Mild New Year's Eve for South Lake Tahoe/Douglas County Law Enforcement

Between South Lake Tahoe and Stateline, New Year's Eve celebrations were fairly mild and had nothing out of the norm occurred.

Perhaps it was the cold temperatures or several activities spread out, but crowds on the street weren't as massive as known in the past.

According to South Lake Tahoe Police Lt. Brian Williams, police activity for the department was what one would expect on a holiday. On New Year's Eve the made 17 arrests, the majority of which were for either drunk and disorderly conduct in public or driving under the influence (DUI). Some arrests also involved incidents of domestic violence and drug possession.

The same went for Douglas County as they arrested eight people at Stateline for battery, domestic battery, disorderly conduct, a minor consuming alcohol and possession of a dangerous drug. Three more were arrested for traffic related offenses and DUI.

Douglas County Sheriff's Office reported the celebratory crowd appeared small. Hwy 50 was closed through the casino corridor at 11:50 p.m. and opened by 12:22 a.m.

There were some other arrests at SnowGlobe that aren't in the numbers above. California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) cited several individuals there for misdemeanor violations.

Arrests over the New Year's holiday have been fairly consistent since 2007 with 14-17 arrests of revelers on average (though last year saw just 7). In the early 2000s SLTPD has over 30 arrests a year.

Many law enforcement agencies are involved in keeping the holiday safe in our area: Nevada Highway Patrol, Douglas County Sheriff Search and Rescue, Tahoe-Douglas Fire Department, South Lake Tahoe Police Department, El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office, California Highway Patrol, ABC, FBI, Douglas County Communications Center, Nevada Department of Transportation and Cal-Trans.
