SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - South Lake Tahoe and other communities around the lake will join the nation on Tuesday, January 19 as they honor those who have died during the pandemic.

South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue and Lake Valley Fire Honor Guard will take part in the nationwide bell-ringing ceremony at 2:30 p.m. There will not be a public ceremony but all are encouraged to ring bells or turn their outdoor lights on to participate in the memorial as well.

“This will be a solemn event, but it is important to remember all those who have lost their lives to this virus,” said SLT Fire Chief Clive Savacool, “We are proud to stand with people from around the basin and around the country to recognize this national tragedy.”

The National Moment of Unity and Remembrance comes on the eve of the inauguration and is meant to be a time to reflect on what has been one of the more challenging periods in the nation’s history, and to renew the commitment to coming together to end the pandemic and rebuild our nation.

The coast-to-coast bell ringing memorial will honor the Americans we have lost to COVID-19. The Presidential Inauguration Committee is inviting cities and towns around the country to join Washington, D.C., in illuminating buildings and ringing church bells in a national moment of unity and remembrance.

Almost 400,000 people have died from coronavirus in the United States since 2020. The death toll has tops two million across the globe.
