her lineal, bloodline descent from someone who aided in our independence from Great Britain. Assistance with application preparation is provided at no charge.

The Valhalla Art, Music and Theatre Festival is Lake Tahoe’s premier summer long festival of world class live music, theatre, visual and cultural arts, bring a wide range of activities to the historic estate.

Support Valhalla's efforts to bring unique, world class arts programming and historic preservation to the community while creating your own work of art, Starry, Starry Night, at their Paint & Sip fundraiser on Monday, April 18, 2016.
No art experience is necessary and a professional artist will be there to guide you step-by-step instructions. All supplies will be provided.
The cost is $40 per person, with $20 of that going to support Valhalla.
Tallac Historic Site retrofit approved; work could begin in 2015

A decision to approve the retrofit project to revitalize the Tallac Historic Site was announced today by the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU).
The project, in the works for a few years, will improve recreational facilities, implement water quality BMPs, as well as upgrade paths, restrooms, parking and picnic areas.

Hijinks on the Comstock with a twist comes to Carson City this summer with "Where is the Gold?" a Wild West melodrama and murder mystery dinner set aboard a vintage Virginia and Truckee Railroad steam engine train, July 18 and August 15.
"Where is the Gold?" produced by the Brewery Arts Center will entertain with plenty of Comstock legend and lore intertwined with spellbinding whodunit mystery. The audience will be invited to help the cast of characters solve the mystery of who stole the gold, and who is responsible for the death of Mr. Big.

UNR archeologist leads Virginia City hospital excavation team

The University of Nevada, Reno, in cooperation with the Nevada State Historic Preservation Office, has sent a team of archaeologists to excavate the site of one of Nevada’s most important early hospitals. St. Mary Louise Hospital in Virginia City opened in 1876 and served the mining community until the early 20th century.
